I totally agree with your statement! That's the reason you get the time off. Giving birth does horrible things to your body! You need time to heal. Fathers, they should get a couple of days off but not nearly as much time as the mother. All they had to do was stand next to you and tell you to breath or push. Trust me, I know! My first son was 8 pounds 6.6 ounces and my second son was 9 pounds!

In the US, the law allows for men to take maternity leave as well as a woman.

In Belgium, men are allowed 10 working days off for the birth of a child. To me, this should be more as 10 days is not really enough for a man to help the mother when she comes back from hospital. Men should get at least 1 month (there is still the possibility of taking what we call here a "parental leave" but it is not paid the same!)

They can, it's called the Family Medical Leave Act. As long as the employer falls into the right category, they can take off as well. My fiancee was going to use it along with me, but didn't want to burn all his vacation time up. http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/fmla/

It all depends of which country you're from, even which state or province. Here in Montreal, QC, the mother has a maternity leave that can go up to a year. The father, has 5 weeks paternity leave that he can take as he wishes (one after the other, or separately). Some countries don't even have maternity/paternity advantages, so i consider myself to be lucky here.

I think that the father should have maternity leave also for the first 4-6 weeks atleast because becoming a new mother can make you feel overwhelmed at times and the stress of taking care of a new little one can be very demanding on a woman so i think the father should stay home and help out with the new baby. That way she the mother won't be to drained and tired to really enjoy her new little one..I helped my niece the first few days and let me tell you i was wore out and waking up all hours of the night can be very taxing on a person so yeah the men should and if they don't want to women should atleast make them take care of the child after work so she can get some rest..

That might be a good idea the husband could stay home and help out his wife. After having a baby it can be very diffcult when the women is home by herself because, she is still trying to heal and get back to her old self. God Bless

Father & Son - dad holing his baby
In my country, UK, men are allowed paternity leave, I'm not exactley sure on the duration but it is a minimum of 2 weeks, I think it comes down to the employers discretion after that as to whether or not more time is given.

I believe that both parents should have the option of family leave when a new child arrives. Being a mom, I know how difficult it is to recover and care for a new baby on your own. I think it's just as important for the dad to be there at the beginning as well - for the family, the bonding, and the helping.
