Would You Still Travel If The Trip Is 13 Hours One Way?

It will be a long weekend here in Canada because it is thanksgiving this coming weekend. it will be a 3 day away from work. I am mulling or thinking of going to New York by train. There is a train that departs from Toronto every 8:30 in the morning and arrives in New York at around 9:30 in the evening. So it will be like 13 hours to get there and then 13 hours to go back. If I would sleep when I arrive in NY, then it would be like just staying there for 1 day. The train ride would be 200 bucks round trip but I guess it will be a very very short trip that I thought would not be worth doing. I may have to defer my plans when I have a longer vacation time. If you were in my shoe, would you go for it?

I have traveled that long (and longer) several times. I suppose it just depends on how badly you want to go. To me though, travel is always worthwhile, no matter the length of the trip or the time it takes to get there.

hai , i have travelled a lot more than that in train as well as in bus. while on a tour from my college to simla from there we went to kulumanali it was the worst experince that i have ever expericed . one full day sitting in the train and another full day sitting in the bus. i was not bored because we went has a gang of 30 to 35 of them so chatting with freids was also a good experince

I think for me it would depend on whom I was going to see and how long it had been since I had seen them. Thirteen hours is a long time to travel for just a three day trip, but how long before you will be able to make the trip again? So I guess it depends on how much you really want to spend the weekend traveling.

I think that Amtrak trains are enjoyable and comfortable to travel around on. However a couple of times I have had five hour delays of them so one of those times they provided me at midnight with a free taxi ride. New York would be such a very exciting destination for Thanksgiving. A weekend break or short vacation is always worth it. If I was in your shoes I would go it. If you do I hope that you will have a fantastic time. Good luck with your traveling.

There is so much to see in New York, especially if you are talking about the "Big Apple", New York City. I think I too would want more than just one day. Even if you have an adrenaline rush and enjoy the city for a few hours when you first arrive, you still aren't going to get to see much in just that little time. Is there anyway you can get more time off from work. How about calling in sick on Monday? LOL Well, my traveling friend. I have only been there once myself and was there for 5 days and still felt deprived. Whatever you decide, I hope you get a chance to go some time in the near future. Good luck to you, and have a great day!

You are complaining because of 13 hours. Well, you should try going to Australia, when a one way trip can take you as many as 30 hours! Neverending, I tell you!

I would still go if a trip is 13 hour one way. We have taken longer. All we did was to stop in at a motel and then start on the next morning. But you forgot to put the word "only' in the title. I would not want to stay just for one day if the travel time is the same amount of time as the time I stay there. I would rather wait until I could stay at a place longer. I was even disappointed when we had to leave Winnipeg and go to Saskatoon and then we could only stay for the weekend, because my husband had to go for his physiotherapy and that trip just took eight hours one way and eight hours back.

13 hours is really a long trip. I think I couldn't last. Even 5 hours of trip is very long for me. That would be so tiring and it will really make me dizzy and vomit. And thinking of another 13 hours going back. Well, climate there is different from here in the Philippines. I guess, it's much comfortable traveling there. Have a nice day!

If it is 200 bucks to go i don't think it is worth it. If it was cheaper than that I would still go and stay for a weekend or so, but you said you would only be there for a day huh. There are still plenty of things to do in New York City that the trip would be well worth it.

This kinda reminds me of whenever I plan a trip to Singapore. I usually take the bus and even if I have 2 full weekends I still won't go at the request of my friends there. The bus ride only takes 5 hours, but I think anything that cuts me a lot of time to explore the place more is a bummer. So if I were in your shoes, I think I would postpone it until I have maybe a 5-day vacation. Happy thanksgiving!

If I am in your situation then nothing can stop me from traveling. I love to travel and in fact I have experience to travel 36 hours one way and another 36 hours to go back home! 13 hours is just 1/3 of my experience from that situation. I traveled Davao City to Naga City in Bicol Region in the Philippines via land and it is a great experience. I can see so many beautiful/worst views in the window of the bus and I tell you that is my most long hours of travel so far.

hhhmmmmm.. have you been to New York? or it will be your first visit? if its your first, I think it would be best if you spend a few more days in the big apple. As what they said, there are so many things/places to see there and if you did not have the time to see these things/ places, then on your way home, I guess you will be thinking hard on how to get that 200 bucks back.. Travel especially if it is for a vacation is supposed to be for rest and relaxation and for you to enjoy.. why don't you just do that... If you have doubts that you will be wasting your time, effort, and money.. then plan for a longer trip. One that you will really enjoy...

No way. I rather stay at home and do usual routine because it's a hassle to travel that far and yet you are not that sure if you're going to enjoy the rest of your trip because some incidents might happen. Its really a waste of time because on that 13 hours, you can do many things already. Hmp! ^^,

Muelitz, I would make the trip and I will make it out on the night after work. That will give me some extra allowance for traveling time to have more time in New York. The train ride is quite enjoyable without the delays and I am making the above allowance so that it would not give me a bad start. Have a nice trip and take care.

Definitely. Life is more than a 13 hour trip -- do you decide to give up at birth? On that 13 hours who knows what you will see, or who you will meet. I LOVE traveling, there is always something new to see -- something you might look at every day and go "I never noticed that." I live south of Boston and just yesterday I realized I'd never heard a bellboy blow a whistle to call a taxi for people. I have no idea where the whistling was coming from at first. Plus, it's the fall and the foliage is beautiful. Enjoy your trip if you end up going!
