Do you think you're underpaid by your company? Why?

Most people think that they are underpaid. Try to ask around and you'll find nearly 80% of the people saying YES. But when I tried to ask them why do they think so? Most could not answer me. I know some people actually go and do some research before coming out with that "underpaid" statement while some are just...greedy? What about you? Do you think you're underpaid? Why?

I don't think I am underpaid as I know my salary and other companies salaries when I joined my current job itself. Though many of them pay considerably more than my company does, I am the one who opted for this job. So I don't see any reason in wining about being paid less.

Similarly, I don't think I am underpaid as well because I always do research on the average salary in the job market by consulting to my recruiters (not from my company). I guess we belong to the rare breed of people who don't complain about being underpaid.

Greed. That's the word. Some people, in fact, do nothing much in their job and they still complaint a lot. There are so many people who are jobless nowadays, and yet, these "underpaid victims" don't realize how fortunate they are. =_=

Nope, I'm not underpaid since my salary compensates my work well. I just can't figure why there are people still complaining about their salaries where indeed they do nothing/only few things in the office. I don't want to receive a higher salary if i'll only have the same work as i have now. It's the pressure how others lifetyles that keeps us wanting to have higher salaries, but reality is we deserve what we are paid for.

I KNOW I'm underpaid but it was my choice to take a position that I am very over qualified for in order to work close to home and avoid a long commute. I moved to Florida from Maryland and left a job where I was middle management in the computer technology field, with a degree and many specialized certifications. The position I now hold does not require a degree, just database and accounting knowledge. Since I've been working for this company I have become the unofficial technical support for all of the computers so that we don't have to depend on the IT Dept. from our parent company. Other responsibilities have been added along the way. I'm still not willing to drive for over an hour to go to a better paying job so I'm not complaining!

You're underpaid but you chose to do that willingly. I think not many are like you. Hahhaa. Most people would be cursing all the time just because they think they're underpaid (unwillingly). Who doesn't want more money? The strange thing is, when you told them there's this new job in a place an hour's drive away........they wouldn't go for it. Why? Because they will complain it's far, bla bla bla. And after a while, they will stop complaining about that...and return to their complaints that they're underpaid :P

Daydreamer, I've been in the workforce for a long time. My husband and I intentionally moved to Florida to live a less stressful life close to family. We are financially secure so money is not the main reason why I work. I am more interested in the quality of my life than bringing home a bigger paycheck. My job is 15 minutes away so I can be sitting on my deck watching my grandchildren play in the yard nextdoor 45 minutes sooner than if I worked someplace else for more money.

Spalladino, You know what you want, which is good for you. There are a lot of people who don't know what they want. I really respect you for the decision. 45 minutes of time spent with your family definitely worth a lot more than 45 min stuck on the road (just for that few extra bucks).

yes I am definitely underpaid. its the main reason I want to change my job.I have seen the situation in comparison. I joined previous company with my batch mates from same college. so we had same salary. i changed the company and joined the current one. some of them have also come here but with much greater salary. so i am underpaid.

Maybe talk to your boss and find a solution? It's better to tell him you required a raise than to give him the ultimatum - resign letter. ;) Some bosses would just act stupid until you throw your letter to him.

Hi there daydreamer20! If I were to consider the tasks I need to accomplish as well as the nature of my job, I would say that I am underpaid. I teach in one of the universities here in our city. We are only paid for the actual time we spend IN the classroom. That is at least one hour for every subject. Whatever we do after those hours are NOT actually paid. For instance, the time spent preparing the lectures, quizzes and exams. Even the time spent rating the working papers is not paid. Well, it's really a matter of commitment...

O_O and you're still working in there? is it your commitment or your interests? Because that seems like it's a bit ridiculous. Preparing lectures and quizzes are part of the job, unless you're talking about a part-time job. Otherwise, it'll be quite tiring and time consuming, with minimal income. Bet the university is earning quite a lot =_=

Okay an answer with no research. I believe most people believe they are underpaid because because when you have to work 2 jobs to just put food on the table and pay your regular bills, these are the ones that ones that are not from luxery as in credit cards. like housing heat electric. When I was little just my dad worked and mom stayed home, and we always had what was needed. I remember daddy saying he would get like 75 cents an hour. Mom saying that bread was 5 cents a loaf and rent was 25 dollars a month. Now when I was 20 with one child the min wage was 3.25 and hour but but rent for me was 350 dollars a month. 75x40= 38 a week 3.25x40= 130.00 They say if you can pay your rent in one week you are doing well.. remember the cost of everything else went up as well. Most people that do not have a college education just want to be able to provide thier family with what they need. Remember this includes food utilities clothing. Most people that do the grunt work to keep a company in the red feel they should get paid more because in reality they are the backbone that keeps it going. I owned a restaraunt and people use to think I was crazy for paying the dishwasher 13 an hour. You can get one for minimum wage. To me the dishwasher was the back bone. Not only did he do dishes he mopped and he helped out with clearing the tables. He was responsible to make sure we had dishes clean all the time without clean dishes we had no business. I realize we are in business to make money but why do so many need to become millionaires? Pay someone enough to survive and you will have employees for a long time. it cost way too much money to keep on training people. Treat people with respect and appreciate everything they do. When you have an extroidinary month think about yor employees. throw out a small bonus. Happy employees are good employees.

Actually, your reply is not really answering the question but I'm marking it as the best response due to your detailed explanation. :D And you're right about that - employer should look at the few key people and pay them well accordingly. No point saving that few dollars, but losing the good people in the long run since you'll need to spend more than "that few dollars" to retrain the new guys. Funnily though, the employers who always said they're good in calculating profit/earning/cost.......are always the one who don't see far and ended up in negative profit.

YES!!!!YES!!!!!We don't have service charge in the hotel I'm working. I mean its already a trend that hotels give SC for their staff but unfortunately we don't have it. I envy those working in other hotels because they enjoy their hard earned money while we only have to get used of our usual pay. SAD!
