Different Sunset Photo

I have always enjoyed taking pictures and lately have been taking pictures of the sun sets in my community. The other evening I went out and saw the sun setting through the trees and it looked very colorful. I knew that if I got in the car and drove to a place where I could get a clear shot it would be too late. I decided to see what kind of picture I could get form my driveway.
I am trying to take photos of sunsets that have something else beside just the sunset. It is my learning challenge.

What good thinking. Sunsets are beautiful, and many people make a reasonable recording of them and think they have a good photo. Your recognition that other elements are important to complete the scene shows a photographers' perspective.
Could I make a couple of respectful suggestions on this particular sunset? You say that you used your G9 (excellent camera!) on automatic; you will get better results is you override the automatic settings and expose for the part of the photo you want to feature. In this case, the colours of the sky and on your driveway. Instead, the camera has averaged the exposure and given too much importance to the trees.
In general, when the sky is visible, you should meter a sunset from a portion of sky beside the sun, where possible, excluding the sun from the area you are metering (it is so bright it influences the exposure too much). In this case, where the trees obscure the sky, the coloured portions of the drive are a good place to meter from.
You photo would also be more interesting if you were to move closer, or zoom in to crop out those blue seats and bits of fencing that distract from the real subject you are shooting...the sunset through the trees.

I do appreciate your comments and you make some very good points. One of the sub projects I am working on is an article on how to take sunset photos using the Auto mode. The article is aimed at the general population and I am developing a series on improving you photos using the simple to advanced point and shoot cameras.
When I took this photo I was on my way to take pictures for the newspaper and it would have been a better shot if I could have waited about 10 - 15 minutes as the sun set lower and the colors became more vibrant. That shot will be another day.
I would like to see some of your work posted here. I have found many great suggestions form people like you who are interested in Photography.

Rather than post more pics, I usually link to work already on-line: for instance, to my Dawn and Dusk gallery at http://davidrichphotography.org/Page13.html

That's a great shot bob. It's like the trees are forming a pinhole that the sun is glowing through. Sunsets are hard. I've shot a bunch of them, But very few really good ones. I prefer to go to the beach and shoot the sunRise. When I get up that early anyway.

COOL. I will read it tomorrow, I need to go to bed now. Do you have any tips for shooting the moon? Mine always come out as Blobs of light. I have a 70-210mm lens and a 2x converter on a Canon AE1 Program. Or a 110mm on a Mamiya 645 Pro.
I saw that oct14 is the "Hunters Moon" It is supposed to be bright orange at moonrise. Hopefully, I can get to the beach when it comes up.

I have one taken when I was on the plane. Small little red sun above the clouds. I'm no expert, but I love it.

I love how every sunset looks different! You get different colors every time! My favorites are the absolute breath-taking ones with such intense, vibrant colors!
Sunsets are always great for silhouette shots! Few things are as beautiful to look at as a perfect shape silhouetted against a colorful sky!
