Typhoon Nina!

Philippines
September 22, 2008 7:25am CST
When I woke up this morning, I was hoping that classes will be suspended. It was raining so hard and the wind blew so hard that it sounded like someone whistling. I texted one of the school administrators (in fact, a member of the family that owns the university where I am working) who is a very close friend of mine. I asked him if classes in all levels will be suspended. Well, he told me that only the classes in the elementary level (at least in our school) was suspended. I had no choice but to go to work as I am scheduled to attend a research presentation after lunch. Towards, lunchtime, the weather became worse. At around 1230, I was already in the other university where the research presentation will take place. I was really wet! I had an umbrella but it seemed useless considering the strong downpour! It would have been useless to even have brought my car as I would still walk several meters from the car to the hall. The research presentation was over at around 5pm. My co-teacher and I were worried how we would walk ourselves back to our school as the strong winds would surely destroy our umbrellas and we would surely get wet. We waited for about 30 minutes hoping that the rain would stop. When it did not stop even after 30 minutes, we decided to just go anyway. We have not gone that far yet but we were already soaking wet. We were able to reach our school after 5 minutes. I did not bother going back to the office as I was really wet and all I wanted to do was to change into dry clothes. Good thing my boyfriend brought with him some dry clothes that I could borrow. My sister who is in high school waited for me too as she had a difficult time waiting for a ride home because of the weather. When I got home, my mom was really angry when she saw us. We were both soaking wet! She was not angry with us, she was angry because she thought that if classes were suspended earlier today, we wouldn't have experienced all these. I just wanted to share with you guys what happened to me today...

HI Dolce vita, I hope that you are enjoying a hot cup of tea near a fireplace and browsing the net under a blanket. On the contrary it was hot and sunny in Malta. It was my first day of work after the summer holidays. All students were prim and proper with their neat uniform smily faces. Hmm I don't bet it will last for long as right now they are in the testing stage. I hope that you the weather will be a bit better tomorrow and I hope that you don't get soaked wet again.

Hi! I do hope that the weather tomorrow would be a bit better too. We only have few days before the finals and there are several topics yet to be discussed. How's your first day of work after the summer holidays?

hi, dolce, what a day you've been through. it's the best and most comfortable to stay home in such horrible weather, drinking hot coffee, watching soap play. hope it will clear up soon.

hi dolce_vita! that always happens here. the PAGASA is always late in declaring announcements. at times that its raining cats and dogs, we would eagerly wait for a half-day announcement. we'd call our central office and they'll say they are still waiting for announcement from our head agency. the central office would call the head agency and the head agency would say they are still waiting for announcement somewhere. and then we would receive the announcement declaring a half-day at 3pm or later. .

i noticed that everytime their is a typhoon, Luzon is always affected. here in cebu, we just have a few drizzle and clouded skies. it was a little windy too, but nothing much, thank God, we didn't have floods here because of that typhoon. i am just glad that we are not very much affected. hope you didnt get sick. you were soaked and wet with the rain..

Hey dolce, Wow sorry to hear you had such a miserable day! That really sounds terrible. Why didn't they cancel the classes? It sounds like it surely was bad enough to cancel. I guess it's like it is everywhere, it's all about the almighty dollars! In the USA they don't like to cancel classes unless it's really bad out. It has to be a bad snowstorm or hurricane or worse. They only cancel classes for the younger kids not the older kids. I didn't even know that they were that far down the alphabet already! Nina! Wow, they're really moving along quickly. I hope by now things have settled down and you are resting from your miserable day and are all nice and dry and warm. Enjoy the rest of the day if you can and hopefully the sun will shine tomorrow or at least it will stop raining!

It's really sad that you all had to go through that today. In these conditions they should suspend all activities and classes until further notice. They are endangering people when making then come in to work or school in that type of weather. Well that is my opinion and if you were my child, I'd have been really upset over the situation. I would not have wanted any of my family out in that weather.

Typhoons are no simple matter. One could get stranded outside or power could be cut off and there is no way to find your way out of the storm. Even when I am home I still fear the wind howling and wonder if it will blow my roof away.

Hi, the thypoon really is strong, I woke up to the sound of strong winds blowing forth. In my school we really have no classes on mondays but on other universities my friends still went to school. At around lunch time the weather got worse, the wind was blowing so hard, the rain drops were getting bigger. But I knew that my friends still had their classes going on, what a bad day for them, even though it was announced that here in Benguet, it is only signal number 1 but what winds, it was so cold and the roads were flooded. Basically no person would want to go out in this weather. I think in the other universities classes were suspended, thankfully. It was such a strong storm. Good thing I was only at my house, sitting all day in the computer because of having nothing else to do. What was bad was the signal in my phone was weak so I can't text that much. And when I went out to buy food, I was so wet I had to change clothes when I reached my house. And in the afternoon, I got wet again just to find out that the stores have already close due to the strength of the storm. I do hope tomorrow we will have no classes still! But they said that we are only on signal number 1 so only elementary would have no classes. How dare they, it's raining so hard here!!

You are right. It's just Signal Number 1 and so only the classes in the elementary level were suspended. Around 9am I learned that some high school principals already sent their students home. I hope that school administrators and government officials become more sensitive and concerned about the welfare of the students.

hello dolce_vita, i knew how you felt. I would feel the same too. The weather however in Alabang today is so far okay. In the morning, it was pretty hot up to 1:00 PM then at around 3:00PM started pouring in that I had to turn off the aircon to enjoy the rain.

Well in my country Indonesia..we seldom get Typhoons...mostly storms...but not as severe as typhoons. Like the katrina typhoon I guess. So its very dangerous to wander on the streets during thypoons..you might get blown away...What a frightening experience for you...

That's bad the weather has been like that in your place. Well here in Manila we only experience drizzles but never like that. If that happened in here for sure there will be lots of stranded vehicles somewhere else. and worse flooding will be happening in some areas. I just noticed that there are strong winds that prevails over the place but that is it rains are not that strong in here.

I really think that you local government could have declared it a holiday for the HS students. It is the local government's responsibility to do that if the weather is not that strong.

It actually caused a lot of trouble for a lot of people especially high school students who had a hard time waiting for a ride home. I pity them.
