How did your first attempt at baking a cake turn out?

When I was a teen, I tried to bake a cake.
Of course, at the time there were so many
things I didn't know about baking or cooking.
For instance, I didn't know that you were
supposed to allow the cake to cool before
icing.
So, basically all my icing seeped into
the cake.
My troubles didn't stop there, the cake
actually tasted mildly burnt.
I still can't figure out where I went wrong.
How was your first attempt at baking cake?
Or, baking anything for that matter?

I don't remember my first attempt at baking a cake, but I think I've always done well with it.
I remember my husband tried to surprise me one year for my birthday by baking me a cake. It split down the middle and the icing seeped into the cake, but it actually tasted really good that way, lol.
He demands I make him a cake every year for his birthday and Father's day. Some years that's all he gets and he's perfectly happy with that. I've been doing it since the first year we were dating. Sometimes I had to make 2, one for him and one to share with company.

What a sweet gesture for him to do!
I'm glad the cake was good.

Oh, I do remember the one and only time I ever attempted angel food cake. I didn't have the right pan, so tried to attempt something different. I used a regular cake pan and put a cup in the middle.
Well I didn't realize the cake would rise as much as it did, remember it was my first attempt, lol. It oozed over the side of the pan and all over the oven, knocked the cup out of place which melted in the hot oven. HUGE mistake.
I was only 16 at the time, so can't blame me too much. But since that experience I've never attempted to make angel food cake again. I just buy the premade stuff now, lol.

My first baking experince. I remember I had a easy bake oven when I was really little. it took to long to get anything baked so I switched to a oven. I think I did pretty well as long as I had someone there to help me. I think the worat think i have done when cooking was trying to make gravy. I added more flour then I was suppose to.

Awww! I remember those!
A friend of mine had an easy bake oven.
I was so green with envy!
Later when I found out that it took
sixteen hours to bake a muffin,
I stopped feeling so bad.

yeah it took forever. it had it's own special cake mix but there wasn't that much to it and it did seem to take forever, i tried using regular cake mix one time when my cousin stayed over and it didn't cook it right. After awhile it seemed like a waste of time using it.

My first attempt was brownies in my early teens, it worked out rather nice even though they weren't slighly mushy in the inside as they should've been. I hadn't put on a time and I forgot about them and took them out a couple of minutes late. They were still fine, but they were a bit more solid and crunchy then they should've been .

my first attempt on cake baking was 10 years ago. It was my boyfriend's (at that time) birthday so i tried to impress him and his family by baking him a chocolate cake! It took me 5 hours to finish everything from weighing the ingredients to making the icing (with happy birthday wish writing!). The cake was flat, too dense and taste like cocoa, not like a chocolate cake! The icing taste weird (i actually called my aunt who was 100km away on how to make the icing!. Nevertheless, my boyfriend said he likes the cake. So does his family and friends. But i know they just don't want to hurt my feeling.

I am interested in cooking and I think I have the talent in this aspect. I also buy books for it. Therefore, my first attempt to bake a cake was very successful and I was glad to it:) I think as long as you follow the methods from the cooking books. Usually the result won't go bad:)

You're so right! I didn't follow
any of the directions. I used a boxed
cake mix and still forgot to read the
directions on the frosting.
I was very impatient.
But it was so much fun learning.
Thanks for dropping by.
It's always fun to talk with you.

I usually like baking, but I did not have much luck with the first apple strudel I tried, as I put some paprika instead of cinnamon! Thank goodness I am an experienced apple strudel maker now and they taste and look good too!

I guess the first time I baked anything would have been with my easy bake oven I had as a child. I loved that thing and would bake all kinds of stuff and make my mom and dad and brother eat it. LOL I can't remember exactly which thing I made first but they always came out good.

I was ten years old and cooking a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings. I was cooking very young. I do not remember what the first thing was that I cooked. I know that at times I have made flops and when living at home if I made a flop I got whipped for it.

My mom used to make cookies using yellow cake mix. However when I was a teen and tried to make her cookies, I added the milk I was supposed to omit to make them cookies instead of cake. So you probably guessed by now my cookies ended up being a choco chip yellow cake! *LOL*

I'm not good at spreading Icing, but I've made several cakes out of box mixes and they get eaten. I suppose that's good enough. :)

My first attempt on baking cake was not so good.It was not burn.I baked it on time but the taste was not as perfect as i expected. There was something wrong with the mixture of my ingredients.Actually its not my fault. It was the recipes fault which i just printed out from a website.Since then i had learned something.I have some good cake recipes and still trying more for other recipes.

I've been interested in cooking and baking since I can remember. I was in elementary when I tried baking cupcakes. I think i have that "it" as a cook since I can easily understand recipes when i read one. I've seen my sister baked and so far i saw how their cake turned out to be rubberized cake. They got frustrated over those recipes. So far I have also had my share of disgusting results but its not so much of a big mistake but maybe i was only always in a hurry to finish my baking. My first choco cupcake was a success. The next was baked macaroons was also good and chiffon and the next and the next....

My first cake baking experience was a HUGE success..I was in my teens then myself. It was the biscuits I tried afterwards that were a disaster. I mean..they were HARD, burnt, and since I had not used separate tins to shape them, they had spread across the tray and almost run into each other. The only good thing about the whole episode was..everyone in my family ate every piece and assured me it tasted great! That realy inspired me to go on to learn better, take more care and bake great biscuits AND cakes.

Like anything else it takes practise. I had a very similar experience and I still mess up once in a while. It's usually eadable but often not by much.

My first attempt at baking a cake was in school during our home economics class. For cooking, the class was divided into groups of four, and each person was assigned certain things to do for the recipe. Somehow, adding salt was not assigned to anybody, so each of us corrected the omission by doing it ourselves-unbeknownst by the others. We ended up with a beautiful cake that tasted like a frosted block of salt. It was just awful.

My first attempt was under the direction of my grandmother..so it went pretty well.
But when I tried to bake an angel food cake...oh boy. I dropped it when I was taking it out of the oven and it bounced right back up at me. I still have not tried to bake another one and it is 50 years later. I don't know what I did wrong.
