Could you live without electricity?

Hundreds of years ago, people used to live without electricity.
Having electricity is really a convenience. We can do a lot of things with it. But, do you think we can still live without electricity? What if suddenly, there'll be no electricity. I think it would be difficult and boring without electricity, but can live without it as long as we have water, food, shelter, heat and clothing.
Have a nice day!

I lost electricity once for four days because of a hurricane. I actually did alright! I used a gas and a charcoal grill to do my cooking, kept foods cold in a cooler with ice (of course, ice was bought from a store with electricity), and worked on my crafts and read books during the day. I hand-washed laundry and hung it outside to dry. I learned all kinds of ways to get around having no electricity.
We are so spoiled with the things we have now. I remember growing up with no air conditioning but there's no way I'd want to live without it now!
After that hurricane, I started doing research into more ways to get around electricity, in case it ever happened again. Once the price of electricity began to skyrocket, I started thinking about it more seriously.
I started buying solar panels and now run my office mainly off of solar energy! I use them to recharge batteries of most of my electronic toys. At Christmastime, I decorate outside using solar Christmas lights.
I'm waiting now because there's a company (I can't remember the name) that is working on solar 'panels' that you can print out with a printer! They're going to be much, much cheaper than the solar panels on the market today. When they go public with them, I'm going to scoop up a bunch of them and run my entire home from them, well, with electricity for backup.
Some places actually PAY you for your excess solar power! We don't live in a State that does that, yet, but I'm hoping that they join in soon.
Yeah, I think I could live without electricity... just keep those solar panels coming! LOL

Hello mentalward. I'm glad you responded to this discussion.
Sunlight is perpetual. Having solar energy is the one thing that I want to have, in case electricity becomes so expensive because of high cost of fossil fuels, but solar panels are still so expensive here. I wish there will come a time that it'll be available and cheaper. It's great that you have it! I know some places here in our country that rely on solar power. It's renewable and less a disadvantage than using fossil fuels for electricity. Thank you again.
Have a nice day!

We had the power go out a couple weeks ago for about 2 hours. My son and I were at the house. He could not handle it. The good thing was that he pulled out games and we played a few games. That only lasted a little while till he said "I'm bored" (a hundred times). I sometimes find it nice if it happens during the day, I read or clean. I could not live without water. I have a pump that is run by electricity, so when the power goes so does the water.

Oh yes. It is quite possible to live without electricity.
In the army we would go on patrol and be without electricity for weeks and when you sail in my old boat, built in 1870, it has no electricity and I go off sailing for days on end.
Ok, I'm happy to use electricity when I have it but I can certainly live without it.

There are a lot of the more advantaged people that would not know what to do if they could not even open a can without an electric can opener!
We have had a few times when we couldn't pay our electric bill and we did ok, but for our food storage.
I have a fireplace in my home and I would cut it down to just a couple of rooms to keep warm. We would make a cooking pit outside to cook food on also. Now for water, I have well water and I would have to get a hand pump to get the water. Now, for keeping my food, I would have to learn how to store it all and preserve with salt for my meat. I would also have my boys dig a deep storage place to store veggies in and my youngest son would go and shoot a deer and maybe some small game.

I had to live without electricity for two weeks after a hurricane. And I can tell you that it was very bad. The heat was oppressive, it was impossible to sleep. Very little breeze at night, but then, if you left your windows open, the racket from all the neighbors' generators running was so loud that you could not have possibly slept. Plus, no ice. That just made the heat more unbearable.
Forget about TV, computers, stereos, etc., think about cool drinks of water and a hot meal. You're not going to be having those without electricity. Of course, people living in freezing cold environments would be freezing cold without any power to provide heat.
I hope I never have to go without power again.

If you think you can't live without electricity then I suggest you start seriously working on that. If we actually have half the terrorist problem we are being told it is just a matter of time until they get around to taking our electricity out over large areas.
It wasn't hundreds of years ago that people lived without electricity. I'm 69 and I didn't live in a house that had electricity until I was about 14. We made it just fine but we were set up to live without it. Now people are not set up to live without electricity. Our houses and designed to be heated and cooled with CH/A and would be just about unlivable without it.
There is something else you must think about. If our electricity goes down over a large area the food supply and fresh water will shut down. Food wouldn't be able to get to your local super market. With no electricity to pump the diesel fuel to run the trucks our food supply would last less than a week. Trying to live in our homes without electricity would be our least problem. This is what I would call putting all our eggs in one basket and that basket has a big hole in the bottom of it.

Sure I can live with it personally, as long as you're going to allow me and my family of 5 stay with you for how ever long~ LOL! We have our own computers so we wouldn't have to trouble your system any. My wife is a great cook. My 3 kids are well behaved. Although we're still potty training the youngest one who is 2. Relatively, they are usually quiet, unlike some kids I've seen in action. They definitely don't act any of the kids on the TV show "the Nanny."
Any way, we will be able to continue responding to all of your discussions on mylot, and you can leave us postit notes whenever you've added a new discussions right on our monitor.
Pretty cool idea eh? What do you say?

According to my view, its not at all possible in this era, because people are habitat with this.If this situation is in 15 or 16 th century then might be its possible, but now its not at all possible. For an instance, if in Mumbai(India) which is financial capital of India. In this city,if power has gone even for an hour then each and every elecricity trains are stop and this impacts to the business in crores.By this revenue generation in govt is also reduced. So, In this era living without electricity is not at all possible(except in the case of village).

Yes, easily and often! In the winter we lose power quite often due to snow and ice and in the summer we spend our vacation and some weekends camping in the green mountain national forest. I actually enjoy being without the tv and our kids grew up with it so they are used to it and when the power goes out they pull out games, cards or books. I usually stress about the stuff in the freezer and if it goes on too long we pull out the coolers and bury everything in the snowbanks. Fortunately we have a gravity fed water system so we never worry about water, and use propane for cooking and bought new stove without the electronic starter so with a match I can light the oven and get heat.

Now that you post this question, I realised that I can't live!! I definitely can't live without electricity!! Sure I can endure 2 hours or 1 day wihout electricity but not for eternity. That means we're back to primitive era. Just imagine, almost everything around us is powered either directly or indirectly by electicity. Even clothes now are manufactured my machines. No electricity means no light (thats the most important to me!!), air conditioner (for tropical countries), heater (for cold countries), no internet, basically no nothing!! Its so miserable. I think the world has relied too much on electricity that most of us (I think) cannot live without it anymore

I think that is so amazing how they use to live. My family and I went to Tenneesse and looked at the houses and different ways people use to live. i think its amazing and very informative. I wouldn't be able to live without it. Its gets way to hot here and once we didn't have our A/C b/c it was broken and I had to take the kids somewhere just to cool them off so they could take a nap. Their little cheeks were bright red.

We can live without electricity why not. But nowadays that would be difficult, we are very dependent on electricity. But as you said as long as we have food, water and the others it would be fine.
