Why do cats lay all over books and stuff? That can't be comfortable, right?

My big cat loves lounging all over my books
on the side table. I can't imagine laying on
anything that uncomfortable.
But he seems perfectly fine with it.
What's up with that?
Why do cats like laying on books and other stuff.
That can't be comfortable, right?
Why can't they just pick a nice over stuffed lounge
chair and get comfy like the rest of us?

It goes back to their time in the jungle. Their instinct to be on something to pounce. To get on things is just their natural instinct. They are doing what comes from the big cats , back so long, long, ago.

I don't think it has anything to do with comfort...I think it's kind of a game for them. It's like with our cat Morgana, she will wait till she see's me typing away and then she'll come and stand right in front of the monitor with her fur all puffed so I can't see anything on the screen. She'll also see me quilting and then she'll climb up on my chest and want to be held.

i've wondered that myself.my cats always seem to pick the most uncomfortable looking things to sit on.like radiators, which are all bumpy.i imagine they consider the heat coming from it a worthwhile trade.

hi beautyqueen I have a theory, I think it has something to
do with our scent, that our cats know that belongs to us'
so they love to lie on it even though it cannot be all
that comfortable. and an o verstuffed charir oh no thats'
too comfy. lol lol lol. When I had a cat she loved to lie
on my freshly laundered clothes in my clothes basket, bad
cat.

Oh! That's sweet.
Though I'm sure that I would have
been very cross if she had been my cat.
Though you know me.
I love my fur babies.

The DVD player is warm!
Cats like that.
And they're just plain nuts,
so that's the other explanation.

I find my cats usually lay on my papers or books in order to get my attention while I'm reading or writing something. It's not that they want to lay on the papers, they want to lay near you so that you'll see them and pay attention to them. Another reason my cats lay on paper is because it crinkles. My parents had a cat that was obsessed with tearing the newspaper apart. Every week, they'd give him the paper after they were done with it and he'd shred it to pieces! He loved the crinkley ripping noises that it made.

He is doing guard duty! Also, you can look at it as another stack of books you don't have to dust. I'm not too sure why they pick such uncomfortable places to sleep, maybe it's to make us feel guilty that we haven't gotten them that down bed to sleep on! (LOL) As for sleeping on that nice over stuffed lounge chair...I wouldn't sleep on one either as I would chance getting sat on!!!. I had a Siamese cat that would sleep on the chair seats until one day we had an overweight lady stop by to visit. She weighed in at 400 pounds!! Well when she showed up I tried to decide whether to grab the dog and put him in the bedroom or to move the cat. Well I choose the dog. I got back just in time to see this broad butt heading down towards my cat!!! Yes, the lady sat on the cat...fortunately she was able to stand up quick. The cat was extremely upset and all during the lady's visit the cat sat on the end table glaring at the woman. I thought that she would check the chair before she sat down, but she didn't. From that day on the cat never slept on a chair again.
As for sleeping on DVD players etc, one of my Siamese is currently sleeping on my dish receiver. There is a certain amount of heat generated by electrical devices and cats love that warmth. If you have a heated water bed, you will find them perched there during the day, and they will fight you for the bed at night. Cat's have a mind of their own, and will choose the most inconvenient place to lay, especially if you are trying to do something, that's where they will lay simply because they want your attention. If you try to move them it creates the boomerang effect! I guess that's why there are cat people and dog people.

I dont think it can be comfortable but if they are happy with it then more room o the sofa for me!! lol
I read in a newspaper earlier this week that a cat loves lying on her owners clothes extractable line (those that you stand in the garden and fold out!) When the cat knows there is washing to go out, she follows her owner and perches out all day, coming in for food. It was funny.
Ive managed to find the link for you!

Its like children when they sit in shopping trolleys, that cant be comfortable. Especially when they are sitting the seat and fall asleep. I think its great how children fall asleep anywhere and everywhere!!

I think they lie on to claim it as theirs. To my cat, the entire house belongs to him.

Cats are funny like that. They generally like to sit high up somewhere. One of my cats sits on my keyboard when I'm on the computer and when I push her off she takes a huge leap to the bookshelf which is next to my desk. It is qute high but she loves it. I have put a chid's pillow on this favourite spot of hers and she spends hours up there. They also do pick rather uncomfortable looking spots and they like to walk on rather narrow edges. Go figure.
