Since so many of us older people are living much longer, and
healthier is there any reason why we aged could not work part
'time or build up a small business instead of vegging out
on retirement? Must retirement mean we are no longer of any'value in the work force? What is your take on these questions mylotters?

Anybody who has useful skills should be able to find some way to keep using them. I'm not really retired, since I didn't work, but I'm in the process of building up several streams of income from writing. I'm not a business type, and what I do best is write, so that's the skill I'm using.
I'm a bit curious about you're needing a job. I looked at your profile and saw that you've been on Mylot for only eight months. In that time you've gotten the highest number of points I've seen here. So I have to wonder whether you've been spending time on mylot that could have been better spent developing a real source of income. Of course I don't know if you have referrals that you're making money from, but if you're making a lot of money here, why do you need a job?
I also notice that you don't have a star, which is very unusual.

What??? Hatley has a star! It's a yellow 8. It'd be a 10 if she wasn't such a feisty lady and keeps the trolls stirred up.

Sorry about that. LOL Indeed you do have a star. I forgot that when you're on a page where you're responding the star doesn't show. I'm on Social Security also, and luckily have enough to live on. I don't know how long that's going to be true though. I'm very frugal, but my cost of living has jumped lately, even more than just for food, so I know what you must be going through. I can't hold a job either, so it's pick up a bit here and there on the internet.

well I had a star just awhile ago so must check. no I have no referrals and I have only a small scocial security check.I do make abut thirty to forty dollars here a lot of the time plus twenty dollars every month from mysurvey. It is not so much need as want altho I do need some more income. I am handicapped physically and 81 so theres not so much I can do but we all have a right to do something that makes us feel needed. My star had an 8 so why should it be missing?

It seems odd to me that so many retirees want to work after having worked for so many years already. While the retirement pay is not the best, and it is good to stay active after retiring, I wish I could simply vegetate in front of the computer and play games all day. OH, wait, I do that already! I miss the interaction between myself and my crew from work and I certainly miss the paycheck, but I sure do not miss work.

I hear ya, doodler, I truly do I thought I was going to retire in my sixties, but my job ruined my body and I retired in my early fifties at a lot less money than I should have gotten. Hell, I can't even get my SS yet, so I am scraping by on what little I get and what little Shelly gets. It's not fun, I know that much

My husband and I have worked so hard for years. He also served 17 years in the United States Army. I would love to see him retire some day. We both work seven days a week right now. We will still work part-time if we have our health though.

Just from this conversation I see that you write very well. Have you tried any of the writing sites, or that not something you'd want to do as a more regular thing?

As long as the person is healthy, can do the job and enjoy it then there should not be a problem. As an employer I would hire a retired person if they were qualified to do the job. For many of the older workers it is indeed the fact that they are not just vegging out and still a productive member of the workforce that keeps them well and vibrant.
But sometimes depending on how old the person is it can be taxing on them in more ways than the job. Sometimes even though they are able to do some jobs, I find that many don't drive which means that someone has to take and pick them up or they end up spending the part time wages in taxi fare. For some in order to keep other benefits they can only earn a certain amount which in the end might not be worth the hassle.
I really wish that it was optional for all people once you have made it to retirement. But my heart goes out to those that NEED to work late in life just to survive. If you are able and can, then I say go for it.

I do think you are of value and should be able to work. I am getting up on towards retirement myself and this is a question that I ,too, am concerned about. Financially, I don't think I could live off my retirement and beyond that, I enjoy working. I would love to cut back and work less but I still would like to work. I think it is a matter of finding the right employer. I work with a woman that is now 85 and still has it going on. She is a very good worker and way younger than her years. I think that if a person is willing to work and is able to do the job then age should not matter at all. While many employers would deny an older person work, there are as many that would not. So in answer to your question, I think that it does not mean that you have no value in the work force. Rather, I think it means or it should mean, that you have the right to choose whether or not you choose to be in it. You have earned the right to kick back and enjoy your life.

I understand. Sorry I couldn't be of much help. I don't know of any good sights for earning money...this is the best i've found. I know you write and so do I but most that I've found have very long payouts. I hope someone here has some good suggestions for you, hatley.

Interesting question and if you want to work you could try and get a job. Here in Australia we have a real skill shortage and they are asking people to postpone their retirement and for some to come back from retirement. Some people have tried it but there are a few problems.
First of all we are slower and modern day employers seem to want their workers to be like demi gods but they don't pay them as though they are. lol. They want people who can multi task loads of things simultaneously, and have the speed to do everything yesterday or before they asked you to do it or at least almost instantaneously. Basically they seem to want their staff to be able to do multiple jobs at the speed of a computer and people cannot do this and if they try they get tired and stressed. Oh and they want them to work 24/7 and not have a social life or family.
Secondly the longer we are out of the work force the more convinced employers are that you are incapable of working. They seem to think it is a skill you forget. What they really want are robots who can think and if they ever manage to build them we will all be out of a job. But if they did that then there would be no one earning so there would be no money in the economy which would crash. hmmm tough one.
But they definitely do not want old people who have lost their speed and have been out of paid work for a while. I cannot work at the moment because I am ill and I am not sure when or if I will recover. Before that happened I was looking for a new job. I was 50 with a good 10 years experience at high level and a university degree but no one was interested. They all said they were short of staff but they really wanted fast young ones. I could not believe that despite being desperate for workers I could not get a job. I was not that old and had a good work history. Then I discovered that they were sourcing most of their workers from the nearby big city. There are lots of people who would love to live up here in the mountains and so they can afford to ignore the older ones and find young ones else where.
I do not know what it is like where you are but the world is definitely ageist! They seem to think that once you hit 50 you are not good for anything except the scrap heap.

