How many hours of sleep do you need?

I know this is probable a topic that has been brought up before, and all the studies suggest that we need atleast 8 hours of sleep a day. Personally, 4 hours is good for me. I can even handle 5 hours, but anything more then that and I am tired, very tired. I feel like I can't wake up. If I sleep 3 hours, I am tired, but can function, anything less and I am just feeling burnt out. I recently had a friend tell me that a study was conducted and they found that sleep is over rated. It makes no difference how many hours we get, we may feel tired but we can function. In this day and age, I don't know how anyone could possible get 8 hours of sleep a night. What's your opinion.

Thank you for responding, I always hear that we need 8 hours, but I just can't imagine getting that much sleep. Now a days most of us are quite busy and finding the time to get things done is hard enough, let alone 8 hours of sleep. My father has Parkinson's and is very use to little sleep, now he must learn how to get atleast 8 hours of sleep. If he gets tired during the day it triggers a speel and he must lay down and rest. It has been very hard for him to learn to sleep that long. Thanks again, Gangus2

sleeping - sleeeeepy
it depends on how tired i am.... i think i usually get around 7-8 hours of sleep a day. i used to only get around 4 hours and that was enough. although i feel so much better now getting those 4 extra hours of sleep. just because you feel like your not tired doesn't mean you aren't. i can see how people can sleep for 8 hours. I LOVE sleeping..... it feels so freaking good to sleep sometimes. i love it when i'm so tired and just pass right out and sleep hard. i end up waking up the next morning feeling so refreshed.

I am so jealous of people who can function on 4 or 5 hours of sleep! I would be able to get so much done if I could stay up past 10pm. In fact, my New Years Resolution this year was to see if I could get less sleep. So far, it's not been working (along with other Resolutions....another story for another time). I have to have at least 8 hours of sleep to wake up the next day refreshed. I sure do wish otherwise, though.

Its hard for me to get 8 hours of sleep now. There's always things to do. If i can get at least 7 hours sleep, I consider myself lucky!HAHA. But then if I don't get enough sleep, I feel tired, sleepy through work. When I am both sleepy and tired, I tend to be clumsy.

Unlike some people, I don't need just 5 hours of sleep- I can work on only 2. Because I get very busy during the day and night, I get very little sleep. I am used to it, though. I've been getting less than 8 hours of sleep since I graduated high school in 2003. I do understand that for some it's not healthy, but sometimes you just can't change it.

Thanks for your response, and AMAZING. I don't think I could run on just 2 hours of sleep a night. I am sure I would pass out at some point. When I get less then 4 or 5, I feel very tired and can't wait to go to bed. I still only seem to be able to sleep 4 hours though. Thanks again, Gangus2

i know i don't get 8 hours of sleep a night! i probably could, if i put the kids to bed a bit earlier and went to sleep almost right after they did. but then there would be no time for my husband and i. also, i work 4 nights out of the week and don't usually get home on those nights until around 11. by the time i get home i am usually so wound up from work still that i cannot go right to bed. i end up staying up for a while on the computer or reading or watching tv. but that is also the only time of day that i really have to myself, since my husband doesn't stay up too late with me. usually i can function fine. it may take awhile to get myself up and going, but i am usually fine with about 5 hours of sleep. would i like to get more? sure... who wouldn't? lol but with 2 kids and more to come someday, i have resigned myself to the fact that i will not be getting a decent night's sleep until they are moved out of the house! :)

Thank you for responding, and yes, it is very hard to get sleep when you are working, and raising a family. With all of that to do how on earth is a person going to find 8 hours of sleep every day. Thanks again, Gangus2

People tell me I need eight hours of sleep, but I've never slept eight hours in my life. Well, maybe twice. I have spasms that wake me up in the middle of the night so I usually average about three to four hours at once. Then, I go back to sleep for another two or three. This is my average and I seem to be doing pretty okay.

Hi! From what I know, 8 hours of sleep is needed by younger kids and adolescents. Of course, babies sleep much more (like almost the whole day) because that's what they need. As we get older, the hours of sleep that we require every night lessens. During old age, we actually sleep the least. If you would notice, grandparents often wake up very early (sometimes at the wee hours) in the morning. The amount of sleep we need is based on need. Some people sleep less during the weekdays and sleep more during the weekends to keep up with the hours' loss of sleep. I am 41 and very busy at my job as a teacher, and 4 hours of sleep is the best for me.

I do not think that the sleep of eight hours is required by all the people. I am of the opinion that it depends on an individual's nature as to how much sleep is required by him or her. I have an experience of being quite okay with a sleep of just 5 hours constantly for more than ten days. However, I feel that the nature of work you are engaged in plays important part in deciding how much sleep is required by you. I had this cut out sleep during the time I was overloaded with some table work. The work did not require lot of mental stress and so I had to just keep doing the similar type of job for so many hours. At the same time I also had some free time to get myself refreshed. So I could do with this much sleep. Another very important thing about sleep for me is that the nature of sleep. If I have sound sleep for about five to six hours, I think that it is enough for me.

I really value my sleep well but sadly, I can't get my desired hours of sleep which is 8 hours or more. I have shifting skeds at work and usually I only get 4 or 5 hours of sleep. I can still function though but I can still feel that I need to recharge more. 8 hours of sleep is what I really want to have. Every time I sleep, I always yearn for that 8 hours but at times, I easily get distracted leaving me only shorter hours of sleeping time.

gangus2 - hi. I can go three or four days on as little as 4 hours sleep. I can stay awake for 48 hours if I have to. I like sleeping. When life is normal, I sleep somewhere around 8 hours, but I'm never rested, no matter how much or how little sleep I have. It's sad that people don't have time for sleeping. What kind of crazy world is this? travel lightly, anawar out

For me a perfect night is 5.5 to 6 hours. Anything more than that I feel like somebody has kicked me across a football field. I normally try to be in bed around midnight and I wake up automatically between 5:30 am and 6, everyday 7 days a week.

I need 8 hours of sleep a night. if I don't get this, I'm not very good at my job, and I get worn out really easily. Also, since I drive a lot, it would be dangerous for me to be sleepy. I don't see why I should try to function on less.

i really need 7 hours of sleep. but sometimes i happens that i could manage only about 5-6 hurs and thats also fine with me but as for a person he needs a 7 hours sleep. but one thing what i reaslise is i cant sleep more and if it happened and get up morning i feel bodypain and tired and if its lesser sleep than i feel more sleepy and i dont feel like getting up from bed. but 4-5 hours sleep is really very less and i dont know how you manage it.

Personally, I feel that if I get eight hours of sleep, I feel exhausted when I wake up the next morning. But if I get five or six hours of sleep, I wake up in the morning feeling refreshed. At least that's what my experience has been. The number of hours a sleep a person should have in a given night should go according to the individual person, in that everybody's body type and system is different. Keola 12

I usually take 8 hours of sleep. When doing nothing, I sleep more than that. I love sleeping, in fact it is one of my hobbies. Below 5 hours of sleep, I feel like I'm deprived of my right to regenerate my strength.
