hi mylotters am I the onlyone or do some of you really
hate the process of moving, the packing, and sorting, and
all that goes with it? I always get so stressed and then when it
is accomplished I am okay again. For one thing every time
so far when we have moved, we have not thrown out as muchstuff as we should have. this time in moving over six hundred miles away we havent the luxury of making several trips, its just one truck and one trip, maybe this will be easier as we will have to discard
a lot of stuff. let me know your take on moving.

I hate moving with a passion. Growing up, my dad built houses where we would live in the last one he finished (while it was listed with a realtor), while he was building the next one. We moved every year for 6 years. And we couldn't just leave stuff in boxes, because the house would have to look good for prospective buyers.
As an adult, there were more moves because of job opportunities. And being a big packrat, all moves were major stress events. My last move, from Massachusetts to Oklahoma - over 2000 miles, I finally smartened up and got rid of a lot of accumulated 'stuff'. I gave as much as possible to charity, softening the blow of separation a bit.
A few good things about moving though. You never have to do a major 'spring' cleaning. You get shiny, new appliances every year. Youhave a new location to explore, since there are interesting things to find no matter where you are.
Hope you're move goes smoothly & that you love your new home!

Good luck to you on your move! I went from a community of about 10k people to a city of over 100k. I love the community activities, galleries and other things to do, and am sure you will too. My best friend was my neighbor in Massachusetts, have known her for many many years. That's the hardest part of moving long distances, worse than the packing. I've kept my cell phone number from MA, so that she (and other friends) can call me without toll charges. We still talk all the time, somehow the distance seems less.

Having done a move in July (a whopping 2 or 3 miles!), I can say I know I didn't throw away nearly enough, although I threw out a lot! I still have stuff at my old house but there's no way for me to get it :( Oh well I'll just sell off the bulk of what I have left.

Moving is in the top 10 list of stressful events in life. I believe it might even be in the top 3. Even if it is a wanted move, it can be stressful. I moved from Michigan to California. It was very stressful, trying to decide what was critical to take with me and what could I do without. Then making sure that the place I was leaving was left in good shape. I still don't know how I did it. Are you staying in California? I know you are moving out of Orange County, but are you moving somewhere in Cali or out of state? The actual moving itself can be stressful. Will all of my things make it intact? Loading and unloading the truck, is stressful even if you have someone doing that for you. Good luck

I've moved several times in my life and it's very stressful. It's like an never-ending job and then, on top of that, you always feel disorganized.
One thing that helped me was when I learned some things to do.
I took all of my linens, blankets, towels, some clothes, etc., that I could live without, and used them to wraps up breakables like dishes, knick-knacks and other breakables. This way I killed two birds with one stone.
When packing plates in a box, I bought styrofoam plates to put in between. When I unpacked, it was all clean, and could then use those plates, too.
What ever room I was packing, I made sure on the box, on all sides, I put the name of the room, and on top, in a plastic sleeve, put a list of items that were packed in the box. I numbered the boxes, too, and kept a second copy of the list in a folder so when I needed to look for something I could see it was in dining room box #3.
Boxes that needed to be unpacked first, I put RED duct tape around it. That way I knew, when we moved in, those we absolutely needed them first. Things that we rarely used, like Christmas decorations, I blue tape on. Those could be stored until needed.
I also did not use such big boxes so it was easier to maneuver when moving things around. All boxes with breakables had it written all over everything.
We left the clothes in our drawers, so when the moving men came, they put the main part in the truck, then the drawers in the furniture. When we had them placed into the room the clothes were already in there. The ones in the closest were packed with the hangers in boxes we got from the moving place. It was great. We tossed the shoes in the bottom and all the clothes stayed hung up!
We tried, when we were moving to a place where we could make trips, to bring most of the stuff we could bring, on our own, and only hired the movers for the stuff that we would rather not do ourselves.
When we had to move long distance, we just let them do it all. It was worth the extra cost.
No matter how we did it, it was just very stressful and I did not kill myself to get everything unpacked. It was done a little at a time.
We did hold several yard sales beforehand and gave away what we did not sell to Goodwill or friends and family. It's amazing what you find you can discard when you don't want to move it all1 LOL

hi nangjanet I am sure marking all my boxes so I will know where everything goes. we have to make this all in one trip as the truck and the driver are being furnished free to us. before our moves were just a mile or two. this will be about 600 miles. wish we could afford a professional mover but we cannot so. it will be okay.

Hello my friend
My computer kicked me off last night and I was unable to get back till late
I though I was the only person that had this problem, go figure lol just the thought of it drains me, funny things is when ever we/I move I always seem to be the one doing all the work makes me sick, one time we were moving upstairs you would think that would be easy right? hmmm my sister spent more time running back and forth to the store while me and my mothers friend did all the work I am like how lazy can you be where in the heck is your concious so in my experience when you have lazy people that don't help it only makes moving more of a nightmare

I got to the point of where I hated to move also. I had moved about 16 times in three years when I was younger. I would like to move again some time but I really hate the thought of packing it all up and unpacking. We may stay right here LOL.

