What do you think when you see a woman doing a traditionally men's job?

Yesterday I was stopped by a flag person so some trucks could cross the road at a construction site. The first dump truck through had a woman driving. Then a little bobcat went by and you guessed it a woman was at the wheel. I then looked around the construction site and noticed a couple of other women. I wanted to yell out "you go girl" but refrained. I work in a male dominated industry too and always have. I wonder what others think when they notice that I am indeed not a man! How do you feel when you see a woman doing a man's job or a man doing a typically female job?

I would be impressed. A few weeks ago I saw a women bus driver driving one of the public transport buses. She is the only woman bus driver at the moment. She is good in her job as any other man.

I don't really think anything of it. I think about what i think when i see all people hard at work: People working hard to make a living. I don't see a woman on a construction site and make a deal of it, i look at her as i would any other person. I guess you could say i don't draw a line between a womans job and a mans job.

I don't believe there should be any restrictions on who does what. I enjoy lots of things that people usually see men into, for example computer hardware and tools are some things I love messing with. I do not react at all when I see one doing something the other is known for doing. I accept it as becoming the norm. One day there will come a day where all occupations will be more diverse.

According to me, women are pampered by men due to love and affection. therefore, the jobs require more physical power is taken by man.In some cases it is acceptable due to physocal condition of women. However, the time are changing hence it is nothing wrong that women doing the work which men done traditionally.

I personally think its awesome. I think its about time people stopped stereotyping jobs as male or female jobs. A job is a job, and the best qualified person should do it regardless of gender.

I think it is wonderful when people to jobs not traditionally assigned to their gender. It would be nice if gender roles were obliterated alltogether. I am sick and tired of living in a world where people are expected to act a certain way because of their gender. That's just not right!

Hi whywiki, I have no problem whatever with a woman doing what has traditionally been a mans job, or a man doing what people always thought of as a woman's job. I think it's time that everyone got over that sort of thing, it belongs in another century. Blessings.

Hi whywiki! Well, I have to be honest, I dont agree with it for myself. I always have said to each their own but for myself I dont believe that I would be able to do certain jobs that a man is just "cut out for". For example, I've seen lots of cop shows and prison type shows and when the woman is confronted with a situation that a criminal/suspect is out of hand they always need to call a man to help. Or at the construction sites, some of them jobs I believe need the strength of a man as well. I am fortunate enough that my husband earns good money and I can stay home with my baby during the day and I just feel right here. I personally think a woman should still be at home with the child.Unforunatly, for the way the world is today, alot of women that want to cannot because of the cost of everything. To support your family on only one income is very difficult so I do understand why some women have to work. But given the choice,I think it's just better for the woman to be at home. I have traditional beliefs I suppose but it works for me, and to the women that do work and do mens jobs, if it works for them..thats good too!

I think its great. If a woman wants to do a job and physically can then she should. I used to do concrete work and I loved it. It was probably my favorite job and I'll most likely go back to it once I'm able to do so (I'm pregnant right now). It was funny at first, some of the looks I would get from other workers, etc. but after they realized I could do it just as well as they could they didn't even seem to notice. It did keep happening when we would go for lunch though. It never failed that when we walked into a resturaunt dirty, sweaty, and covered in concrete everyone was always doing double takes with me LOL. The same goes for men in "womens" jobs. If it's what they want to do, then they should do it. Life is so short that we should be happy with the things we have to do and try to find a job/career that makes us happy regardless of gender.

I think its great! These woman can make great money doing those types of jobs if they are able. I hate it when people think jobs should be gender specific. Some woman may not have the strength as some men, but if they CAN do the job then they should be allowed to do so.

I don't think there should be a divide between traditional 'mans jobs' and 'womens jobs'. It should be whatever you want to do and are capable of doing.

I think it should be down to who is capable of doing the job too.

It's great to see a woman ably handling a job once thought only for men. I think we are very capable of succeeding in this man's world. I do hope that they are being paid the same wages though. That seems to be one we still need to catch up with. Also, a man doing a woman's work doesn't seem to be as equally impressive. JK!!!

I'd've probably wanted to say "You go girl" too even tho I can't and never have done jobs traditionally male, I am always glad to see it happening.

Hey whywiki! I think that it's great! I have no problem seeing a woman doing a construction job, why not! I would have loved to work in construction! I probably would have been good at it and enjoyed it alot more than being a legal secretary which I hated! I don't think that it's a job that just a man can do. I guess woman have now proved it since there are quite alot of woman in the field as you have proven by what you have said. And as for a man doing a job that is supposedly a females job, the again so what? I don't think that in this day and age there should be any job that is set for any particualar gender. Do you?
