I had the bad experience once. That was in a foreign country. I took a taxi from the airport to my downtown hotel. The taxi driver asked me if I had been there before. I thought he was asking as a courtesy. I told him that was my first time. That gave him the good opportunity. Instead of driving straight to the hotel, he drove round and round getting the meter accummulate a large taxi-fare amount. When he finally took me to the hotel, the fare was about three times more than expected ! Very clever guy. I would never forget that. It was a lesson. So, whenever I get to a destination , and when the taxi driver asked me if I had been there before , I would always say "one hundred times". So, the driver would take me straing to the hotel ! Ha ha ! Have you been cheated by a taxi driver like that ?

Yes, my friends and I took a cab since it was very hot that day; And I thought that taking a taxi would get us home faster than taking a bus or a jeepney. Well, it did but the big problem was the "taxi meter" was 4 times the rate than we expected to pay. I live near my office so I know it should not cost that much. If by taxi, I can be home within 10-15 minutes.... oh well... from 10 minutes driving... we've noticed that the taxi meter was like a turbo that keeps on changing!!! I was so mad with the driver and I told him that we will only pay what we ALWAYS pay when taking a cab... He didn't agree but we told him that we will going to report him. So there, we just paid him the right amount... darn that taxi driver... I wish that I would never ever encounter that type of driver. Happy Mylotting!!!! Cheers!

Sad to say yes, and i am in my own country. But because i am not that familiar with the places in Manila i and my friend got cheated by a taxi driver too. We only know one route going to our destination but the driver went through another route making it appear to us that it was very far from where we got in his taxi. So, we ended up paying twice the regular amount. Sure these taxi drivers are clever in charging so much from their passengers, specially tourists, foreign and local at that. I hope that, your experienced was not here in my country. Though, there are those, who are taking advantage of their passengers, we still have those, who are honest and courteous. Nice to see you again, Greenline!

You should take care next time. Maybe it was one of the worst things. However you will learn from this sufferings. Today, the cheater become more and more. The trick also become more crafty. So we must pay attention not to be cheated. I also was cheated in XI AN. One day,I hang around the street. Suddenly I saw many people clustering in the corner. I found many people were betting. The guy spiled the black rice on the plate, then he covered the cover. The people began to bet how many rice the plate left. Someone got the money. I also bet the money. But i failed. At last , I found that I had been cheated. There were many black points on the plate. I admired the guy, because he was disability. He just take this to make a living.

hello my friend,i also had this bad experience before in a strange city. It happened to me 3 years ago. It was my first time to go to a strange city.and when i took a taxi in the road,I don't know how to go to the place i would be.So i told the taxi driver the name of the place. and i said to him to drive me by the nearest way. The driver said okay.So after about 2 hours long way, i finally arrive there.and I paid the taxi fee and said thanks to the man. But subsequently, when i referred this thing, my ancle said i am folled by the driver.I could reach there with only one third taxi fee.I was so shamed when i heard this information.lol good luck

I have experience that too when i went to manila with my fiancee. This taxi driver pretended like he is not familiar with the whole place and was turning round and round the whole area which pisses me off. We dont have enough sleep and we havent eat lunch yet. At the time we found a hotel he told us that he didnt have a meter which really made me so angry. And i asked him how much will is the bill and he asked too much and i only give him what i expect will be the cost of our ride. I gave him a bad look as we enter the hotel. I hate those kind of driver. They dont deserved to be given even a tip.

I traveled to my home country and there is a lot of cheating going on taxi-wise. I depended on my relatives to keep me from being scammed. It was so obvious I was an outsider and I felt like prey.

Hello my friend Green Line. When I got in a taxi in Paris I tried to speak French and look confident about where I knew I was going to. The taxi driver took me directly to the train station that I wished to go to. However when I was in Lithuania I asked a local person what the fare was likely to be. The taxi driver tried to charge 50 when it should have been 20, the lowest I could get was 25 so I was happy to get in the taxi. In Malaysia I fell down an open drain and injured my leg. I wanted to get a taxi for a four hour trip to the border with Singapore. Most drivers there drove in a dangerous way so I chose an older taxi driver. He was a fairly safe driver. I paid 100 and got two other travelers to ride in the back of the taxi. I charged them the same as the bus fare and they enjoyed traveling by taxi instead of the local bus. I knew a taxi driver before I moved and he told me some of the drivers cheated foreign travelers. He didn't I am glad to say and I know to be aware of scams when I travel. I suggest talking to a local person about the likely fare and acting as confident as possible my dear friend.

yeah, but not like how your taxi driver has cheated you!hehehe well, i havent experienced going to a new place and the cab driver drove round and round the place.. what i have experienced is that the cab driver would insist on taking a different route because the other route has a very heavy traffic.. but still he would choose his preferred route to make the trip longer!hahaha and also another experience where the cab driver would not look for a change.. i was so made with the lazy driver.. it was his responsibility to look for a change, my money is like 100 and i just have to pay him 80 pesos and he said he doesnt have 20 pesos and would not look for a way to change my 100 peso bill. he wants to get all the money!!grrrr.. i look for a friend since i'm just below the office building and paid him the right amount!