I have a nomadic life and am used to packing and unpacking. This has been going on for a year now. I have two homes to go back to. Presently I am staying in quite a remote place and my real home is some 2 hours drive from where I am now. I will go back to my other house once or twice a month. But I normally do not take so much of things with me except for some books. But my children will be packing a truck load of goodies each time we go back.

OH, Good LORD, I so hate moving! I've moved 7 times in the past 5 years, and I'm so sick of it! Some of those moves were to and from California from Texas - TWICE. Now we're moving again in January, and I'm already dreading it. We've already planned a garage sale for the first weekend in Nov. It always helps to clear some stuff out. The ONE good thing about moving though is that you have to go through all your stuff and clear out the things you no longer need. Clearing out the clutter is good for you on so many levels. I hope you make it ok. Hire lots of help - that will nopefully make it go smoother, although that's not guaranteed either.

hi moving is just the pits, the pa cking, the tossing out, we are moving six hundred miles up to northern california so must do this in one truckload. i think we need to prevail on some friends to help us sort and pack. we dont have any extra money so it will have to be through friends.

Moving 600 miles is a big move!
I have a 3-bedroom, 2-1/2 bath house with no second floor but it does have a basement and garage. For the past 2 years I've spent $50,000 fixing up the roof, foundations, not to mention painting. For the past 1-1/2 I 've been going through closets and drawers in an effort to throw out unessentials or old stuff. The trash men asked if we were moving! I am not really thinking of moving any time soon. But I am caretaker of my 94 y.o. father, who pays for the utilities. (I pay for food, and my husband pays for the car upkeep.) So when dad is buried, my husband and I might move to a condominium. Ihate the thought of having to move -too old (65 in 03/`09).
All I can say is don't knock yourself out - get a professional packer. Good luck with everything. When is this move, and will you return to MyLot?

Hi Hatley, moving terribly sucks. We just finished moving just a few days ago and I just finished getting our new place organized. It literally took me days to put up everything and throughly clean the house. It also took me days to pack up everything from the old place because I had a bunch of things I needed to throw away and I had to go through a bunch of boxes full of books, junk mail, and a lot more stuff that I can't name. Another thing I hate is transferring the electric, phone, internet, cable and whatever else I had to do that really sucked. I haven't really had any real sleep yet, but I'll live Hatley. Oh, I'm not complaining, it just sounds that way.

thanks miraclefreebies yep moving sucks but this time we are
tossing a lot of stuff so thats got to make it easier. our huge collection of books will be one of the main problems, we will have to sell a lot of them, just one truck and one move so it
all has to fit.

Well, I am with you one this I hate to move. It is a lot of work all at once. I have a bad back, it is very hard work. I get stressed too I have to admit it. I have moved to Tennessee from Ohio, then moved once while in Tennessee from one town to the other. And then back to Ohio again, then one more time to where we are not all with in like 12 months.. Yuck.. so I really do not like it at all.

Hi Hatley,
I don't experienced moving a lot..I remember during my college up to working time, I only moved 3 times and for me each move was exciting..LOL! It was always for the better, and I have my Sister who can help me and we also don't have a lot of stuff so, it wasn't hard for us!
But, I helped a friend before who have a lot of things and furniture and it was very very tiring really!

Hi Hatley, I've moved two countries and managed to give away, sell or get rid of most of what I owned (which was not much anyways lol) and just took one suitcase with a small box of personal items like albums and stuff and managed ok with that.
We will be moving apartments sometime next year, and I know it's going to be a HUGE job. With the things we have accumulated over the last two years, it's unbelievable and I know I'm going to hate it. I am not looking forward to it at all.

Hatley, I can so understand how you feel just now. I detest packing up for any occassion, even if it's only to go on holiday! I end up doing rather allot of big packs though, loading up my van to travel from one country to another and it is murderous. Each time, there is always something awkward shaped that will not fit into the space assigned for it and everything has to come back out again.
Then of course there is getting rid of all the stuff that is not going along. I have no problem with giving stuff away but I hate to just ditch stuff into the bin. I always end up at the last moment with piles of stuff which I think someone, somewhere could make use of. In these circumstances, FreeCycle is fabulous but the last couple of times I've packed up I've had no net access.
The last time I packed up to move it was from my other house to this rented one. I had a couple due to rent the old one from me and they really put time pressure on so we ended up just flinging things in boxes without really sorting them as well as we should have. Those dreadful people let me down at the last moment and the piles of boxes are now sitting here unpacked while I wait for the new house to be ready. Unfortunately I cannot find anything when I go searching for it, and everything could have stayed right where it was GRRRRRRRrrrrr!
Best of luck with your packing. It's a great opportunity to downshift your clutter if you have time to sort as you go along. You may discover some long forgotton treasures!

Oh yea, I HATE moving. And I've done it so often! By the time I was 4 years old we had moved 26 times mom said. My dad was a construction worker so we followed the work. We stayed put once I got into school. But, since leaving home as an adult 30 years ago I've moved 11 times. The last of which was the biggest move when I moved from the midwest to south Texas three years ago. And here I am, three years later, packing yet again to move BACK to the midwest. And it sucks. LOL I hope, really really hope, that this next move is my LAST.
