Of course they can. Mine are friends with a German Sheppard. He is like a puppy with them. They harass him and he just ignores their games. Come to think of it, perhaps mine just tolerate one another .
But! I have seen others that seemed to really play together and sleep together at friend's houses.

Yes I believe so. We have a cat and a dog and they will occasionally play. They will also fight a little to, nothing too aggressive though. My cat will get jealous if I spend too much time with our dog. Our dog is really my sisters and the cat is mine. My cat's name is Phantom and he gets jealous easily.
Just the other day they were both in the kitchen sitting on the floor and Phantom was looking at me and the dog (sniffles) was looking at Phantom. It was cute and I wanted to take a picture but I couldn't get the camera fast enough.
The dog wants to play more than the cat does. Phantom is more relaxed and just chilled. Sniffles will try and go after the cat just playing around, or he will like go in front of Phantom and then run around the house trying to get him to play. Phantom will do it but it is rare. When Sniffles is either being bad, making too much noise or something Phantom will paw him (like take his paw and pat him as to say stop it) it's funny.
We have always kept the dogs treats in this one cabinet. Well one time we ended up putting the cat's treats in there as well because we didn't feel like putting them away (most of the time they are in my room). Well now whenever we give one of them a treat we have to give the other one because they will sit there and bark or meow. They both have learned where the treats are and if one of them is begging for a treat the other one will come running and start begging two.

It's true that cats a quite lazy pet. They spend most their time sleeping. They are more active when they are still kittens. :)

They really nice. I really hope all people can love each other like they do. The world would be a much better place then.

Sure, why not? :)
My friend has 2 cats and a dog (also a rat and a parrot). She took a little kitty when her dogs was around 6-7 months. He bit him, because he didn't know kittne is so fragile, but didn't ment to really hurt him. After this incident, he was afraid to play with the cat until it was fully grown :)
Second cat appeared 4 or 5 years later, and it seems it's getting along with other two pets. Sometimes, of course, there are fights, but mainly between cats ^^"

I have always had cats and dogs and they are fast friends! In fact I have four cats and two dogs right now and they even sleep together. The only way that you can tell the difference between the cats and dogs is to look for the black fur in the pile of hair! (LOL)
I had two Rottweilers who would help me foster families of kittens and the mothers. The dogs would make sure that the kittens stayed out of trouble and they would even bathe the kittens. The kittens were a bit soggy, but they didn't seem to mind. The dogs would even allow the kittens to sleep on them! I've got pictures of the kittens climbing on the dog's heads and sliding down their backs! Rocky, the male of the Rottweilers, was a very close buddy with my Siamese KoKo, she would sleep with him and he was her protector!!! Rocky went into a depression when he lost his buddy when KoKo passed away.
If you expect the dogs and cats to get along, they will. My mini Dachshunds sleep with my cats and they also are friends with the three wild cats that I feed. The dogs will walk up and plant a big kiss on the cats, and the cats look a little annoyed, but they don't get really upset about it.

they can be if they are raised together and used to one another.
but my late dogs and late cat hated each other, just scared of one another, kind of like animal racism. cat vs dogs. the cat used to hang out in another room and was happy. as long as they didnt have to look at each other, it was peace and harmony.

I used to have a cat that was good friends with one of our dogs. They grew up together and he learned early not to chase the cat. The cat would fight back, then they became good friends. But, the cat never liked our other dog or any dog that would wander in the yard. She would chase other dogs and we would hear them yiping down the street LOL. But for that one dog, she would cuddle with him and rub against him and they were best friends.

Who knows! I think if young kittens and young pups are around each other when they are young, then it it possible. Back in my hometown, there was a kitten who played with the older dog by biting his nubby tail and the older dog loved the kitten. I've dog-sat a friend's minature English bulldog before and he was freaked out by my cats and wanted to chase the cats, and my cats were freaked out by the dog...my cats don't know what a "dog" is.

sure they can. in my neighbourhood, there is a family with a cat and a dog as pets and both get along fine. i always see them walking both together. it sort of bust my impression that dogs will chase cats when i was young. somehow, these two get together just like in garfield with odie.

Our cats were raised with our dogs, so neither one knows the difference. They don't know that they are supposed to be enemies! Unfortunately, when my daughter brought her newly adopted dog home from college, we didn't know he was a cat killer, and our cats didn't know to be afraid of him, and he killed one before we could stop him. So now, he has to stay at college when she comes home to visit.
On the other hand, our cats and dogs being friends has helped to protect our kitties from the wild coyotes we have roaming about. They won't come close to the house because of our dogs, and the cats sleep with them at night, so they are save and cozy.

I have two cats and one dog. Honestly the two cats hate each other but the dog gets along with the cats just fine. They run around the house and chase each other.
One cat pounces on the dog, the dog tackles the other cat, the cat bounces on the dog. It is a unless loop and entertaining to watch.
I think the key is to have the dog and cats grow up together, then they don't know any better.

Yes, cats and dogs can live in a friendly environment.
I have 2 English Springer Spaniels and 4 cats which are 3 males and 1 female.
There is no fighting whatsoever in my home.
They all live together in harmony and give the respect and space to each other
when needed.
My dogs are pretty sociable so they always inspect the cats when they come back in the home from being outside, to see where they have been and what they have been doing and eating. :)
