This is pretty interesting: I have heard and read that some computer manufacturers are running some giant conspiracy. People claim that there are unmodifiable, hidden parts in a computer's hardware that purposely degrade the system's performance over time. The general scheme is to force buyers into upgrading after a period of time (presumably a few years), thus increasing profits.
Although I can't tell you that this is 100% true, you can't tell me that it is not true. Given, the slowdown present in older computers can easily be explained by other factors, but who's to say that there isn't some sort of crippling mechanism that enhances the degrading process?

Hello jhl. When we use Messenger and also when we use anti-virus software, the computer speed will be slow, so it is hard to make both ends meet unless you shut one of them. Also too many windows open is also part of the reasons for a slow speed. Have you noticed that, please?

Uninstalled Norton? OUCH
Norton is a big program but you could have just changed a few options
and had excellent virus protection. I trust Norton, totally.
Your PC will slow down if you use a browser that allows pop-ups all the time.
I'd use Opera or Firefox. Check and see which programs actually are running
when you start up and change those settings so only the ones you need are running.

I agree with RhythmWalker. Norton would be the last thing which I got rid of - even if I didn't like the brand. I have 360, and indeed it is quite a large program, but to remove it without an immediate replacement is asking for trouble if you're not very careful.

Viruses, worms, trojans are the common "enemies" of a fast pc... Also adding and deleting many programs and games can cause slowing down your pc... One more is how many programs you have running from the start up... so don't need to run useless programs on the start up... only antivirus antispyware and possibly a messenger or something is enough... running many programs uses more ram memory and when trying to run something else goes slower... And one final is you should keep your tower's inside clean and clean around every 2-3 months your processor's cooler... If a lot of dust gathers in the cooler's filter it won't cool your processor good and would make it slow down...

The computer might get slow down only because few simple things.
1. De-fragment the windows driver once in a month.
2. Do clean registry often to get rid of the registry entires of deleted files
3. clean the clogged files cleaning the temp folder of windows.
4. do not use more start up item.
these are few easy steps to speed up your computer.

The most is what is running in the background. So depending on what computer you buy, go to this site: http://www.blackviper.com/ and it will give you a list of what you can keep closed or open manually and what should be kept open. Another thing is that there is usually a bundle of programs they want you to try and if you get a Compac Presario, these re on the computer as well. You also should look at the task bar and close off any programs you are not using or those which you prefer to open yourself.
And make sure you have the firewall on and the anti virus. They will prevent spammers from putting bad trojans on your computer.

I notice you said that you uninstalled Norton. For all of the helpfull comments above, I think they will all agree that you should ensure that you do use a good security program of your choice. Don't make the mistake of leaving your PC exposed when it's online.

Malware, cookies, too many programs running, registry clutter. Get a registry cleaner like Registry Mechanic! Defrag regularly and scan for viruses regularly !
