In what way(s) are you not frugal?

Right now, on several boards I've read, there are a lot of people feeling financial pressure - barely making minimums, or having utilities cut off. But people who still have a bit of cushion usually still have one or two "indulgences" - not necessarily a waste of money, just not a need. For us, we go out to lunch once a week. If times got tougher for us, we'd cut this out. In the summer, we picnic so it doesn't really cost much, but in the winter, we go to a mexican restaurant that we really like.
Do you have any indulgences left? Or, what have you done in their place so you still have a treat? We've stopped all book buying, so now we go to the library every two weeks.

Does little things really add up?
I don't get to spend huge chunks of money as all my moolah goes to paying bills. If I plan to spend alot, chances are something won't be paid that month.
But little stuff like paying an extra $2 for quality biscuits, or ordering a plate of smoked salmon entree when we go out to lunch are the indulgences I allow myself without working too much guilt into myself.
I would love to be as frugal as some of the frugal people I come across but sometimes life gets to me and buying a chocolate bar to console myself just seems like a necessity rather than a frivolous move.

The little things make it much easier to be frugal in most things. I try to save a bit on everything, and just spend on the things I know I will get pleasure on. I definitely know what you mean about the occasional chocolate bar.

I'm not frugal when it comes to buying groceries. I always intend to spena as little as possible, but I always spend so much. Then I'll try to cut back on the bill buy not buying something that I always end up needing. I don't really do the coupons thing. If I buy stuff that is cheaper, and it doesn't taste as good.

It's easy to spend more on groceries - it adds up so quickly, and they are definitely necessities. There are some areas where I cut back a little, though - we buy store brand pasta, wait until meat is on sale, that sort of thing. But we do have areas where we spend too much - we get a variety of fruit, we eat too much cheese, that sort of thing.

I've pretty much cut out all indulgences (being broke will do that), but I do have a couple left.
I will impulse buy at the grocery store. If I am really hungry for a certain food, I will get it regardless of cost. Plus, I still drink name brand soda because generic just does not cut it for me.
Giving to charity. This is normally a good thing, but when you are deep in debt with no job, making donations is probably not something the charity wants you to do right now. Help yourself so you are in a position to be able to help others.
Stocks. I am still keeping up my automatic purchase of stocks at Sharebuilder. I believe the stockmarket will recover. I don't want to interrupt building my stocks up right now. Buying now means I get the stocks cheaper than if I stopped and started again when things smoooth out.

I think each person has their own indulgences - at the grocery store, I always want avocadoes, and they are not exactly frugal.
Your stocks plan seems smart. This way, you end up buying more stocks when the prices are lower, and less stocks when the prices are higher, but over time it would all (hopefully) even out. Stocks seem a bit scary to me - I have mutual funds, so other people decide these things for me.

i still eat out every day for lunch, its horrible, i know how much money i am wasting, but its my one main indulgence, i dont get pedicures, i dont go shopping, i dont eat out for dinner every night, i dont have a maid or use premium gas, i just work my day job and want 30 mins a day where someone makes me food. i dont think thats wrong and as long as i can afford it, i'mma keep doing it!

This makes sense - you're frugal in some areas so that you can spend your money how you want it. I think that's the whole point of being frugal anyway.

The one thing that really stands out for me is coffee. We have a perfectly good coffee maker at home but we still go to Dunkin Doughnuts a few times a week and buy coffee from them. It is just something that my husband and I enjoy doing together. It is something that doesn't cost a whole lot but we don't need to do it either.

It's nice to keep little habits/traditions going. That's why we still go out once a week. (If we could, we'd probably go out more often).

I guess my splurges would be having high speed internet, and we do eat out once or twice a week. But, we always eat somewhere pretty cheap - like fast food. We can't afford the "sit down" nice restaurants right now. It would be nice to have a bit of cushion in savings, but I don't. On disability I live on a pretty small income and live check to check each month too.

I guess mine would have to be food, too. I'm very frugal and can usually find very good bargains so I do buy those, but I like to eat organic food when I can and that's expensive. I also indulge in raw organic milk, which I have to drive about 30 minutes one way to get every week.

I love to buy books. I do go out to dinner with disabled people whenever they gather, monthly or so, because I need community in a person, with face to face human beings for my personal sanity.

Um...we rent a movie sometimes. And I occasionally treat my family to some food. Either from a restauraunt or grocery store. I don't do it often. Maybe a couple times a year. But it's nice, you know?

We still go on vacations. Though we are taking cheaper vacations now and cutting costs where we need to I still think we need that family time that isnt infront of the TV. We are getting ready to take a trip soon and though it is hard to come up with the money the kids will only be kids once so we are going to Disneyland.

