When a post is lacking in grammar, spelling, & punctuation, does it annoy you?

I am not an English or writing teacher - in fact, those classes were my least favorite in school. However, when a post is written with no regard to spelling, grammar, or punctuation. I find myself reading it about 3 times.
I admit, this is not just with My Lot but with anything - articles, magazines, posters, etc... I actually get annoyed at myself for getting annoyed with this "problem".
Just so my fellow MyLotters are aware, I never rate a post based on spelling, punctuation, and grammar. As I said before, I am not an English teacher and definitely do not intend on being one!!
Does anyone else get annoyed at the lack of grammar and proper spelling? Do you find yourself re-reading posts so as to comprehend it?

Definitely. Sometimes, it gets difficult to understand what someone is trying to say when their grammar, spelling, and punctuation are wrong. Sometimes, I re-read the posts/articles I'm reading around 3-4 times. I'm not perfect. I make mistakes as well. That is exactly the reason why I double check what I write before actually posting it.
One thing that bothers me is there's a spell checker here at myLot but there are still a lot of misspelled words in a lot of the posts.

Thanks for your comments. I learn something everyday - I wasn't aware there was a spell checker on myLot. It is probably in an obvious place but I must ask - where is it?

When you're typing in the text box, there is a red line that appears when you have a misspelled word. These following words have a red line under them when I'm typing:
Mispelllled word.

Umm, I don't get a red line through my "misspeled" word in the text box. I think I will have to check my settings or something - any idea?

I have found myself going over some posts on mylot with bad spelling, and broken English. I have to read it about 4 times until I figure out what the person is trying to say. I know that for some on Mylot, English is not their first language and I totally understand. In my opinion, Mylot is meant for everyone to come and share their opinion therefore no one is being judged for their presentation of a discussion. As long as I understand what you write, I will respond.

I second your opinion. Even though I believe myLot is not the place to be critiquing one's writing skills, I just think that more care should be put into one's comments/responses.
A discussion goes both ways - not only should the reader read carefully but the writer should put more care into conveying their thoughts.
Thanks for your response. :)

It used to bother me, but not so much any more, especially here on myLot. Many people here speak other languages, with English as their second (or third!) language, so we have to expect mistakes.
It does seem, though, that people are a lot more slack about writing properly on the internet.

I hope the same thing happens to me. I know - how do people keep track of multiple languages? I definitely couldn't! Thanks for your response.

No I don't because from time to time my grammar, spelling and punctuation is well lets say bad. Will say at least you know what I am saying when you read it because it isn't as bad as some. If I have to read a post more than two times to understand I won't respond to it. I sign out and go to another discussion. But here there are some that do have a problem and I try to work with it especially if they are learning english.

Agree, I don't have to read your comment multiple times. Thanks for responding.

Not really, unless I dont comprehend after reading a few times. I've noticed that many people are from other countries and they probably have broken english. Im not intending to offend anyone. Also maybe some people just dont realize it or dont re-read their post thouroughly. I know I make mistakes and dont use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Yes, and I am an English Scholar, but I will admit, I also tend to make some mistakes here, and there, when it comes to my spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Honestly, everyone on here, myself included, could use help with basic English Skills. I have to read post at least two to three times to understand what is being said in those post.

Thanks for your input. We all make mistakes - human nature. A couple mistakes here and there don't really bother me. My thought is that if one has to read a post 2, 3 times then I think that reflects on the writer's English skills.

This does not bother me in the least as I have seen resonding to someone and realizing I made a bunch of typos . I can spell and it was my best subject in school but when I am typing I get in a rush to say what I have to say before I lose my train of thought and end up making errors that I don't actaully realize until I hit the sumit button and then it is too late .
There are also many on here that I have noticed that English is there second language and I think it is great that they are trying to imporve there English just by being on here . I myself only know one language so those that are here with English being a second language to me is impresive . English is one of the hardest languages to learn , or so I have heard . So I give credit for all those who are trying to speak our language and don't actually pay much attention to the spelling , grammar or punctuation . If I am unable to understand what is being said I just move on to anohter discusion or answer what I think they are asking :)

No, I'm not annoyed with that grammar and spelling because I know that this site is composed of people from different parts of the world and that includes a non English speaking countries. I mean they can speak English but just as second language and they are not using it everyday. As long as I understand what it means. It doesn't bother me because I am not good in English as well. I'm here for fun and for little earning while enjoying so not a big deal to me.

That's great - I wish I wasn't annoyed. In all honesty, I think it makes me miss out on some great discussions because I am less likely to join conversations where the topic is misspelt, etc...
I totally give credit to all the international people who speak English as their second language. I hope I did not offend anyone by this discussion because it was aimed at native English speakers.
Continue having fun and thanks for your comment.

When I read a discussion and there are lot of mistakes in spellings and grammatical it takes more time to get clear meanings of the discussion and one has to read it again and if the things are not clear to understand it really annoy.

It used to quite a bit! But, now that my own fingers act their age and
have touches of arthritis, I often goof up and fail to proof read my own posts.
It's all good! As readers we should be able to catch the gist of what someone
is saying and not have to bring attention to their errors.
lol - I've talked on too many chat forums to really worry about this!

Uh, I might not be far behind you in the arthritis! myLot is my first experience with Internet discussions so I think this probably is a factor. I am not used to some of the lingo and hardly know any "text" speak. I do know what lol is though!
Lol to you too and thanks for dropping by.

Spelling errors are going to occur. It could just be an accidental slip on the keyboard. Also, some of the most intelligent people in the world are poor spellers. Many of the people who post here are also not those who speak English as a first language, and they need to be cut some slack.
But what does bother me are sentences without any punctuation whatsoever. They are often typed in all lower case letters too. Aggrevating! Yes, I need to read those very thoroughly.

Hey, thanks for replying. I am actually glad you brought up the point of many myLotters not having English as their first language. I realized I should have said something about that as soon as I hit the "Post" button. In no way is this directed at people that do not have English as their first language. I realize their are many myLotters from outside the United States and I think it is great that they are using this site. It makes this site a greating learning tool for all peoples.

I think everyone's in a hurry these days and just don't realize, or perhaps care, about the errors. It annoys me to read and then have reread a discussion trying to figure out what someone's tying to say because everythings running together. I guess we shouldn't get too freaked out until people start typing in text lanuage. Then I'll have no idea what's going on.

It depends - I started a similar discussion, with interesting results. You can tell if it is written by someone whose English is their second language or they have learning disabilities, resulting in less fluency, which is acceptable, given the effort made to communicate some thought-provoking points at times - I support these posts in fact. But anyone who has been through 12 years of formal education in English should track down their mistakes made during typing - often they are based on imperfect keyboard technique, which many of us take the effort to go back and correct (like I frequently type "adn" and consequently take the time to correct it to "and"), but others, who want to get the maximum number of posts up or consistently long lengths to get the most money, should reconsider their carelessness.
