Do you believe in the old cliche 'Good music lasts'?

Often when discussing any music older than ten or twenty years I encounter that age old cliche, but surely there are talented bands and some great music which really does not 'last'. Are there any genius musical artists that you consider to have been lost to time?
For me, being very young, I only know about the big names of the past 60s, 70s and 80s.
The reason for this question is solely to use some users suggestions and check out some old music!

yes i definitely do. they say if the song has been revived it means it really is a good song. but still, there are songs that we would prefer the original versions.

I think that cliche just means that good music will always be considered good music. You know the screamo music of today may not be considered good music twenty years down the road. Good music is the stuff we pass down to our children. My kids are definitely going to know who John Waite is. =D
