Do you call yourself a writer?

When I first started writing, it took a while before I actually told people I was a writer. You know, when they would ask what I did or what kind of work I did. I had to sell several articles before I felt I could say I was a freelance writer. Now when I say that, people are usually pretty interested in it. What about you? Do you tell people you are a writer?

No, I don't tell people that I am a writer. I don't call myself a writer. I write in my journals every day. I write here at Mylot and at a few other online sites but I don't consider myself a writer. I guess for me personally I would have to be published somewhere offline to feel like a writer. Or maybe even on an online version of a magazine. Right now, I just don't feel like a writer so I don't call myself one.

no i cant tell that i am a writer and i am really managinging to write here in mylot and i dont think only due to this i can consider myself as a writer. if i try writing anything else on any topic also i can just write a few sentence or i can say it as briefly i just finish it all and i think this will not be enough and hence i dont consider myself as a writer.
like you i have heard other people too telling that they write articles but i am really surprised sometimes to just think of all of you who write articles and i just have one thing in my mind that how you all manage to write so much.
i honestly telling i have not written any articles and i have only once had a look at one article as i had an idea of start writing articles but seeing one itself i thought i cant do this and its not my kind of job.
so tell me how do you manage writing so much, i really tell you its a great effort from you all.

I write as much as I can, but since at the moment I only do it for fun, I don't think I could really tell people that that's my job. But once I start writing for other purposes (in addition to doing it for fun of course), then I'll start saying that's what I do.

Yea I do...I've never had anything published (not yet at least) and I'm not a professional but I'm a writer none the less....Why? because i write from my heart and soul...Just like I'm an artist...Am I good at any of it? Maybe, maybe not..but its not important to me...its still something i'm passionate about and thats all that matters to me ya know..

I don't know if I can call myself a writer. What makes a writer a writer? Is it when they have something published somewhere? I write almost every day, either on the computer or in my journal. But lately, I realized that my writing has kind of deteriorated. Probably because I've not been reading and writing much lately. Just been lazing around going online and reading nonsensical stuff.
Recently I sent a book review to a local newspaper and they rejected it. they told me that the writing was not up to their standard and that it'd need a lot of editing. Boy, that was harsh but maybe it's reality. I then knew that I had to brush up on my writing. How to write better? Read more and write more, it seems.
It's hard to be a writer, that's how I feel. Because not everyone will like what you write. But maybe with practice, one can really succeed as a writer.
Good luck to all writers! :D

I normally don't tell people i'm a writer, because to me, if im not published in a book, then i don't feel like a writer. Although I have been published in 5 different books it's still not my own book. There is a lot of red tape that I would have to go through for it, and it's a long and grueling process, that I will eventually make. Just not right now.
If you feel in your heart that you are a writer, then it does not matter. If you want to call yourself a writer, then do it, and be proud. Writing is very hard, to come up with things, to brainstorm, it's a mental challenge. And those who have the skills and the potential should grasp it and be very happy to do so. Great discussion.

yes i did before because i have works that have been published already but since i do not work as a writer now, i call myself what my line of work requires. but people sometimes call me a writer so it's okay.

i started writing when my mother passed away it was a coping skill to help me deal with my pain i wrote when ever i could and anywhere on the back of my notebooks on napkins on scraps of paper i just put all my thought down.later in life i continued to write and i realized that i was good at it and others noticed it to. i consider my self a writed because it is what i do...i write i put my life into it its my safe place to express how i feel without being judged. so im a writer. i do tell people and i let them read my works i was on a newspaper staff before but now i write for my enjoyment

I call myself a writer even though it is not my full time occupation. I like to think that I am good enough to call myself a writer. *LOL*
