Well, it's a good idea to defragment your hard drive at least once a month. It's also a good idea to scan for viruses and spyware every month. Make sure you don't keep your computer on all the time. Shut down or put your computer in hibernate when you are not using it.

Hmmm, seriously? Don't abuse it. Buy a good RAM module that will not break at certain circumstances. Turn off your computer regularly. Defragment once in a while. Check for viruses and spywares/malwares. Uninstall those programs that you don't need. Never buy small form factor computer as it is a pain in the you-know-what to upgrade or fix it. Buy a large enough hard drive and always have a backup. Keep a ghost backup of your best OS installation complete with configurations so that when you need a fresh install you can just reformat-copy ghost. Never touch the BIOS configurations when you have no idea what to do with it. Buy a large enough pendrive and use a program to make it as cache memory, that way your RAM resources will not be overexerted and your HD's virtual memory page will not be eaten up. As soon as those huge Solid State Hard Drives appear, upgrade, wahehe it's faster than HDDs. Don't touch the ICs directly with your hands, touch a metal first. You can fry them simply with static electricity.
To sum it up, never use the computer if it's exceeding the performance level, especially at a long duration. It destroys the RAM module, kind of like not really break it, but destroy the chips making it return wrong memory addresses. That's the worst story in my history of computing, bringing my already horrible Dell with 512mb down to 256mb RAM, and it's now slower than my custom PC with 128mb RAM.
All of these are from personal experiences, some are fiction, but I hope it helps just a TINY little bit.

For a ghost back-up, you need to have a 3rd party software installed. A good one would be the Seagate discwizard, as I'm using that one, and it's for free. You must have a spare hard drive, a blank one preferably. And then by using ghost, you copy excatly what's on the other hard drive. So if it has an OS, you can do a ghost backup. It's what my professor do when installing OS on multiple computers in the computer laboratory.

Like what they have said. I Defrag disk clean up my computer. Delete old files that you do not use or no use to you. Don't take them as souvenirs or remembrance. Anyway you can save it all in CD. Delete pictures! That's what I do! My computer has its own mini electric fan so that it will not get too hot. Specially the weather here is warm. I have my CPU and monitor covered when I go to sleep. There is a rat in my room! I would kill that rat I saw it one time climbing one of the cable of my computer! Its purpose is also to lessen the dust. And most important thing to me! Don't watch too much p 0 r n! Got it? heheheehehe!

Well, I have Mozilla Firefox, and it has been a blessing to have this browser.. I go through less problems with them. I do need to have updates added to my computer most of the times.. So, that is why, I just will stick with this browser. I get errors now and then. Such as low disk space.. But, overall,my computer performance is exceptional..

Well, it depends on the machine and the operating system you're running. I was once told that turning on a computer or turning it off was like turning on a car...its hardest on the motor. Never seen any proof of that though. There's a lot of myths out there.
The truth is, the longer you run your computer, the more junk its going to collect. Ideally, create a partition on your hard drive (your computer may have come preinstalled with what i'm talking about) that contains a complete system restore. Routinely back up all your important files, and when performance degrades to the point where its noticable or irratating... reformate the hard drive, reinstall all your essential programs (MS OFFICE, Acrobat, Quickbooks, whatever) and then copy your files back onto your system.
OS's always run better after a fresh install. I try to do it about every 6 months.
Hardware is a different game. Hardware, especially processors, memory, hardrives, etc, all generate heat, and they all simply wear out over time. Eventually, no matter how many times you reinstall your OS, you're just not gonna see the performance you used to. The sad truth is, its just time to upgrade. Fortunately computers are getting less expensive all the time. 500 bucks goes a long way these days.
