Are you ready if you have a major power outage this winter?

Last winter we had a huge power outage at our home. It was freezing cold outside and we had a huge storm that downed power lines. We had no heat, light, or power for about 18 hours. Our home got down to a chilly 45 degrees. We have plenty of food stored for emergencys but we did not have any heat source or way to cook our food. It was a huge eye opener. Are you ready for a winter outage?

We've shovels and lighters, we can always dig a pit to cook our food in if we gotta. Hopefully I'll be able to get a small grill and some flints, as well, to make sure that when that's not an option, we can still cook. As for keeping warm, we've lots of blankets and in such instanes we usually sleep with our cats and dog.

Our ground freezes solid here but I guess we could make a fire on top of te snow pack as long as we can keep it going. I am trying to make our old scraps into a few extra blankets so that we are atleast doing something. I feel like there is so much to do to prepare and they all take a lot of money.

We have a fireplace, which is a nice asset in those cases. I remember years ago a series of ice storms knocking out the power for days at a time. It was frustrating. But, we had the fireplace to huddle around and used blankets to block off the doorway to that room, so more heat would stay there. We could cook over the fire (mom broke out the pots and pans for camping so we wouldn't ruin the good ones). We played games in the firelight and the family really bonded. It was actually kinda nice. My only issue was that I couldn't bring myself to sleep in the family room with everyone else. I went to my freezing bedroom under 4 blankets and slept there. That reminds me, I gotta pick up some firewood one of these days. Gotta be prepared, no?

My next house will have a fireplace and hopefully a wood stove as well. We are still in our starter home and with the economy we are stuck here for a while. When the power was out we had a great time. We froze but we played games and read a lot of stories. It was fun, we should do it more often and not wait for a power outage.

Our power outages are usualy shory but once in a while it is a big issue and we are cold for a while. It only happens about once a year.

Actually yes. I wouldn't like it but we could do it. Our house heating and our stove in the kitchen are gas and I have a large trunk full of various types of candles. And we stock pile battery's out of habit and have 3 portable radios and a weather radio/tv radio. I've done it before actually years ago when a bad winter storm knocked out our power and it took two weeks for them to repair the power to our house. We stuck it out in our house and stayed warm thanks for natural gas heating and candles .

I wonder if we could fix our heater. We have natural gas as well but we need power to turn it on. I dont miss the power as much but the gas I miss when we all get cold. Its weird how it is all effected.

Yes. There is a heater for when the power goes out, a converter to provide some power via the car batteries, a small stash of food, plenty of books and games, candles and flashlights.

our heater depends on the power to know if it needs to turn on or not so if the power goes out, which it does every winter, we go cold. We do have flashlights and candles though. We are trying to get ready.

Wouldn't matter here. It doesn't get that cold. When I lived in Maine though we lost power a couple of times in the winter, but not for very long. Hubby and I would cuddle together under just about every blanket we owned. lol

It gets very cold here for about 5 months out of the year and it is gearing up right now. We woke up to snow for the first time of the year on sunday. I am not ready for it.

We have installed a wood stove in the garage. We have bottled water, canned goods, propane for the gas grill, a propane heater. We have a roll a way bed, and could survive in the garage for a while. It would not be fun, but could be done.

We have been trying to find a spot for a wood stove in our home. We dont have anywhere to vent a wood stove so we figured we could not get one. I never thought of using the garage. It isnt as nice as having one vented in the home but it is a big difference from not having one at all. Thanks for the great idea and possibly saving my life and the life of my family.

Nope. I have some candles around the house and Hubb's lighter, so we'll have light. We have plenty of big heavy blankets, so we'll keep warm. But that's it. I need to get some jugs of water put away in the freezer, get some cans of food that can be eaten cold in nessessary and maybe look at a way to heat some food without using traditional power supplies. Other than that, we'll make it through. ~~IN SEARCH OF PEACE WITHIN~~ **AGAINST THE STORMS, I WILL STAND STRONG**

No, I am not. My husband and I want to buy a generator so that we won't be without power in case a power outage does occur. Even though we live in California, the low's can get into the 20's during the winter which is too cold for my liking. I just hope we can afford to get one before winter hits, so that we don't have to rely on our wood stove to keep our home warm.

I wish I had a wood stove. I was going to buy one but we have no where to vent it out of our house. We dont have any way to heat the house up if we need to. I want a little propane heater that we can use in the house to keep us warm, now we just need the money in the bank to get it.

Not at all! I have nothing ready for a power outage, except for flashlights with batteries and lots of candles around the house. We always have granola bars and cereal in the house so we wouldn't starve. I guess we would all pile on my king size bed and cover with lots of blankets. Body heat would be our form of heat.

Body heat was the only thing that kept us warm on the last outage. I am saving up to get a propane heater that we can use indoors. I think I would feel more secure if I knew I could at least do something.

Yes...I have oil lamps...and my kitchen stove is gas and though you are not supposed to use it to heat your house when you cook or bake it warms up the area. I would be able to make it okay. We had an ice storm that left us without electricity for four days and I stayed warm...ate lots of good food and played cards etc by the light of the lamp.

I dont have any oil lamps but I want some. I am looking for some decorative ones that I can display and use when I need them. We can get horrible winters here and we are trying to get ready for it again. Id like to learn more ways to keep warm. Thank you for your ideas.

Mostly. We have plenty of canned foods and a wood ring full of fire wood for a heat and cooking source. I do need to stock up on bottled water though. We have well water and if the power goes out then we have no running water to cook, bathe, or flush with.

We need a lot more water to. We are on city water and it was contaminated once. When I got to the store the cases of bottled water were gone. I had some at home but I didnt want to get into my emergency supply. We had to and it turned out okay, but we realised that it does not last as long as you think. Now we save pop bottles and fill them when we are done, basicaly we can use that water for cleaning up if we dont want to drink it and save the bottled water for drinking.

Well, May God protect you in your time of need, if needed. Stay safe to stay sane. I hope that if it does go out, you cherish the conversations between you and your loved ones. May a neighbor be your hand when needed!

I think that in most cases we will be safe but I do worry about the kids and how they might panic if things are not normal. I want to prepair now so that if something happens I can give them a life as normal as possible.

Absolutely happythoughts! We have a "prefab" house and it's rather large. We also have 6 gas powered generators to hook the electricity up. I mean, God Forbid the pump for the well stops working! We have a pantry full of food, that's ready to go, and on top of it we get the 5 gallon fill-ups of water on a regular basis. In the middle of the month we fill up 5 and put them back. We have plenty of batteries and I just got a bunch of candles, just in case. I also quilt so we have plenty of blankets to go around. I have been stockpiling for a while. We live on a highway and sometimes when it gets too bad out, we flag the truckers down and bring them in for a while to get fed and warm. Good luck to you that you don't have an outage, but prepare just in case.

It sounds like you are very prepaired. I am hoping to be there soon. I think it is the best thing you can do for yourself of you have the chance. I know that just having our food I didnt panic as bad as many of my neighbors did. We had no idea how long our power would be out.
