Sub-Titles

Whats your take on Sub-Titles?
Its extremely difficult to say if they are required or not.. Maybe like everything else.. Sub-Titles also has it's own pros and cons..
They mean to be very useful in many many cases.. Like if people are sleeping around you.. and you cant watch a movie at high volume.. then you can have the volume low.. and just go through the titles during those 'really soft' speeches..
Many movies.. if you don't understand the original language.. or the actor's accents.. then you can again go through the sub-titles to understand what the speech really meant..
One of the negatives I feel is that it really distracts you from the movie at times.. You cannot entirely concentrate on the movie and miss out on many scenes from the movie.. You cannot enjoy it to the whole..
Same thing happened to me sometime last week.. I was watching a movie.. Usually when the sub-titles are present.. I immediately put them off.. or I eventually land up only reading the titles and not watch the movie.. This time.. instead of putting them off.. I got a little carried away.. and continued reading the titles.. before I knew it.. I had watched the entire movie by only reading the titles and listening to the sounds.. I must admit it was a fast paced movie.. and so I had lots to read.. but on a whole.. I was so completely lost in reading that I forgot that I was watching a movie..
That night I just felt like my passion for reading had re-ignited through this 'creative' reading method!!

I don't mind subtitles, I am a fast reader so I hardly notice I am reading, plus as an avid reader as well as movie watcher--I actually see books in my head like a movie. I also watch a lot of anime and many times the Japanese voicing are better and the subtitles are closer to the original content than the dubs.

Thats true.. In cases of foreign films.. The dubbing really ruins it all.. The problem is they usually dub with local people so the accents often don't match.. In those times.. Its always better to put the sub-titles on.. Thanks,

Personally, I'm quite fond of subtitles. Sometimes it's just hard to understand what the actors in a movie are saying, either they speak too softly or too quickly or they have a heavy accent or whatever. When this is the case I can just turn on the subtitles and enjoy the movie. For me, I don't think it detracts from the movie itself because I don't rely on the subtitles for the entire thing, just the parts that are hard to understand.

Thats nice.. for me.. Well I must admit that I don't know how to watch movies.. Everytime I put the sub titles on.. I feel that I have to keep reading and forget that I can understand what they are saying but still I continue reading..
After sometime.. Ill stop reading... and then listen to what everyones saying.. and its always easy to get.. but once I start reading.. I cant make myself stop.. :(:( lol

as long as the translation's accurate,i don't mind them.
i've watched movies where i understood the original and they weren't even close as to what they were posting as subtitles.it was almost like they re-wrote the script.

Viewing subtitles while watchin movies has it's own merits and demerits....my opinion is that you must enable subtitles only if the movie's dialogues are hard to understand coz of excessive background noise e.g while watching a war movie like Saving Private Ryan...otherwise subtitles are a distraction...I forget about the movie and keep reading the subtitles especially if there are many dialogues...which I see also happened to you...
