Do you celebrate it and have lots of fun?
What do you do for it?
I personally do not rate the whole thing very much, I have kids but to be honest I do not get it at all. I do let the kids dress up, and I do help them with costumes and such but it is my hubby that takes them trick or treating and that is all that happens in my area. Nothing major, not much dressing up of houses, not much in the way of parties etc and I do not give sweeties out from the door. Instead I stick a council notice in the window that asks people not to call. Not because I am mean you have to understand but simply because a lot of really big kids go around trick or treating and they can be really intimidating.
So what things happen in your house halloween and can anyone tell me what the real meaning of it is please?

I actually love halloween. I love seeing the kids and even the older ones all dressed up. When I was a kid, we all stopped about age 11. Now kids do go out much older....mine did. I loved it. I used to dress up and go to parties but haven't for a while now. It's just fun. Even the toilet paper and spray foam...it's tradition...it's all in fun. What I don't like is the out and out vandalism. Then again, those are not generally the older kids who dress up and go out for candy.

Halloween used to be fun, and still can be. since my kids are grown up I do not enjoy it much at all. Here is my situation. We live in a rather upscale neighborhood and every year I watch people drop off car loads of kids at my corner. They then proceed to trick or treat their way through. Because i am on the entrance corner of the neighborhood I see this happening. One year a large bunch of teenagers came to my door and said some pretty obscene things to me. I was alone, so I locked the door and turned off the lights after that happened. I love the little children who live in my neighborhood, but hate to take a chance on being bullied again. I wish I could think of a way to just give to the beighborhood kids. Have you ever heard of "trunk or treat"? I think that is a neat idea. People drive their cars to a church (or other ) parking lot, open thier car trunks and the kids go from car to car getting treats. I would do that, but the neighbors don't want to do it that way.

I don't do anything for halloween any more, my son is 32 and nobody even comes down our street, it is a 1 way street so the kids just don't bother. There are only houses on one side of the street.

Nothing! We don't allow our boy to attend any parties or watch any cartoons pertaining to Halloween! If his class is having a party that day then he will be kept home from school!
In Fact, This year I'll be helping my parents move that day so my boy will be with one of my friends as my husband has to work the week-end. But last year, I kept him home and there is no costume for my boy either...We do this because of our Christian beliefs!

Oh, thanx for sharing with me, I never really think of the religious side of it, it is just a day that comes around once a year and costs me money!

I love Halloween. I don't go crazy about it like I have seen other houses do. I just get a few pumpkins which I paint faces on and put them on my front porch. I also have this really cute Pumpkin lamp that is about 3 feet tall that I plug in and put on my front porch. Then I just pass candy out to the kids. I used to love when they came to my door. I still do but, now my neighbor 2 houses down, and I sit at the ends of our driveways and chit chat back and forth while we wait for the kids to come to our houses. I also have a few other Halloween decorations throughout the inside of my house. Just small knick knacks here and there.
I do sort of get irritated by the teenagers that come around. But, what can I do? Either I give them each a piece of candy or they egg or TP my house. I would rather satisfy their immature sweet teeth than have my house vandalized. LOL!

I did a pumpkin once, it collapsed. I am just useless with the whole thing. Egging a house is a favourite around here too, although so far it has never happened to mine. here is hoping it will stay that way.

I honestly don't understand why it is so widely celebrated considering what it was originally about. It is a British tradition from days from hundreds of years ago. Poor children would go around the more affluent houses begging for food at "Samain" which, if I recall correctly, is the time of harvest in the Celtic year. It is the time, so they believe, that there is a door between this world and the next. Hallowe'en (or All Hallows Eve) and the things we do now stem from all of that. The children who begged for food would threaten to put a spell on those who did not give them food (hence "trick or treat".
Anyway, no we don't have lots of fun for it. We used to think it was an American tradition with little meaning and, as we are not American, saw no reason to celebrate. As we discovered it was British and the meaning behind it, I still can't see any reason for wanting to celebrate it. My kids like to dress up and if they are invited to a party, that's fine but we don't do anything at home and there is no way I would let my kids go trick or treating. The kids who do go round here are just greedy. I mean, the original point was that this was the rare occasion the poor kids would have something good to eat whereas now, the kind of kids who come round have got more than we have so I see no reason to give sweets or anything to them, especially when I can't always give that sort of thing to my own kids.

No I do not celebrate this pagan day it is the evilest day of the year and is derived from pagan customs and satanic practices. We live far out in the country and children do not come to our door. We would not have anything for them if they did. I do not like this worldly holiday. I hate shopping in stores this time of year. I am terrified of spiders and even fake one scare me and seems everyone has to have them on display. They should be more aware of many like me who have archniphopia and not put up such horrible frightening displays. Everyone has things that scare them people would not like things displayed they are afraid of. Merchants only care about money not about people. This is Satans special holiday and we never celebrate it our children did not and nor do most our grandchildren.

