do you have a hole in your sock?

This morning I was such in a hurry to go to work that I did not realise that I picked up an old pair of sock. When I put them on one of my feet finger stood out of one of the socks. I was such in a hurry that I kept them on and proceeded hastily to work. When I returned home I threw my socks in the dustbin instead of the laundry basket. I kept thinking about grandma who was always used to mend clothes and socks. I really wonder how many people nowadays have the time to do that. Do you mend your own socks or clothes? Or do you buy new ones?

I didn't think anyone darned socks any more? I certainly don't and neither does my mum, they go in the bin straight away. They are easy and cheaply replaced and I guess that's why no one darns any more, it was different in the 50s, 60s and probably the 70s when money was in short supply and certainly during the rationing, money was very tight and people had to make ends meet. I hate holy socks because my toes always find the hole and it can be quite painful rubbing against them. Trouble is if one sock goes do you get rid of both of them even if the other sock hasn't got a hole in it?

That is what I mentioned as well. I recall my grandma 50 years ago mending socks. But not since the early 60's have I seen anyone darniong socks. They are so cheap to just buy new ones. But now days things are getting really tight we may have to start mending our own clothes etc for the sake of saving pennies here and there. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Holey socks are so annoying, aren't they? If the hole is small, I usually don't toss them out right away, I just make sure I use that sock on the opposite foot where the big toe wouldn't be sticking out. Once the hole gets too big or another one appears, out they go. I've had that problem just this last few days. Every pair of socks I took from the drawer had a hole somewhere, so I ended up tossing one here and there and matching up the rest of them. I had one that had a big hole where the heel had worn out, so that one disappeared too. Colder weather is coming and I'll be wearing (and wearing out!) more socks. Time to invest in more of them because no, I don't think I'll be darning any - darn it!

Hello ronaldinu, I still wear socks and some have holes on it. I tried patching some of my socks with holes but my other socks also keep getting holes. I think because they are old and my toenails keep rubbing with them and causes the holes in my sock. Some on my heels and these are reallly old sock already. I keep mending then until they are not usable anymore. Regards.

I hate holes in socks. The horrible way it feels when your toe pops out the hole or that balb spot on the heel where your heel sticks to the shoe. Ughhhh! I wouldnt even know how to darn a sock. I have in the past try sewing across the hole on machine but it just dont feel right after. So anymore i just throw them away When i buy socks i usually buy several or at least two pairs that look alike. That way if one gets a hole you have a spare.

The stuff we do when we are in a hurry! Lol, I swear us human beings just do the darnest things on earth, and we are supposed to be the smartest living thing on Earth. Oh Well, things like this happens to everybody once in a while. It has happened to me before too years ago when i was still in Secondary School and boy was it embarassing especially when we had to take off our shoes to measure our heights and weights. Everyone was just laughing at the big toe that was sticking out! Thats the worst memory I have about school, that till today I had never really lived it down. Well, well, well.. Mending clothes and socks seems to be thing of the past, especially when apparals and clothings just gets cheaper and cheaper as the competition between retailers increased. I had never mended my clothes or socks before and will never do so in the future. It had became too much of a habit just to throw the spoilt clothings and socks away rather than wasting the time to mend them. If a particular clothes is something that I really liked, I would then bring it down to the tailor and pay them money to mend the stuff for me. Lol, this would become something of the past, and youngsters like me are becoming lazier and lazier. Hehe, I must admit that I had been too pampered and too spoilt to do or learn a simple task like this. But I really respect my granny when I see her sewing on scraps to make a blanket than buy a new one! That is because of their hard work, sweat and blood that had given us what we have today. This is something that I must salute and respect her for! Well, hopefully there are still some traditional souls out there who would preserve this culture for the years to come! Well, take care! =)

Heck no who does have time to sew up a sock these days. If i throw a pair i go to walmart and get a new 12 pack of socks and call it a year. Unfortunately my wife takes all my socks so i always end up getting the pair that does have a whole in it or something. We've actually found a bunch that have holes in them so we're probably going to ask for short socks for X-mAS. LOL.

I could never where a sock with a hole in it. As soon as I see a hole in it, I toss it or try to use it as a rag or something. I don't tend to mend my socks, but I do mend other clothes like my shirts and sometimes my jeans. If there is a little hole in my jeans I would sew it up with a cute little patch or something.

I do not know many people now days that mend their own socks. I seldom wear socks from March through October actually. But they are cheap enough that I buy new ones each Christmas usually so I have a good supply of hole free socks. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I did that one time. I never sew or darn a sock when it gets a hole in it. I just throw the socks away and buy new ones.

When my younger son left to move to his first house, he left all his socks around. Some of them were worn and had holes so I threw them away. I used to darn socks, but found that the mending wool - get it in varied shades - did not match the socks. Besides I need glasses for close work and so I do not mend unless I have to. Now I will mend my slacks, and if there is a seam coming loose I will sew it up and mend a hem. I really should get a new sewing machine as mine is over thirty years old, but for socks, there are so many of them, that I would not bother. And many of the socks do not match anyway and besides they do not exactly fit my feet.

I do my own laundry and when I see that one of my socks has a hole, I throw it in the garbage. And I check them all everytime I do the laundry or when I take them off my feet. I hate nothing more than a hole in my socks. It is irrating and it is embarassing if someone sees it. I buy a bag of socks about every four months. I only pay $10 for a bag of 10 pairs of black socks. So I don;t care that I throw away the ones with holes. I used to patch them and patch them and patch them, till they hurt my feet, the stitchings. But I now got smart and just throw them away right away. They are so cheap to buy that it just isn't worth darning them.

I do not know anyone who has ever mended holes in socks, but my mom mends wholes in shirts and pants if they are on a seem, because she is good at sowing, and I have noticed there are times when my socks end up getting wholes in them, and then my mom tells me to just throw them away and she buys me new socks, she thinks it is bad to wear a sock with a whole in it,but I do not see it as a bad thing,as long as the whole is not really big.

Hi there my friend. I will probably throw the socks away as they come at very cheap prices - if i think about it, at those prices they might be supposed to only be worn once, but i keep and wash them until they get holes. The cloths on the other hand i will probably try to salvage them and probably ask my grandmother to mend them as they are far more expensive than a pair of socks and i can't always afford to buy new cloths.

I think socks today are very poor quality. I seem to go through them really quickly - and so do my husband and son, even though my son's socks are expensive thick woollen work ones, which should last a while. I definitely don't darn them, though - I think those days are long gone!

No, I don't not really. As soon as I get a hole in any of mine I chuck them. I just bought 2 new packages of socks for myself.

Who mends clothes anymore? I can't sew even to save my life. I think gone are the days when people would mend clothes. It is easier to throw socks and underwear away when they have holes in them. Luckily for me, I don't use socks. :) Cheers and happy mylotting

Mend socks!! No way, my Nanna had a blue hard very scrathed ball that she used to put in the socks to darn them. My children won't wear slippers so they are always getting holes in there socks and in the bin they go or the rag bag.

Probably people love to mend last time. Now not many people likes to it as they think it is a waste of time. Maybe buying new ones are much more faster then mending it. For me, i think i would mend my clothes instead of socks. seriously i think i would really mend or ask people to mend the clothes that i really like. If you throw away, i dont think it is easy to find something identical.