Our weakness is also going out to eat, or actually ordering out. We use to go to the restaurant and eat each week, but now we just take out since it is cheaper than going and ordering drinks with our meal and also leaving a tip. So about 2 or 3 nights we do take out.

This is our weakness too, but what we did to make it less expensive is go out for breakfast or for lunch. (This is helped by the fact that we are rarely both home at dinnertime). We go out once a week. We can't really afford more.

I"m married!!! *LOL* I'm the cheap one and he's finally comming to his senses from time to time to realize the value of his money. If I wasn't sooo frugal & price concious I don't think we'd be able to keep things afloat sometimes.
His biggest non-frugal things are: trading cars once a yr and still having a payment, smoking, and buying snacks and treats all the time @ work & they charge a mint!
For me: Does having DSL count? ;)

My indulgences? A certain brand of ice cream and a magazine or two once every month or so. There really isn't money for many costly indulgences, so I don't really buy anything.

I am newly retired & am usually frugal about some things, but some things I'm not!! I REFUSE to give up my cable with DVR, premium channels....I did, though, eliminate 2 of the premium movie channels!! I have a laptop but rather than pay extra for the web, I just go to the libary, which is 5 mins. from where I live - so THERE I'm frugal......I eat out at least once a week, and I do buy DVDs, CDs and books - however, they are almost always on sale - so in that way I'm frugal, but not frugal, if you know what I mean.....I will not stop eating out, and not stop buying the goodies I enjoy - candy, cookies, etc., although I do usually get those on sale, too!!!!!! gee, maybe I'm more frugal than I thought!! LOL Let me put it this way: a good friend's mom had a huge collection of Hummel figurines; some of which were quite valuable, but she enjoyed them so much she never thought of her collection in that way.....I said that there's 'no such thing as an inexpensive hobby, right?" referring to how costly some of them were, and she came back with, 'well, that's my drinking and smoking'!!! I loved it.............!!

I love it! looking around at my hobbies... I "drink and smoke" a lot!
My FIL enjoys splitting wood and just being outdoors in the woods. He's always referred to it as his "golf game" as most of his friends would rather swing woods than chop it!

There's reallt only one big way. First of all, I was lost my job in April. I was making 12.25 hr. I have never made any more than that except briefly, I had a job where I was making about 28,000 a year. And I was living at home. Anyway, long before I got withrew of those jobs I got this offer and a sample of Gevalia coffee. I coffee. So I tried it. It was thje best I had ever had. But looking at the offer it was at that time about $5.25 for an 8 oz box, plus shipping. I thoght I can't afford that, that's rediculus. So I had m free sample and that was that. A year later, I got the same offer and another free sample and I thougt you know what? I'm living at home, I have almost no bills, I'm going to splurge. Well fast forward about 20 yuears I now have a mortgage, many bills, no job but I still get that Gevalia which now I thing is up to about 7 dollars for an 8 oz box. Othewr than that, even witnout a job, I still go out to breakfeast once a week. Other than than that, I'm pretty tighyt with my money.

Well, like most people, We've cut our spending to almost a bare minimum. Our weekly shopping trips have dwindled to almost once a month. Making sure we get EVERYTHING we need in one trip.
My little indulgence... Kids. No, I don't buy THEM, (MY three are enough, thank you!) but the fund raisers they do for their schools or groups. Case in point... my nephew is selling cookie dough for school. do I really NEED to spend $11 on a carton of dough? Especially when I am very capable of making it myself? No, but I buy it anyway, because it's for school, and schools aren't getting the financial support they need to keep going.
My other splurge? Books. Especially when it's a title I've been wanting to read. I try to buy on sale when I can, find at yard sales, or even visit the library, but there are just some books that I have to have--no matter the price! (sigh)

Hi there cutepenguin!
Well, there I still some indulgences and that is on eating outside from time to time. But that is because of my work schedule. Another is going out of town. I really can't give that up as it is one of my ways to relieve myself of stress at the same time, visit relatives especially my grandparents. I have already cut down on buying bags and shoes which are actually my weaknesses. I can now control myself in that area which I believe is a good thing.

Our guilty indulgence is still going out to eat. But we still keep that within our overall food budget. I just work harder to save more on the food we eat at home so we can still splurge a little and eat out.

Special cooking ingredients. We stopped eating out, so i began to cook something special at least twice a week and most of the time, i will text my husband to buy things like special cheeses, pastries ingredients, special sauces, etc. without really having a plan yet on what to cook. So sometimes we go over the budget when it comes to buying grocery items.

I'm not frugal in any sense, and I know that I should be ashamed of myself because of that!
I always buy a book instead of getting it at the library, and I will always buy a DVD rather than rent it.
I buy silly little things, I always like to buy a new pen and a notebook when I'm out for example, and I always want new bags and new clothes.
My credit card is suffering!!
