I remember when I was a kid my mother always made popcorn balls around Halloween time. She would cook the corn syrup and stir it into the popcorn and we would put butter all over our hands then form the balls with her. You had to be very quick or it would harden before you got them all formed. Many times you burned the beegeevers out of your hands but for the next few days you had yummy popcorn balls. Later she used marshmallows but I never liked them as well as the good old fashioned popcorn balls. So do you make popcorn balls for special occasion?

Hi. You really brought back a great tasting memory. I used to make them with my children sometimes. But, alas, they're adults now. I loved eating them myself. I tried ordering them from two different but bother reputable popcorn companies; but they were terrible. To hard, and not sweet enough. I don't like them with the marshmellows either. You gave me a good idea, I might be too late for Halloween, but I will make some with my 5 year old granddaughter. She loves to do things in the kitchen with me. We could make this a fun and happy Grandmama and Granddaugher Halloween tradition. Thanks for the memory, old and new.

My mother never did anything like that for us and I just plain never learnt to do it. I'd love to try though. Sounds yummy and Oh Lord here comes another 10 pounds just thinking about it.

Oh, gosh, I remember making popcorn balls but I must say, I always thought it made a terrible mess! No, I do not make them anymore and I probably haven't made them in 30 years or more.
There is a popcorn cake that I make occasionally on Halloween. It mixes up with lots of yummy stuff with the popcorn, then you pack it into a bundt cake pan to shape it, then flip it out onto a plate. People have a fit over it but you really need an electric knife to cut it nicely. It's fun to make and tastes pretty yummy. I don't know if I'll make one to take to work this year or not. I guess we'll see.
But you sure did bring back memories of hot and sticky popcorn balls and pans that wouldn't come clean for a week!

Oh my goodness girl! You brought back SO many memories. My mom used to do the very same thing. I think it is just too easy to go out and buy, buy, buy. Sad too cause those popcorn balls were so good!

Sorry I rarely eat popcorn in any form. It sounds painful burning your hands to make it. Hope you enjoy it.

I've never made popcorn balls nor ever eaten them. I have seen them sold prepackaged at Walmart. Are they good? I really don't want to burn my hands making them. Maybe one of my friends will make some and then I can try one!
Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

I know that there are regions of the country that make them more than others, but honestly, as a kid, I HATED getting popcorn balls. I didn't like them, wouldn't eat them and they were just something that I threw away or out to the birds (who I'm sure appreciated them far more that I did). Which is really funny because popcorn is pretty much my favorite snack. But, I only like it with butter and salt (and maybe covered in white chocolate, which I discovered this past Christmas). When I lived in Utah, if it was sweet, it was made by virtually everybody! But, here in NJ, hardly anyone makes anything like candy or candied treats. Cakes and pies, yes. But, they don't do as well in your Trick or Treat bag.

I used to eat them when I was a little kid, but I never made them. My mother has never been one to make fun treats like that.
Since I don't have any kids yet, I haven't had the occasion to make these.

Good times we make them and really don't eat alot of them give most away to friends. It was just making them that was fun. This year we mite make them but not to sure when. I hope you have a nice day. Your friend onlydia.

I use to love popcorn balls. My mother never made them and neither have I but have had the old fashioned ones that were delicious. As time has gone on, I think so many people don't hand out candy or treats made from home. To be honest, I never did let our kids eat any homemade treats unless I knew exactly where they came from. Times have changed so much.

Jillhill, you just created a HUGE wave of memories hit me! When we were a kid, we'd always make sure to hit our school's superintendent's house. His wife always made popcorn balls to pass out. (the ONLY house we were allowed to take homemade treats from!) She would make her different colors by using Jell-o as the flavoring.
My grandma was creative and made "Trix balls." You guessed it, instead of popcorn, she'd use that fruity cereal Trix (It WAS made for kids after all!) What an ooey gooey mess, but all of kids loved getting our hands in it and help make our own yummy treats!
Hmm... you know, I don't think my kids have ever made popcorn balls. Do you have a favorite recipe you'd like to share? I think we'd prefer the syrup to the marshmallows.

My mom never make popcorn balls. We usually buy it at the mall everytime we go shopping. One thing that my mom usually cook before was banana cue. I really love it and everytime she prepare that for us it really made my day happy. That is the food that i missed eating now that i am far from my family.

No but we did make one of those construction paper garlands together when the kids were small. We had a ball doing it.
