Are you afraid to have surgery?

If you had to have surgery because of an accident, injury, disease or other problem, would you be afraid? Would your apprehension depend on what it would affect? Are you someone who would ELECT to have surgery you don't NEED in order to look better? I don't think I would ever do it if there was another option. I'm not as worried about incidental things, like anesthesia or discomfort, I just don't like the idea of being cut, or scarring.

Hi mommyboo, There was a time, not many years ago when I thought that I would never have surgery. I had heard some people refer to it as "going under the knife", and it certainly didn't appeal to me. Then I took a gall bladder attack, and I was in so much pain that I couldn't wait to get to the hospital, and when they rushed me into surgery it couldn't be fast enough for me. I still wouldn't have surgery unless it was necessary, but I know now that sometimes we have no choice. Blessings

Emergencies are different than scheduled to me, even different than elective. In emergencies I fear that those involved don't take care to try and do things in a nice manner, which adds to scarring chances, infection, etc. I know this sounds bad but even in emergencies, I feel it is important for care providers to remember to be conscious of what the patient will think of the repair.

NOTHING works? Do you have chronic pain? I must be lucky because although I have received prescriptions for post-surgical pain relief, I have never needed to use much. 800 Motrins have seemed to work fine, both for after wisdom teeth and after having a baby lol. After an ankle injury and the car accident I think I did the same. I hope you have a discussion with your doctor about the failure of prescription pain pills, they have to do something about it.

i have fibromyalgia and i have tried 800 mg ibuprophren.. tylenol.. aleve.. morphine.. vicodin.. methadone.. ultram.. darvacet.. fentanyl.. flexeril.. valium.. (all at max dosage) and i cant even remember what else but its a mile long.. had 3 fibro docs and they all gave up (literally) so thats why im scared that if i have to have surgery it will be bad but oh well.. if its not fibro related i have a huge tolerance to pain so im hoping it wont be as bad as it is to some.. i know.. im crazy.. lol

well i had to c-sections. i was not at all scared just ready to see the faces of my children. although i am not having any more children, if i did have another one i would still have to get a c-section. and i would do it in a minute. I am learning to to allow fear to make my choices

It's not just fear for me. I am very interested in medical procedures to be honest. I just don't want scars because it's very hard to get rid of them. I'd rather prevent myself from being cut than try to the ends of the earth to get rid of a scar lol.

not really, sure its not my favourite thing to do but if it is neccesary, then i get it done. (i have had a few done on my nose because it is always stuffy) BUT, there is no way that i would get it done for cosmetic reasons - i have this aversion to pain!

I often wonder what is with someone who would just have plastic surgery after plastic surgery, but then again if I broke a tooth I would have it fixed immediately.

mommyboo hi I dislike having anesthia but the rest is not that bad as I have had to go through this three timse in my life. The last time was three years ago when I broke my shoulder, smashedit really, and had to have a steel and plastic shoulder joint replacement put in. I would not like to have cosmetic surgery at all. What I really dislike is being so sick I have to be hospitalized and kept on bed rest as I was with bleeding diverticulitis. I had diarrhea constantly so embarrassing, smelly, and sickening and I had to wear adult diaper.this experience I would not like to ever have to do over. I had to have numerous unpleasant tests, and had to have four blood transfusions. not a fun time for sure.

That sounds so awful . Did you have to have the tests to find out what was wrong or was it just as a result of the diverticulitis?

it was a result of the diverticulitis,a small blood vessel,,an artery had been broken open by debris caught in the small diverticuli that were in my colon. the doctor said it was probably from the blackberries I had eaten as the seeds got 'trapped in the little pouch then the blood vessel broke.onedoctor told me that blood in the colon causes severe 'diarrhea. so now I am very careful what I eat lol lol lol

if i needed to have surgery to save my life, then yes, i would have it. i've already had two c-sections, had my tubes cut and topped it all off, recently, with a full hysterectomy. when someone tells me that i could look better if i had some plastic surgery, i tell them that i have earned my right to look the way that i do. i only have to impress my husband and he likes me just the way that i am. as technology gets better, being cut open and scarring is becoming more and more obsolete.

The answer for your main question - Yes. I do afraid of surgery. I remember that I had gone through an operation to remove a lump few years ago. What I afraid is that I won't wake up to meet my family, friends, my loved one and my lovely dog, Ocean. I know it seldom happen but there's always a risk in any surgery. I won't consider to perform any plastic surgery on any part of my body if not required. You will look good if you are confident on yourself - better spend more time in building confidence rather than taking a risk in such surgery.

