Obama, it's "The American Dream", not "The American Promise"!!!

It bugs me to no end every time I hear or read Barack Obama changing the tradition from "The American Dream" to "The American Promise". What's the difference? Dreams require action by the dreamer, promises require action from everyone else. Yes, the American Dream does include things like owning a home, travelling, employment we can enjoy, education, owning a business and the freedom to go after them. But Obama's campaign doesn't challenge Americans to go after their dream, he wants us to believe that dreams aren't good enough. We somehow "deserve" promises. Guess what Obama and Obamabots, no one deserves the promise of a home or anything else they dream of. We are going through a loan and credit fiasco because of the very BS Obama calls "The American Promise". If you want something, you get off your butt (or on your butt if you get a desk job) and earn it! You give up immediate whims to save for it. Whether it's about money or not, you come up with a plan of action... and implement it. Obama's "American Promise" is nothing but pie in the sky lies to pique the interest of those who demand something they want, but aren't willing to go after. Guess what America... You Don't Deserve Any Promises! You Don't Automatically Get Anything Simply Because You Were Born! So Quit Acting Like The World, The Government, Or Anyone Else Owes You Anything! If you are supporting Obama, McCain (or anyone else) because of what they promise you in the way of monetary gain, you are just as easily bought as the "fatcats" you claim to despise.

ParaTed, Great post! It is exactly this kind of idealism that has this country on the brink of it's second depression! Government and all that goes with it was never, ever intended to be a "santa claus"! One of the main reasons our forefathers left England (if I remember my history right) was they wanted to get as far away from government involvement in things that should be personal choices instead of mandates!

Kind of "history repeating itself" isn't it. The "Great Depression" would have just been another "so so" depression if the government hadn't of stepped in and made it catastrophic. Let's hope they don't do it again.

So true, rodney! Our country is in a huge mess! We are going down fast and I believe it is time to go back to the basics. There are way too many greedy people out there that only think of themselves and how much money they can get. There are way too many people out there who are trying to redefine marriage and want to kill the unborn. We have gone away from God and as long as we do that, things will continue to get worse! God bless.

I think he means that in this country it been harder and harder to get ahead. The american dream is no longer a reality. There are a lot of people working there fingers to the bone and still come up short. I believe that a lot of people try but when you are really impoverished it's almost impossible to get ahead. Obama believes in certain forms of socialism like socialized health care. I see this as a possitive for this country considering that most americans don't have healthcare. If your poor and need to see the doctor you don't because you can't afford to. One medical bill and you don't eat for several months. Sorry but people need to be helped before they can build a life for themselves.

There have always been people working their fingers to the bone, some fall short, some succeed, some die before they get to realize their dreams. That doesn't mean their dreams weren't worth working for, it just meant that something got in the way. BS, many people have been "impoverished" but aren't today. A lot of people have been filthy rich are flat broke. In my own life I've been lower class, lower middle class and middle class. People who I grew up with in a middle class neighborhood are everything from stuck in the ghetto to multimillionaires. There is nothing wrong with a safety net, but that isn't good enough for Obama's "promises", safety nets are uncomforable and imply a fall of some kind. He wants to replace the safety net with a hammock. Hammocks are great for laying in on a sunny day during a break or basking in the glow of accomplishment for a bit, but when lying politicians bases their campaigns on hammocks in the sun as a lifestyle, then we should shout them down instead of praise them. It is the American Dream, no promises, no guarentees, only the freedom to make a goal, make plans towards it, and be ready to adjust your plan as contingencies arise. If you aren't willing to do that, you deserve only one thing... Failure. Failure should't be rewarded, it should be pittied. When we need help from the taxpayers, it should be uncomforable, inconvenient and just enough to get us by. If not, then we are thieves, robbing people of their dignity and their drive to go after what their dream.

I'm not talking about welfare programs, I'm talking about socialism. We all benefit from socialism, our current school systems are based upon it. Also I see that you are 45, you had more choices over the years, I'm 24 and inflation started after I turned 18 and I started out on the bottom rung in a very poor area where our jobs where going over seas. I've never had the oppertunity to get ahead as of yet. It has been impossible for me to get even a little ahead. I just want my wages and expenses to even out a little.

Socialism and Communism cannot exist in a free society. If you resent freedom, we have nothing more to talk about.

So true! I think it may be a nefarious conspiracy to get all dependent on the government.. so all will vote for said party that goes for that! Well, here's the news flash. If all are supported by government, soon enough the support will run dry, cause why should any of us bust our butt working if the government owes it to us!? so there will go all the productivity, thus taxes and tax payers.. and all will be receiving.. but with no taxpayers and productivity/capitalism, they will receive what?

People should be able to eat. They need medical care. You shouldnt need 3 jobs to support your family. The elderly should not be hungry becausee their medicine is too costly.Break the backs of the working man and you sacrifice this nation. The fat cats dont do without and so many of these issues arent that big of deal to them.People cant afford to feed their families or seek medical care, malnutriton causes illness and disease. We are tax payers and where are our rights? It looks like a plan to eliminate the middle class. What are the detailed plans that Obama has about this?People need the prices to come down in the grocery stores. Wages are near what the cost of living is. That is a joke! There has been no capping on what they charge. Some children eat at school or they dont eat at all.Dark days in the land of the plenty, thanks to crooked politicians and greedy fat cats! They have sent our companies to other countrys and taken away jobs for our people. You cant even buy an American made tv anymore. They are going to keep this up and there wont be any money for their own paychecks.

Yep, he believes it's the responsibility of the government to keep us all happy. And he also believes the government should enforce that happiness -- no choices. McCain barely touched on that tonight in the debates, saying that under Obama's health care plan, a small business that can't afford health insurance for its employees will be FINED, and parents who don't provide insurance for their child will be FINED Expecting Obama to deny it, I was shocked to hear him say, YES, parents SHOULD be required to get insurances for their children, because it is relatively inexpensive to insure a child, and blah blah. I think children need to be cared for properly. And most parents DO THAT VERY WELL ON THEIR OWN. When you try to legislate to make the few who don't care for their kids well do so, you only end up hurting the rest of the parents and their kids. This is how we get all these crazy things that no one understands, where Human Services can burst in and take your child, where parents have to have a doctor's note every time their kid misses one day of school, where they tell us how to parent our children, and will take them from us if we don't comply. This is what the Republicans are talking about when they not very clearly say "big government". They mean a government that takes upon itself to legislate our lives. We are guaranteed "life, LIBERTY, and the PURSUIT of happiness". What makes me happy may not make you happy. I'm too tired tonight to spell this out clearly. But no American should want this kind of life that Obama and the liberals want to push on us. They are not being fully honest about how much control they will end up having over our lives.

he reminds me of Freddie from the Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors... "You are all my children now" The scarier thing is, his Obamabots agree.

The american promise. Wow, sounds like a possible misinterpretation could flood our country with even more illegal citizens looking for a free american dream. Wow, let the easily amused reply here, "to see if cow farts are hurting the environment", I don't care who you are, that is funny.