Oh yes, I have been cheated by taxi drivers a number of times. There were times when I'd ride the cab going to this certain place and my meter was just 80 pesos including the flat rate and the traffic at 8 PM, every thing. Then, when I rode another cab going home the meter was at almost 200 pesos and that was already 3 AM. We went the same route as the one I took going there and my meter doubled up. After that incident, every time I go home late and take a cab, I check the meter and talk to the driver. Another one was quite similar with yours although he didn't ask me if I'd been there but when I noticed he took another route, I asked him where's he going to pass and then I instructed him MY way. Hell the way he wanted was traffic. What's up with taxi drivers wanting to pass by traffic just to have higher meter but then the complain a lot about how expensive gas is.

I am a very experienced traveler, having traveled for more than 30 years. I usually avoid taking taxis if in the city, there is a subway or MRT system. Sometimes I have no choice if taxis are the only viable alternatives. Fortunately, I have not been cheated before by any taxi drivers abroad, but quite a number of times in a particular country (which I shall not name), I have encountered taxi drivers who are out to cheat me. To do this, they will turn their taxi meters off and instead quote a fare to the customer. I usually do my research of a place and know the roads, so I can estimate the distances of the places I am about to go to. Once a taxi driver refuses to use the meter when his taxi has one, he is out to exploit the customer. I've had drivers quoting me $10 to go to a nearby place where the fare is usually not more than $4. When they do that, I simply say "no thanks" and just wave them away. To avoid all the hassle, I will usually ask the driver if he will be using the meter. If he says no, then I will refuse to even board so that he cannot have the chance to cheat me. I'll just wait for the next one that uses the meter.

Almost! I was in Vietnam with my friends. We were there on a study trip. We were learning the Vietnamese language as part of the modules we take in the university. As such our Vietnamese were pretty okay then (not now!). Since there were many of us, we had to split in two cabs. Over there, they like to call their cab mates to fetch the entire group. That's okay. But once we were off, the two cab drivers conversed via radio to each other, trying to devise a way to cheat us by going round and round. My friend who sat in front heard what they were planning. So, she spoke in our local language to speak Vietnamese aloud in the cab so that the cab driver knows we can speak their language and understand his intentions to cheat us. Well, teh idea was abandoned subsequently. I guess it helps to know the language if you visit a foreign country. So be careful! You pointed out a very good point to avoid the situation. Thanks for the tip!

Yes, I have been cheated twice by a taxi driver in my home country. I just wish those drivers who are doing this to passengers had already reaped the consequences of what they did. It happened to me same thing what has happen to you. The driver go round and round an pass a long way until I was not able to reach my destination, I just let him stop and drop me off. He asked me triple amount, I almost cry, because I am so upset with him. I did not pay the exact amount he asked. I just regret I did not take note his plate number. Yes, the best thing to do is to tell them you have been to that place many times even if it's your first time so that they will not fool you. Be wise as a serpent.

Hi Greenline, i do. I have been cheated by taxi driver at local or foreign country. My case is little bit different, it is like this. Actually my destination is just few miles away and the taxi driver just pretend not very sure and just ask me to get on taxi, then start the journey. So within few minutes then it reach my destination. It really give me a bad impression on that taxi driver. Oh ya, for your case, i do use the same reply, but for your info, now they are more inteligence too, they will post next question what road you prefer to use, then they will know whether you are really know the place or not. BAd driver.

i hardly take taxi and my parents don't really allowed me to take taxi when i am in my home country because it is unsafe... here, i don't need to take taxi as the public transport is so reliable... the tram, train and bus are fantastic... so i seldom take taxi if ever... i don't think i had ever been cheated by a taxi driver before as i don't dare to go to places that i never know before by my own... take care and have a nice day...

yes of course i've been cheated by a taxi driver. it has happened to me both in my home country and when i was travelling. for my home country experience, it's the classic detour trick. the taxi driver will take a much longer route than necessary. i know the roads pretty well so i was quite angry with him. however, i did not argue with him other than telling him that he is going the wrong way. he acknowledged quite reluctantly and took the correct route. the overseas experience is something else. we got into the cab, reached our destination and paid for our fare. instead of returning us the change, the taxi drivers merely uttered a thank you and pretend to not understand a word when we asked for the change. cheers ;p

That's a good idea when traveling -- to indicate you have been somewhere many times when you really have not in order to try not to get scammed. I have never been scammed (as far as I know) by THAT way where the driver takes a long way or goes in circles, but once my boyfriend and I took a taxi from a hotel to a concert and I think the cab driver included his tip in with the price, because it was like $5 higher than what the meter said. Because of that, we were unsure if we should leave an additional tip or not because we were not positive but pretty sure he was inflating the price to get a bigger tip!

I had my fare share of having this abusive taxi drivers. Here in the philipphines if you dont know where you are going to, they will definitely take you round and round just to make the meter high. Actually 90 percent of people here in my country already experienced it thats besides from a fast o'meter they have....

actually i had the chance to cheat one.. what happenned is that i was paying him so i asked him ..do u have change for 100 $ ? so he kept searching then gathered a 100 then gave'em to me..we kept talking for a while until i reached my place & suddenly i figured out that i did NOT pay him the solid 100$ paper :D don't think bad of me.. i did before stepping out of the taxi & guess what ..he forgot about'em too so when i gave'em to him he was terribly thankful lol
