Stroller on escalator

We went last week to a mall to buy some teether for my baby and while we were at the escalator I saw some babies on stroller and they were on escalator. Isn’t it one of the no no on strollers? I mean it could lead to accidents? Isn’t it safer to just ride an elevator and not risk the babies? Oh my I really can’t understand why they have to put through that kind of risk. How about you? Have you seen this? It is very rampant in our local malls.

I actually wrote a similar discussion several months ago.
I know it is one of the no no's at my local mall. Not only have I seen people do this with their babies, but other things that they shouldn't do as well, like riding the escalator railing. And there are signs posted next to the escalators at this mall stating the do's and don'ts while riding an escalator, but I guess a lot of people haven't read it, or if they have they just don't care. And I've read that serious injuries can occur because of this. Yet some people don't care until it happens to them. It's sad, really.

You're right Hatley, no one should be treated like that. Thank goodness you weren't seriously injured!

hi I was once knocked down on an escalator by someone taking
three steps at a time. I was not badly hurt, just bruised and shaken but I was in my late seventies and should not have had to be treated like that. I could have broken bones in that fall.

I think it's more of how you feel about it rather than being right or wrong on whether or not to do this. I don't like using escalators myself so I'm not very comfortable using a stroller on one. I have done it before when we were in DC using the metro. There really wasn't a way around using escalators either and our daughter was in a stroller.
I was nervous about it but we ended up folding up the stroller and carying her anyway when we were using the metro because it was hard getting into the train with a stroller anyway. I don't have to worry about it anymore since both our kids are beyond the stroller but I avoided them if I could. Heck, even without a stroller, I try to avoid them!
I have seen this quite a few times and it doesn't really bother me if I see someone doing it as long as they are doing it the right way. I have seen signs for them too.

I have done it once with my daughter in the stroller but never after that. I'm like you and would rather not use them. I just have mixed feelings with others doing it. Sometimes I have seen others doing this and the stroller wasn't on the escalator properly and that bothered me. I just think as long as it is done properly, I doesn't bother me but I would prefer not to do it myself unless I didn't have any other choice.

I don't think it's a problem, I did it multiple times myself, you just have to put them on right. In our country, most escalators have a picture on it with the way you should put a stroller on it. Sometimes you just have to use it. I have two children close at age, so I had a double stroller. You know, where you can have two kids after each other, so they are long. If there isn't an elevator, it's almost impossible to get up or down stairs, so you need to use the escalator.

Yes it is a no-no. But some people get in a hurry. Or don't want to be inconvienced by looking for the elevator. I've seen it, yes. And it makes me shake my head. I will always look for the elevator. Like I tell my daughter safety first.

I never tried to use the escalator when i got my baby on stroller or push chair, i feel it isn't safe. So i always taking the lift/elevator for safety. Coz sometimes we didn't know the accident it always comes when we are not prepared. So i always put in my mind that it's better to safe than to be sorry. And then you can see that on the escalator thee's a sign that stroller is not allowed so why you still using it lolz. Happy posting.

I do not recall ever seeing this but it sounds really dangerours to me also. I think it poses a threat to the child and the person attending it too. There are so many things that could happen.

In my home country it is not usual for strollers to go up and down escalators. People take strollers up and down in the elevator. However is just an escalator and stairs I would take my son's stroller up the stairs. I took my son on a trip to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia this summer. Many of our accommodation choices meant staying in rooms upstairs. I had to carry my stroller down then get my son and then take my son up then get my stroller.

Hi, pehpot. I have never seen anything like this before. But I do think that it is more safer to use the elevator when a baby is in a stroller. The parent of this child, or caregiver don't want to risk the Escalator stalling for some reason. It is probably best for them to place the stroller in the brake mode to avoid any injuries.

I've seen it in my own two eyes together with a friend that the Arab woman who keep his Son in the Stroller in which it is this one we used in our grocery food and then they go down in which term that the woman just shout suddenly and the baby sitter is just trying to jumped unto the place just to save the baby and yes she did it save the baby into trouble but it the baby sitter who is injured in her forehead and the left arm is injured and even lead them to the Hospital emergency...for that I would never allowed my daughter to be in the stroller when going down in the escalator......

Hi pehpot.
I always see this at the mall. and personally I don't advice that parents should do this. there are elevators on the mall and they can use it. and I think it is prohibited but they are just not strict in implementing it.
take care

Living in New York City, I see this ALL the time. In fact, I do it myself alot. Of COURSE, if there's an elevator, you HAVE to take the time to use it. But it's a fact here, that there aren't elevators in a lot of public places, including (if you can believe it) MOST subway stations. If you back the stroller onto the escalator and pay attention, it's fine. You just put all the weight on the back wheels (backing on when you're gong up), so the stroller stays level. I've never seen or heard of an incident with a stroller on the escalator. Sure, it's not the best or safest option, but until New York builds more elevators, sometimes it's the only option.

It depends on stroller and yet I could tolerate if that is going up as long as they are 2 adults. But of course I can't tolerate or even imagine if that is going down. I've seen that already and it was like my God! I just really hope that nothing will happen. I won't also do that, better yet to use elevator. It is better to be late(of course if you are in hurry) and safe than sorry.

Strollers on not allowed on escalator?? I dunno about that.. Because in singapore, i think our strollers are allowed on it, and that they cant be left alone.. hehe ^_^ Though taking a lift is much more safer, but most of the times, most ple won't give way to prams, and parents with babies also dun like to squeeze inside the lift too.. Furthermore, sometimes they are just going one level up the mall, and it's such a hassle to find a lift just to go up to the next level..

yes i know that its risky and i had also seen this and even we do it sometimes but everytime i take my son out of it and carry him and my husband brings the stroller from the escalator. you know but there is no other way left as we need to go out for shopping and we just cant leave our baby anywhere alone right and we need to carry him along with us and if the shopping mall dont have a lift then how do we carry the stroller and hence we nee to take this step but i get scared of this and hence i take my son with me and take the empty pram on escalators.
usually we have all facilities everywhere and the government has made such good facilities specially for the mothers carrying childrens but i dont know how that some malls dont have a lift and only consists of escalators and they have not kept in mind the constumers carrying a baby with stroller.

Actually we did this once, me, my best friend, and my other best friend and her daughter, we were at the mall. My friend has apparently done this many times as she was quite adept at it. It was pretty safe as my other best friend and I positioned ourselves, on in front of them holding the other end of the stroller and the other at the back of our friend. We were completely unaware that it wasn't allowed. However, in my opinion, I don't believe it's that dangerous as long you hold on to it and stand still, and there is no pushing and shoving on the escalator.