hi yes its true here too. much ageism. thats what caused my mangager to fire me, she was hung up on the fact that I was almost80. she kept saying how much she hated to let me go as I was her best worker blah blah blah. but there was an ulterior motive, she was forced by the second in command to let me go as the second said fire her or I quit. funny thing is shortly after i left, the manager was fired for indiscriminately firing me, and aslso the second in command but by that time I had fallen , broke my shoulder, had major surgery and could not use my left arm anymore. so that awas that.

I agree with you...I think that our retired people are of great value to our community and have every right to build up a business or work part time! If they prefer to not work that is fine but if they want to then they should not be stopped & more people should see their value as employees!

Retire, veg out, die! Retirement isn't for vegging out. Retirement was supposed to be for working when you want to. (didn't happen for me, but that's another story). If you're mind is still sharp and you can physically get around there's no reason not to work. During the years that I worked as a temp because I couldn't find a permanent job you'd be surprised how many other temps that I worked with that were well into their 70's. They were definitely an asset because of their experience.

My husband retired from his one job and now has another one. I retired from my business and have a part time job. My sister retired from hers and has a new career. My brother-in-law retired and has another job. My mom, age 80, still works part time, my cousin retired from his business, went back to school for his Masters in Education and is teaching.
That's my take!! LOL

You are very welcome. The other option, too, is volunteer work. I have friends who have enough money from retirement so they use their time to do volunteer works.
Older people have more experience and are usually very responsible. I loved hiring older people when I had my business, more than younger. They were my best workers!!My husband's boss told him that he can never leave as he is the best employee that they ever had. He has a good work ethic as he worked for the same company since he graduated high school until he retired.

yes dear hatley you can very well work with all the experience behind you.
and the contacts you have!!
well i may suggest instead of going for a job which will require regular attendance and perhaps fixed hours , better go for some thing which does not involve regular visit to the office, no boss and flexible working hours , like multi level marketing ,which leverages time spent by you and your team and pays you accordingly !!
wish you good luck!!

i think retirement doesnt mean people dont have value.
people who got retire can still dedicated their life to help somebody
for example, in my country, there was a retiree who kept taking seeds of pine wherever he goes everyday
when he passed away 10 years later, he inherited more than 10 kilometers of pine forest for person around his home

why do the people who already retired need a job,i'm a young girl, in my places i want to expect the day i can be stop working come ture quickly. as i want to have a good rest not only a holiday, we almost spend more than five day to do working, and two day for the family working, when the monday coming,i always do not want to get up,our body fell very tired as the times go by, have a good rest and take care of your grandson or doing which is you interest or you wanted to do before, is that not good? i do not really know this sensent means:"Must retirement mean we are no longer of any'value in the work force?",when you retired, you also want to built a new record in you working force in order to get the value, or you means after you retired, you value which you set up during your working career no longer here? i though that when somebody retired, everything can be put down.you can not set up a new record, but your experience can be give the young people some help to build, this is also a value of working area.take care, good luck and have a nice day!

haiershen we live longer now, we often do not have enough money so we do need part time work, and yes we want to feel that we still matter, that we are not just old throw aways, wait until you retire you will soon miss your job and the feeling that work gave you, you do not understand now but you will when you get to my age

I don't agree that people who are retired should be sitting pretty. There are online jobs are working from home or lighter jobs which our elderly are capable of doing at a reduced hours. If their financial situation is acceptable they can involve themselves in community work. I believe that pensioners can still provide a contribution to society with their life experience.

Hi Hatley...
People who are older have more experience and should be given the chance to work (that is if they want to still work of course.) I think that people should be given equal chance. If they're still able to perform the job well then I don't see why they shouldn't be able to work.
It's a great idea to actually start a business if the idea of working under someone else no longer appeals to you. I'm working and I've started my own small business so that when the time comes that I do have to stop working, I can still feel that I'm useful.

I think everyone has value, regardless of age,
old or young.
And, even people who don't work have value.
Everyone has a job, even if it's not paid.
Like moms, we're not paid, but we work hard!
I was working at a very young age.
I'm not working in a traditional sense now,
except writing and affiliate programs that
I do from home, plus Mylot.
Plus, my mom job!
But that has it's own compensation!

Hi Hatley: I retired a year ago with the option of taking retirement payments immediately or leaving the IRA in place. I opted to leave the IRA in place and live off my savings. With the current market trends my IRA has shrunk to the point that I have to return to the work force. I am not happy about that. I really would hate to return to corporate america. I'm not sure what job I would be good at other than what I learned in the 30 years in the corporate world. Any ideas?
