How often do you empty the filter on your washing machine?

I was recently having a conversation with a friend of mine about washing machines and their performance. I asked her if she had emptied her filter and she said 'what filter'! So I guess that answered that question! She has had her washing machine for more than 2 years now and has never checked the filter! Mind you I could understand why as I offered to go to her house to help her with it but low and behold we couldn't find it!!
Anyway, I try to empty mine once a month how about you?

Is this just on new washing machines? Mine is 5 years old and I don't find a filter anywhere on mine. I was never aware the washing machines had them. I am going to have to find the mfg book and see if mine has one hidden somewhere! Thanks for bringing that up!

Hi there quinnkl
It's good that you are going to check it out then you will know. It has come to my attention that automatic washing machines don't have them because they don't need them so I don't think it has anything to do with the age of a machine rather the type. Let me know what you find!!
Thank you for your response

I didn't know washing machines had filters either. I guess I will have to ask my hubby to check ours and see where its at and see if it needs to be replaced or cleaned out.

Hi there Alouie
Hmmm, well you don't actually need to change it just empty it. Mine is in like a little door to the bottom left hand corner of the washing machine (outside) and I just push the little door open and then I unscrew the little cap inside which holds the filter. Be careful though because loads of water will come out too and that is where you might find lots of little stones and stuff. Some washing machines have like a plastic facia at the bottom of the outside of the machine which you can detach and then you will see the cap from there. Good luck in your search and let me know how you get on!!

Hey there marciascott
I think all machines vary and some machines don't even have a filter as I have found out through this discussion!! You are just as well to have a look around your machine to check or check the machine's manual to make sure. I think that if your washer is an automatic then it won't have one.
Things are ok with me thanks, haven't been on myLot much this last couple of days or so because I wasn't well one day, have been tired and not felt like mylotting. How are things with you? Have you forgot about the Avon thing?
Thanks for your response

My washer is pretty new but I don't see anywhere they would have a filter for me to clean out. Never heard of that before.

I have never had a washing machine with a door like you describe. I just went and looked all over inside and out and couldn't see anything that looked like a door or 'sock' thing. On the maintenance instructions inside the lid of the washer it says to replace the hoses every 5 years, but nothing about cleaning out a filter. I wonder if some models don't have access to the filter. That way the washing machine will fail and you have to buy a new one.

Well this is a new one on me! Never heard of a filter in a washing machine. I bought my machine new about six years ago, so if there is one it surely has not been emptied out! I try to check my lint filter on my dryer on a regular basis though. My washing machine is a top loader, not a front loader, does that make a difference if there is a filter or not? Mine is a top loader. Thanks!

I try to do it as often as I remember, but I don't remember all that often. It's easy to find mine. I like the EnergyStar rating I have for mine as well. I was just thinking today that I spend entirely too many of my waking hours washing, hanging, drying, folding, & putting away people's clothes. Whose idea was clothing to start with! probably the guy who did get stuck doing the job that's who.

haha, this is really an interesting topic.
maybe most of us have paid no atteention to such "small" questions, but in fact they are so important to our healthy.
And if you think washing machines are not clean, i mean because of the bacteria in the filters. so why not wash your clothes-the light ones by your hands?

Hi there LingoWang and welcome to myLot
It is very important to clean the filter often if your machine has one as it will effect how clean your washing gets and it is good to maintain all machinery. I don't have time to hand wash clothes, not with the speed that my boys get their clothes dirty!!

Now you have me wondering if I have been neglecting this chore. I didn't know my washing machine had a filter either! I am a bit surprised because my husband is a mechanic and is fussy about making sure the filters on everything is clean. I would have thought he would have been harping on me about not cleaning the filter by now. I will have to ask him when he comes home tonight. If my machine has a filter I can guarantee it is full of all sorts of interesting junk. I hardly ever wash a load of clothes that does not include barbie shoes, kleenex, lipgloss, nuts and bolts and many other interesting items. lol

Hi there loved1
Well I do hope you remembered to ask your hubby and he was able to point you in the right direction. You never know you might even find the odd coin in there!! Doing the washing has got to have it's perks where ever you can find them!!
Thank you for your response

I used to have to do mine every two weeks, and the amount of gunk and even coins I would find in the filter! Ewww it wasn't a pleasant job but it had to be done and it was satisfying to put back a nice clean filter, ours was easy to find, right at the front at the bottom, however Wolfie was a naughty wolf because he didn't tell his ex that it needed to be done and had to be done! It's weird isn't it as soon as I moved out that washing machine went wrong and my ex had to replace it, hum hum hum!!!! Guess it wasn't only the cats that missed me eh!

what filter? the one that looks like a socks on the upper part of the tub? well if it is the one I empty it almost every time I do the laundry, that would be twice a month. is there a right time intervals to empty it? as for me I really can't stand seeing it with dirts inside so I changed it before I do that laundry.

I don't have a filter on my washing machine either. I didn't know washing machines even had them. I bought mine brand new almost a year ago and I don't have a filter. On my dryer I have the lent catcher (whatever that is called) and I empty that after each load.
But my washer does not have a filter and I have never even heard of one on a wahser. Maybe certain ones do? If I have ever had one on any washer I have ever owned then I have never changed one!

I empty my washing machine's filter every six months according to the instructions manual. I should've bought a machine that hasn't a filter but they were more expensive then the "classic" ones. Although it seems an easy operation, emptying the filter is quite hard because you have to pay attention when you unscrew it and again when you screw it back, because if it's not tightened enough there will be water all over the floor next time you wash...

Hello there maverick_ss
I find that when I empty my filter I have to do it slowly, slowy because if I just unscrew it quickly all the water in there comes gushing out so I unscrew it a bit, mop up the bit of water then unsrew it a bit more. Let this be a warning to all those that are checking out their filters for the first time!!
