A lot of things in a supermarket are done to make you buy more products and more expensive products. Starting from the signage, the window displays, the lighting and ambience. Colourful and Jazzy signs indicating that certain products are on sale. The way you walk through the store and the placement of the products The packing of products. and of course so much more.... It's in a way seducing you into buying more than the actually set out to. How often do you fall for this ? or do you always walk out with what you need ?

Well, it's been quite some time since I did some serious shopping for long hours. If I'm not mistaken, the last time was when I shopped with my younger female sibling. She was still a college student then while I was already employed as an accounting staff with my first employer way back 1997 to 2002. And every weekends, it used to be a routine for both of us to visit the malls while we do window shopping or some real shopping. Naturally, I paid for all of the stuff we bought; be it mine or hers or for home use, because I was the one working. But since I got married more than five years ago, I rarely go out with my siblings or go shopping anymore. I guess there are more important things or matters which should be prioritized than shopping. There are more bills to pay, loans still outstanding, and we still have no savings for our child's future education. But sometimes, I really miss shopping because we have considered this as a type of recreation during those days. If ever my spouse and I buy groceries in the supermarket, usually our funds are so limited that we've got no choice but to buy only the basics for us. There were times when we had more cash then and I could say that we did indulge in some items on sale but we bought what we only can afford.

Sometimes we do learn the hard way and then there are those times that we don not have the resources to splurge or even do that extra bit of shopping as we may feel like. Thanks for sharing your views.

That should be an interesting story. It's tough to be the way you are and stick to the things you need. I suppose it counts for a lot of discipline and experience in life.

oh i definitely can... i try my best to control myself and tell myself to buy stuffs that i only NEED... not what i WANT... unless if i have extra money, then i will treat myself every now and then... otherwise, i will try to stick closely to my budget and not overspend... being focused and having a list before you go shopping can help a lot... take care and have a nice day...

The focus bit i try. The list i take, but it remains in my pocket. So the tendency to treat myself a little too often. Thanks for the response

Hello there, I can resist for the new and kinds of attracted packing stuff as I know what I want and what I need. Years of shopping experiences have taught me not to judge the ‘book by its cover’. If I really want to try the new arrivals, I will wait until there is sale or promotion so that I can give it a try in a reasonable price. Sometimes I will ask friends for advice as well.

Learning the hard way and with experience certainly makes us smarter when it comes to going through a new shopping experience. Nothing wrong with asking friends for advice. Thanks and have a great day.

I usually won't fall for the trick that used by supermarket. I have worked as promoter before. Therefore I know all the tricks. I only will buy the things I need. I also prefer to compere prices before buying. Usually I will buy according to the list I made. By doing this I will not over spend. I still can save some money.

Yes almost certainly. Placement of items at the checkouts and brand names at the most easily reachable and immediate entrance points.Am I seduced , almost certainly , during a recent health kick I invested in seven seas, innocent drinks and the food doctor .Sometimes it is difficult to spot the odd white lie when its packaged scientifically .

We've been trying to eat more healthy food, so if it's produce that we haven't tried, we'll get it. Other than that, we stick to our list - we don't want to waste food.

I usually can be pretty good about going into a store and not buying things. Sometimes I may be tempted especially if I am hungry or something so I may make impulse buys sometimes. However, usually by automatically walking away from something that looks interesting and not lingering, I can stop myself from buying something that I really do not need. I just have to make a more conscious effort not to buy things.

The concious effort to stay awa and not get swayed from all those things trying to attract you is what is the key. Thanks

Alok, first of all heartiest congratulations, I see a blue star is shining alongside your name. Well done!!! I agree with you that super markets do attract us. Their ambience and their displays undoubtedly attract us. I just go to the malls to enjoy the atmosphere. I hesistate to buy from big showrooms, where rates remain quite high. I just check out my budget and if the products displayed over there are not within my reach, I do not mind returning empty handed. I feel mesmerised by the big show rooms, airconditioned enviornment, trendy displays and sometimes beautiful sales-girls, but somehow I manage to resist myself and do not land in their trap........LOL! We go to buy our items or say clothings etc. to those markets, where we could bargain and could get worth of our money.

If one goes with an open mind and a fixed budget then it's much easier to handle. That way one does not fall into the trap. Thanks Dpk for the response. BTW. Thanks for the congratulations. But it sure seems some a short lived moment of glory, cause its back to red again. Really does not matter to me. I'm happy with the friends and the content of the responses that i get. That's all that matters.

I agree with your contention about budget. Please do not worry you will get the blue star again, if you continue with same kind of dedication and efforts. Best of Luck!

I go shopping with a list of what I need. If I go in knowing that I want a snack, I'll go to the snack aisle, but mostly I only go to the aisles that have what I came for. I don't pay any attention to the fancy displays.

yes, we shop at a very bare bones grocery store that doesnt have a whole lot of selection but good prices. i find the more classier grocery stores are very expensive and charge you for everything! we only run into those for our cold meat (our store doesnt have a deli counter) nor does it give away free grocery bags.

Avoiding the more expensive ones is a way to keep to buying what we actually need. Thanks.

i do like to busy on supermarkets because it is much comfortable and every relaxing even though sometiems i don't have any thing in mind that i really need to buy. i will just buy anything that comes along the way that i feel attracted to buy. like i will something impulsively. but i just give in to the urge to buy things that i don't need but will make me feel satisfied owning it. cause i think it is still worth it to buy those things that will make us happy. though it will be uselyess. but making us happy with the products that we have bought has served its purpose already and worth the money that we spent on it and we should not try to avoid buying those things just because there are no use ofr it. having things or acquiring things even though not needed is good and therapeutical also and relaxes our minds and gives us some sense of reward and accomplishments. sometiems i will feel so rewarded on the items that i have bought on the supermarket. and just for that great feeling though it will not going to last for many days i think it is still worth to buy those items. but i will make it sure that the items are not too ridiculously expensive so that i will not going to feel guilty in buying it. but sometimes i love bragging to my friends about the items that i have bought and sometimes i just buy those expensive things so that i can brag about them. i love going to the supermarkets because of the beautiful things that i see in side. and the new items i get to know. sometimes it is edcational too and add knowledge to mee to go to the supermarkets cause it makes me updated on the latest on the market that will be useful to our homes. and sometimes when i am the first to get to vbuy or know them i feel so happy that i have gone to the supermarket.

Since at this time I only have money for exactly what I am going to the store to buy I don't fall for the displays. I used to though. I would come out of the store with whatever new item was on display.