I suppose I am more worried that OTHER PEOPLE won't wake up after surgery and more worried that *I* would have adverse effects afterwards - bad scarring, surgery not working the way it was intended... etc. To be honest the anesthesia part doesn't really scare me. I do not like the thought of needles near my back though so I wouldn't want an epidural unless it was a decision between an epidural or general (being completely out).

LOL! Well, I've never been worried about that, I had impacted wisdom teeth and had sedation for that so I was not awake. The cool thing about oral surgery is that there is no scarring because it's not on your skin. I do like to eat though so it is kind of lousy to not be able to eat normally for a couple days.

I guess I am and consider myself lucky I never was told I have to have it. Once, years ago, I had a cyst removed while under local anesthetic and that was nothing and I also had two wisdom teeth removed under locals as well and that was an experience that will take a whole story to tell. Thank God for my lack of sicknesses although I've had others that were quite bad.

Oh I know! I am grateful that I am a healthy person because if I wasn't? Oh man, all hell would break loose. Some people are excellent patients. When I'm sick and people won't leave me alone or have to monitor me or something, I am horrible.

Three years ago I had to have surgery to remove a big black naevus on my back neck. I was afraid before starting but I felt nothing after injection of anesthesia. However i am still afraid of that even looking at others having surgery.

It isn't quite so bad if you're awake and have a local and it's not likely to scar. I also figured after seeing my doctor when I thought about having a mole removed that it was a better idea to get rid of it instead of thinking it was no big deal and have it develop into skin cancer.

I wouldn't say that I'm afraid necessarily! Those professionals that carry out these surgical procedures, they amaze me with their wonderous works! I have never had an operation in my life and I'm thinking to myself, I hope I don't end up on the operating table! If you think hard about surgery though, then I guess it is a frightening prospect, knowing that someone is cutting into you and you are unconcious for the duration of the surgery. I look at those hospital dramas like casualty and I think, yes, it definitely is quite a scary environment! Sometimes though, surgery is compulsory in order to sustain your life. I'm trying to remain as healthy has I can so that I don't end up in the operating theater! Andrew

Technology is amazing, yes but like I told someone else, I'd rather admire it from afar. In an emergency, YES I am glad for all the expertise and ERs and paramedics. Without having a team to respond a lot more of us would die from ordinary health concerns, ordinary accidents.

Nope i've had a broken leg with 4 titanium screws and a titanium plate in my ankle. I've had 28 stiches down my upper lip. I've had 20 stiches in my left arm. Even have had a broken nose so i'm not scared of surgery anymore at all. The only part i hate is when you come out of anestia and feel sick to your stomach for a few hours afterwords.

Are you into extreme sports? LOL. I don't know very many people who don't do anything risky who end up full of screws and plates and that many stitches. I've had anesthesia before but it never made me sick - not general but IV.

I just had emergency surgery last month (hysterectomy), I was terrified the whole two weeks before they could fit me in. I had nightmares about dying on the table and started having painck attacks. I came out of the situation just fine as you could tell, but it is scary no matter how advanced medicine has come. I do not think I would ever have an elective surgery though, it just is not worth the pain and healing I am going through. If I was meant to look another way I would and I do not think I need to look any other way.

I think I would be terrified too.... I hope I never need to do that. Even though I'm sure someday I'll be too old to have kids, I don't want to give up my uterus either lol. I think a lot of it is fear of the unknown, and every surgery is an 'unknown', they can't tell you for sure if what they intend to accomplish will happen.

I am more afraid of anesthesia rather than the surgery itself. I am afraid that I will not be able to wake up from the aneasthisa. I am more afraid of the pain after the surgery its done than in the surgery itself. I do trust the surgeon who is in charge of the operation, otherwise I would not give my consent to be operated.

I am scared of surgery for good reason. I went in the hospital once because I had difficulty getting pregnant and I signed a form that they could do anything necessary to save my life, alleviate my suffering, well they figured that alleviating my suffering meant the suffering of worrying if I was pregnant and secretly wishing I was not and that was not that case. So they made sure that my chances went from one in a million to only God can create the miracle. NOw I have to go to get a Mammeogram and I am terrified that instead of going and getting radiation or chemo or going on a remove cancer diet, I will wake up and look as flat as a pancake. Yes and how am I going to get a good dress that looks nice for my son's wedding next year?