I don't really understand Halloween myself, but I know I loved it as I was growing up! I loved dressing up && going door to door for candy...
But on that note... I now have 2 kids && now a days people don't go door to door anymore. I never have anyone coming to my door on Halloween. I think people just do other things with their kids.
It's all about safety these days...
I let my kids dress up every Halloween && we usually go places like Wal-Mart or some Church, School that usually every year sets up a safe trick or treat area for the kids. The kids don't go door to door, they can go down the halls of the school or church... && if done at Wal-Mart, here, they let the kids walk down all the rows && someone passes out candy.
SO the kids can still go out && have fun... just in a safe way...
I sometimes decorate the house, but just to get in the Halloween spirit for my kids.... but nothing big.

Hi gemini,
It is my first year here and to celebrate this Halloween thing, in our city( My Country) this is not a big thing! We use to have holiday by NOv 1 and 2 to give honor of the Saints as well as for the family to visit their loved ones who departed already so I didn't grow up celebrating it like the way people celebrate it here in USA or Europe etc!
ANyway, hubby said before, he used to hang out with friends for dinner that time..I have no plan to have some decor in our house!

I was not brought up to celebrate it either, not because my parents did not believe in it they just did not make a big fuss over it all. Plus they had a pub to run and so there was always a lot of promotions to do at that time so that kept them fairly busy!

In my town, We kind of celebrate the Halloween day. Like chirmast day, it is now very popular all over the world. There will be parties in lots of universities. Usually, the youth especially the students pay more attention to these kinds of foreign festivals. Most adults still totally ignore them. In fact, yound people here are more busy with celebrating a western festival. I don't know why. But it dose happpen. Mid-autuman day, which is an important traditional Chinese festival, for example, people do nothing but have some dinner together with their families. Christmas day, on the other hand, people will buy present for their friends as u do. Also, wherever you go, you will meet some " Christmas man".
All in all, the Halloween day will be kind of hot here!

Hi Gemini, This is something I have never celebrated either until recently and that is because my neighbour is really into and decorates her house up as it were Christmas with webs and bats and allsorts of creepy crawly things and really goes to town. I will let my son wear a costume and go trick and treating with her as it is a well organised group that simply has fun, no funny stuff like eggs and flour and things. I feel for the elderly at this time of year and actively encourage them to put the council stickers up. I am ba humbug too and have a poster saying no one to call. I think it is celebrated more in USA than here in the UK and just another money money time of year for the shops eh! You might see me flying on my broomstick if you look up to the sky LOL but thats usually because I am on a mission to help someone somewhere. Must really get an elctric hoover to fly on, will take far less time to get there don't you think?. Huggles Ellie :D

Yes I feel for the elderly, my son went trick or treating last year, 16 and trick or treating and I do not think it is right. I mean I know he would not torment people but it is scary to open the door to a group of nearly 6ft teenagers.
I have the leaflets up and my hubby says I am mean, but I just do not feel happy with having strangers coming to my door for sweets, I never have. I dont know why. Already my local supermarket has tons of halloween stuff and actually it is pretty reasonable, if you have one child. I have three to buy for, it adds up then!
electric hoover!Funny.

Yes, children dress up in all kinds of costumes and go house to house trick or treating. I think that the idea is that the people in the houses give candy, but if they do not a trick is then played on the person. Only sometimes kids take the tricks a bit too far.

It' not really a big thing in my neighborhood. But I see very interesting costumes in the mall and I thought it might be nice to dress up my little girl and go trick or treating inside the mall. I think it's safer. Kids love Halloween, so I think we should enjoy it too.

Yes, we celebrated halloween. My daughter and I live together and we went out and
bought a bunch of different decorations at the dollar store and we decorated our house
inside and out. It was a lot of fun and now that we have them all we can just use them
all again next year and wwe don't have to buy anymore.
But we were dissappointed in halloween this past year. We moved to a new house and we
hardly had any kids at our door at all. We made up 100 packages and only ended up
giving away 5 packages. So we took the rest of the 95 packages and donated them to the
day care centre down the block from us. I am sure they enjoyed all the candy.
Alrighty then, talk to you later my friend,
Have a good mylotting day, Chris

my son enjoys it and because he enjoys it i do too. i go with him trick or treating and i get a kick out of seeing the little kids trick or treating. one thing that annoys the heck out of me though is the really big kids like 15 or 16 who wear no costume but just come with a big pillow case for the candy and they are so rude. there have been times when i did not answer the door at all in the past before i had my son. i stop answering the door at dinner time around 6 and i think it is really rude to let your kid trick or treat at that time as people are trying to eat so i will not answer. at a certain time i turn off my porch light and won't answer, like about 7:00 pm or so.

Yes this is what gets me too, the bigger kids. I am not saying that they should not be able to have any fun but they go around in gangs and they are intimidating. I have never answered my door on halloween and I always tell people that I will not answer too.

I do like Halloween. I wanted to have some trick or treaters, but we won't get any because our apt. is gated, and we just moved here. So it sucks. I haven't passed out candy on my own yet! lol. I think I'm just going to dress up with my dog, and eat some candy and popcorn, and watch some scary movies.
