Things you'll never forget

Last week at work i sat with an elderly lady and held her hand while she passed away. It was heartbreaking and i left feeling really upset. I spoke to my friends about it but none of them could really understand what i was on about! It is something that i don't think i will ever forget, i think i will always remember her face and the shakey way she took her last breath. It's frightening when we are faced with our own mortality in this way, and of course human compassion means that this is a rather upsetting situation to be in. But on the whole i think that it is experiences like this, that i will never forget, that will help me to be a better nurse and help me to understand the nature of people and their lives/deaths. Not only that though, i think that things like this happening in my work have changed the person i am personally as well as professionally. Are there any things that you have experienced that you know you will never forget -good are bad, what experiences in life have shaped and moulded the person you have become today? Sorry this was a bit long, but this is something i've been thinking about a lot and wanted to get it written down, out of my system!!! xxx

That's bad. At least yoy learned something, that life is short and it could end anytime.
Well, i will never forget the day i got lost in the jungle of one of our Highest Mountains in our province here. I spent 24 hours alone in the cold. I thought by the time the rescuers will find me, i'd be a human posicle. That night in the jungle i did not sleep. I forced myself to stay awake to fight hypothermia. Good thing i was rescued by morning. That was the most traumatic experience for me so far.

It really was. I thoght i'd never make it alive. That was the first time I really shook uncontrollaly because of the cold (it was around 5 degrees Celsius). And it was so dark, you couldnt see your hand in front of your face. Yeah i was traumatized. Afetr that i'd have nightmares, and i refused to talk about the experience to anyone.
But i'm over it now.

There are a range of events both good and bad embedded deep in my memory. Some of them stretch back to my childhood and some as recent as a couple of years back. Although they do not bring out any strong emotions now, they do sometimes serve as reminders in guiding and deciding as I proceed in life.

I think everyone has good and bad memories that will stay with them forever and our past experiences definitely effect some of the decisions that we make in our lives xxx

oh babes i bet that was a truely humbling experience to see the life slip out of someone, it's at those moments you really sit back with fresh eyes, a fresh perspective on life. You sound like you handled it really well babes and i think your right it will definately help you be a better nurse you'll also be better prepared for next time. I can't think of one particular experience thats made me who i am today but as you well know i'm a big fan or getting thinks off your chest and writing them down so i applaud you for that and you know where i am anytime you need to talk big kisses mands

It was pretty horrid, but it's all part of life and the more i think about it, the more i knowe i did my best for her, and i can't ask anymore from myself than that, so hopefully me being there made things a bit easier for her. You're right though writing things down does help, i think i've got this stuff straightened out better in my head after i made this discussion than i would have done if i had kept it to myself!! thanks lovely, it works both ways!!! xxxx

The moment i truly remember as yesterday, is the passing away of my grandfather who had cancer, He was 79, a truly friendly man, i miss him much, like you said i immediatly thought of my own mortality, but hey, were all in the same boat i suppose and theres nothing to do 'bout it but make life better for everyone.

That's really sad for you, i'm sorry to hear that you lost your grandfather to cancer. You're right though we are all in the same boat so we just have to make the most of things and try to make life happier for other people! thanks for the response xxx

Before I answer your question let me just say that it was wonderful that you were there for that woman holding her hand at her last moments. I do understand your feelings completely.
Now for the question. I had to put 2 dogs down and I held them as they took their last breaths. One was my childhood dog, the dog I grew up with, and the other was the dog my wife and I got shortly after we got married, a dog that was like a first child to us. That was very painful to have to do both times. Also the look on my wife's face when she had to say goodbye to our dog. There was so much pain there.
Also having to make the decision to pull the plug on my mother, knowing that she would possibly never be concious again or if she would she would be a complete vegetable. Of course I didn't want to do it, but I knew it was what she would have wanted.
Those kinds of things you never forget.

Thank you for your lovely response. I can imagine how difficult it would be to say goodbye to your dogs and have to make that decision for them, pets really do become like part of the family after a while. As for the decision you made for your mother, if it what she would have wanted then it was something that you had to do, but it's good that you cared about her enough to respect her wishes. Thank you for shring your experiences with me! xxx

I also feel sad when I see a poor person and feel sorry that I can not help them all. Maybe God is unfair to everyone. Why someone is so rich but someone is so poor and helpless. I hope that we can do our best to help the helpless person. All the nature of people an live happily.