So you went to the hospital for infertility treatments or tests and the result was the opposite?! I am trying to understand what happened here. I do not 'just sign' any form, if there's something I don't like in the wording, I will indicate that I do not agree with it and that they are NOT allowed to include that 'section' in treating me. BTW, getting a mammogram does not mean you will wake up flat as a pancake. It is a screening or a scan and nobody can remove any body part without your consent - at least that is what I believe about scans thus far.

I wouldn't be afraid, I would be terrified! Other than getting my wisdom teeth removed, I've never had surgery done. And I hope I never have to have surgery. It scares me terribly and I hate the thought of being 'under the knife'. Not just because of the pain or the discomfort, but because of the possibility of dying. Now that scares me!

Hi Mom No I don't think I would have elective surgery just to look better - but then I am lucky and I don't have any serious things that I would really give anything to improve. The only thing I would love to get rid of is my 'baby tummy' but still don't think I would ever have surgery to get rid of it - rather I should wear it as a badge? lol I had my first baby naturally so had no problems regarding surgery there. But then my twins came along and the doc told me that since I had already had one naturally, I would be having numbers 2 and 3 naturally too! Well, that did worry me some - one baby I could deal with, 2? Hmmm, a different story that! Anyway, in the end I spent the weeks between 30 and 35 in hospital with a condition which wasn't a problem for me, but was very worrying for my babies and we could have lost them at anytime. I was under constant monitoring and blood tests every 2 days, etc - great fun for everyone. I had plenty of time then to contemplate the benefits of C-section vs natural birth. I wanted a C-section, although was terrified of the whole idea, but I knew that it would be best for my babies - considering that they would be early and would probably need incubators, etc, surely it was best to get them out quickly rather than wait and let them suffer and battle when they were still so tiny. In the end, at 35 weeks they induced me, not once, not twice but 3 times!!! No joy so I demanded they let me sleep and get the surgeon to come and visit in the morning - they did it! I was still terrified and didn't know what was happening, but my hubby was with me and the staff at the hospital were all great and in the end I am glad that we went ahead and did the C-section. My babies had a week or so where it was a bit rough, but 3 years later they are both thriving and no worse for it all. The scarring is minimal and I am lucky in that my surgeon was really good and cut really low and neatly. The only signs I have of surgery is the 'bump' (ladies I am sure you know what I mean). Thanks Violetdreams

LOL! I have to tell you, even if you get back in shape and are thin to begin with, babies ALWAYS leave what I lovingly refer to as their 'rental deposit'. Granted the one my daughter left is fairly small but it is still THERE. I guess I should be happy since there is no way someone who is 34 and has had kids will look like someone who is 18 and has had no kids but a chick can still hope! Your doctor sounds fairly progressive, many doctors will just automatically tell a mom of expected multiples that a c-section is a certainty. Many times it has to do with one or both of the twins (or triplets) not presenting head down, or it is expected they will try to come really early and then getting them out and cared for within minutes is important. My daughter was 7.4, pretty average but I am small and if I were to have twins, I bet they wouldn't get much larger than 4 lbs each, there is not enough room for two babies. I am surprised they kept trying to induce you, most of the time twins cause spontaneous early labor!

I have had surgery before and I was terrified! I don't like being asleep while someone is cutting me. I don't like being put to sleep either. I don't even like hospitals. If I had to have a surgery again, I would see if there was a way around it but if it needed to be done, then I guess I would'nt have a choice. I wait to the last minute to go to the hospital if I need to and I would never elect to have surgery to make myself look better. I'm to chicken. Besides that, God gave me this body and I won't have surgery to change it for something I don't NEED to have done to make me look better.

I don't like hospitals much either. I have no trouble visiting other people in them but I am a terrible patient. I prefer to be left alone, I don't like people touching me, etc. I had even trying to get the ball rolling on switching to a birth center but my daughter had other ideas - I went into labor in the middle of the night and ended up going to the hosp anyway. She was born by afternoon and my birth center appointment was at 6 that evening so my husband could come lol. Needless to say we never did go to the birth center. I called and said she wasn't willing to wait. I researched a lot and didn't intend to go to the hosp until absolutely necessary either, that would mean a shorter time I had to be there before she was born. I would hope if I ever do need to have some type of surgery that it can be in the office or something at a center so I do not have to be admitted and stay at the hospital. I can say that my hospital had excellent food - and they fed my husband, so I can't complain after I hear about how awful some people's experiences are!
