I was born intelligent but education ruined me

I saw this slogan on a shirt on the above Ebay thingie. I thought it was quite cute, and it got me to thinking about something I've heard before. Have any of you ever heard of babies being born intelligent but losing the knowledge and relearning it from school and experiences? I've heard this once or twice before, and while I am not sure if it is true, I think that in a way it may very well possibly be true. It's intriguing to say the least, and I wonder if Baby Einstein might help ensure that children retain more intelligence then they lose, and then regain. So what are your own takes on this? Do you believe it or do you think it's a load of bull hockey?

Where do I start? Intelligence and knowledge are two different things. We are born with whatever intelligence we will have for life, assuming no brain traumas; knowledge is added later, and that comes from education and experience. As for farmers not needing education, where on earth did you get that idea? Or rather, how do you define education if you think it's something farmers don't need? Farming is a highly skilled business which requires considerable knowledge (education) to be successful, just like any profession. Digging ditches and collecting garbage, even, need some knowledge. It seems that, as usual, most of the responders haven't bothered to read past the title line and have taken this purely as a discussion about a cute T-shirt. I took it that the point of your opening post was the theory that we lose intelligence and regain it later, which is, as you put it, BS. What I was questioning was your definition of education. Education is not just what we learn in the classroom, and I'll agree that teaching is not what it should be in that setting, but includes all learning, including that which we get from experience and from actually doing things. Education is not just what we learn from books and other formal processes, it is the getting of knowledge. Lash

There are a good many psychologists, and also spiritualists whom I have heard say that babies are born with ready made genetic templates to become utterly fantastic human beings with exceptional natural intelligence and abilities. They go on to say that it is the present day society, in any era, which 'de-programmes' them and nullifies their abilities. Society subdues them, and us, on a continual basis, with the net result of a world full of fast asleep sheep - compared to what we could be like. This is all done very deliberately by governments and unconsciously by the masses. The last thing any government wants is someone who can think for themselves. An example of effective 'programming' is, lets say ... Tax! Tax - now, who said you WILL pay tax? Governments. Who the hell do they think they are? I don't recall signing an agreement, before I could be born, which allows other humans to steal money out of my toil, without my control, and against my will. And yet .. I bet you think that's a barmy thing to say? Well there you go - my point in case. An example of programming ... which we call normality.

No, actually I agree with you. I think tax is just an elaborated scheme made to get more money out of the people and into the fat wallets of the governmental leaders of society. Lol, but that's just my own take. Glad that someone's heard more about the "babies being born with intelligence thing" and I'd have to agree, we probably are born with it, but we are stupefied by other means... I guess it'd go along to explain why older generations are smarter then newer ones. If I was every forced to do math without a calculator I'd be a lot better at math. I appreciate the response.

Actually, yes, I believe that we are all born with intelligence and as we get older we do lose it and have to relearn it. Some people retain that knowledge, sadly, I was one of the people who never really kept her intelligence.

I am sure in ways that you have, and that you are just not aware of it. You may have been a fast learner, and if you were, that in and of itself is a retained knowledge! I hope that you have a great day, Oh and I appreciate the response!

Hi SOmeCowgirl, ohhh..that is indeed cute! I encounter a lot of intelligent friend but never finished College because they were not motivated and they find it boring,,,It is very possible really that a certain person will be destroyed by education because of poor motivation, unfair treatment, bias judgment and etc! But, a lot of them are successful because they have common sense and this leads them to survive and cope up in this demanding and competitive world but once the environment of education is very healthy, the experiences and learning inside the classroom will lead the person to become more intelligent person!

had you seen that on my shirt because i like wearing that shirt people really like that slogan well to be honest i do not believe that and i think if you not give education how will the child learn babies are born with no intelligence they have to make themselves intelligent by hard work do not allow a child to go to school he and a monkey will have no difference as both of them will know how to only eat ,sleep and steal things ,have a good day and happy lotting.

Well some people believe it and others don't. Either way a child should be put in school or educated in some way unless they are to become a farmer and therefore I suppose education won't be needed to terribly much as a farmer really on needs to learn to read, write, and tend the farm... I suppose measurements would be good though. I appreciate the response, you have a great day!

I saw some where on the bag of a student this slogan and even he was proud to show that. This slogan is true at some extent because the knowledge what we get is from studying only whether its good or bad .... Education is good but its missuse is not good..

On a related subject, I've heard that all children even out to the same or similar level of learning once they enter school. For instance, some kids who are really smart and get a good head start on their letters, numbers etc. will be slowed down to the speed of the rest of the class while they learn once they hit first grade. For me, school was a dumbing down experience. I was way advanced when I first went in, but the teachers kept insisting that my mom stop teaching me advanced topics at home. And, she did! So, I guess I would say that school ruined me, cause it didn't provide much education I didn't already get from home. Thanks for the fun topic.

I thought that it happened to you. It was just a slogan. Hahahaha! Well, I don't like such slogan. I think all of us are born intellegent but others developed faster. Others lack exposures that is why they are left behind. Schools and experiences do sharpen our knowledge. I mean they really add our knowledge.

I believe it to an extent. I used to ask a lot of questions to people including teachers but never used to get proper answers. As of engineering it was worse.. I felt I would have done it in correspondence. Self studying is better. Yeah learning is actually a part of life. Knowledge is what you gain from everything you do. Education is a way to make you follow that path.

I've seen that too and made me think...Here is another quote regarding education......"We waste 1/4th of our life studying how to waste 3/4th of our life".
