Why do people refuse to stop smoking even if they are positive of cancer?

Last night, I had dinner with a few friends who were in their sixties. One of them was diagnosed of cancer and was advised by the doctor to stop smoking. We asked him how he was and if he stopped smoking and he laughed. He said, "Smokers can't live without a stick of cigarette for a day." After dinner, he lit a stick of cigarette and had his smoke. Why do people poison themselves with smoke? They prefer to get sick rather than stop the vice. Is there anyone who knows the answer?????

smoking is an extremely difficult addiction to quit....next best thing to heroin from what I hear. I am a smoker and have off and on battled with quitting....it is extremely difficult. I think if i were in my 60's and diagnosed with cancer ....at that point what would quitting do? would it get rid of the cancer or give me back my life? it wouldn't so I would just probably continue on. at that age i'd feel i had lived a pretty full life anyway.

When my mom found out she had lung cancer she stop smoking. I wish she would of stop before she knew she had cancer. I quit smoking 7 months ago and let me tell you something, 3 day's after I quit smoking I got the nastiest sinus infection that would not go away until 5-6 months later. I was basically on antibiotics for almost 5 1/2 months. I never had to take antibiotics for a sinus infection when I was a smoker, infact I never got a sinus infection to where I ever had to take antibiotics until I quit smoking. I was very sick for a long time after I quit smoking, I even got tested for cancer because I was worried that I had something worse because I never have been so sick in my life and it seems like no matter what I did to get better, nothing seem to work. I also got a ear infection, chest infection, & a throat infection after quitting. They never tell people that sometimes you get really sick after you quit smoking. After months of dealing with infections I am now well and infection free. I still have sinus problems and have congestion & allergy problems but nothing like I did before. My doctor told me that sometimes after people stop smoking that they get reoccurring infections for up to a year after they stop smoking because a person's body is readjusting and detoxing from all the impurities that smoking caused.

some say they smoke to rilieve stress, for these kind to stop smokig even if they are positive of cancer. stress has to stop coming.one of the best ways to ask a smoker to stop smoking; you have to ask him or her to minimize smoking per day.
as a doctor that smokes for God sake how will that doctor advice an addicuted smoker like him self to stop. and as i alway say change is the hardest thing in life. but you smoker can change and win ann also live long. thanks

Well I will tell you in my experience. My grandmother was diagnosed with lung cancer when she was in her 60's. She did continue to smoke. She finally quit when she was put into a home at the age of 85. They continually ran tests to see if the cancer was growing or spreading, well it wasn't. She passed on in January believe it or not from a bladder infection. The cancer just sat there. I know that there are complications that can be caused by smoking but in grandma's case she was happy smoking and I would have expexcted nothing less from her. I myself smoke and can not picture me smoking at the age of 60. I can feel the effects of it now and I am only 33. So I suppose what the answer is is that the people are happy and will make their own decision on what makes them happy. I do not believe that a non smoker will ever understand that fully.

i know what you mean...you might think their being hard headed but the truth is its not easy to quit...i am on the same situation you are referring right now and i am a smoker..though i don't smoke a lot than what i use to smoke before i find it so hard to quit even f I'm ill..one reason is because of stress...having such illness is not easy to bear...it can draw a lot of stress in life and whenever i feel stressed thinking i am ill the more i smoke..i tried so many times to quit and the only thing i had done is just to minimize the actual amount I'm smoking...i wish someday i i can say i quit

The man is going to die, he knows this and stopping smoking now is not gone to take the cancer away. Leave the man alone. People tried to do this with my grandfather. He was actually in the hospital dying and my grandmother was trying to take his smokes away. I was too young to remember all this but after a person is so far gone they know their fate, stop pressuring him to stop, hes a grown man and gone to do what he wants too anyway.

It's a difficult to me to stop smoking, because smoking is my favorite hobbies.Though some of people think it's harmful for you health. But I think it's a interest.some of my friends and doctor advised me to stop it.I would rather no food than stop smoking. As for Cancer,I don't matter it.I prefer to do my interesting thing.

Everyone knows smoking is bad for health but they still insist to smoke, mainly because of addiction. Smokers just cannot stop smoking for even a day because they cannot stand for the addiction. They feel suffering when the addiction comes, they would choose to stop the addiction by smoking rather than stop smoking. My boyfriend is a smoker too and I hate so much about this habit. I have tried several ways to stop him from smoking but I have failed to stop him. But one good thing is at least he smokes less recent days.

the best excuse I can come up with is that they
figure if they are going to die, they might as
die happy or at least doing what they want to
do... i can't speak completely for them, but I
know it must be hard with dealing with the fact
that you have a terminal disease that is going
to kill you from doing what you have always done.
