i've been staying in front of the computer for atleast 3 hours a day straight more often now. i noticed that sometimes i can see little red dots flying around in my vision. well, i am a person with a "20-20" (perfect) vision. and i am afraid that my eyes could be damaged by staying for so many hours working in a computer. well, in my previous job, i have my own computer but i don't get to spend that much time with it since most of my tasks are paperworks.

Yes, it does cause eye strain. Before I used computers on a daily basis I did not need to wear glasses. Then, I developed near-sightedness as a result of daily computer use. One day I could see across the room to the sign in board at work. I visited the optometrist and he told me that computer use had caused me to become near-sighted.
After that I have had to wear glasses while driving as I cannot read the street sign names any more. It just makes my vision sharp again so it is not fuzzy anymore.
Have a nice day and happy myLotting!!!

Since young, I've had "20-20" vision and I've never had to wear spectacles. When I started work in my 20's, I joined an IT organization, so my work was done mostly on the computer. Each day I will spend at least 8 to 10 hours looking into my workstation in the office, and when I get home, I still spend some time on my home computer. I've done that for 20+ years, and all this time, my vision was still great. So I'm not sure if working on the computer for long hours really damage one's eyes. I guess that may occur if one stares for prolonged periods into the computer screen. For me, I try and relax, sit back far enough so that I don't have to really stare into the screen, and once a while I will look away and stare out of the window into the distance. That helps my eyes relax, and that probably helps to keep my eyes away from damage.

Yes it will damage your eyes!
1) Your eyes have muscles to control their focussing. Like all muscles they need exercise. Hence if you focus entirely on one place for hours on end it will hurt your eye muscles and likely to cause eye strain. If your computer is by a window, every few minutes you should look out the window and change the focussing. This exercise will prolong the life of the muscles! Otherwise, like me, you'll end up needing glasses to focus on reading/computers and give your eye muscles a rest.
2) If you have a cathode ray tube type monitor you can affect your eyes and body with the radiation. Since you are pregnant you shoul dbe using a LCD flat screen monitor. in Sweden I believe pregnant women are not allowed to use CRT monitors for fear of miscarriage or other damage to unborn baby!
Happy Mylotting but everything in moderation!

If you're using LCD screen, the radiation is not that strong but you need to be in a brightly-lit room since it tends to be slightly darker than normal CRT. Try to look elsewhere after 1 - 2 hours staring at the screen. That should relax your eyes for a while. That's why I normally drink a lot of water in office. :D I'll be forced to go to the washroom. :D

Staying too long in front of the computer would stress your eyes. On the
other hand there are different methods you could use to lessen the stress of your
eyes. Personally I put cold packs in my eyes in this way my eyes could relax much faster. It was recommended by my friend doctor.

While computers have no known harmful effects on eyesight, computer users do often
complain of eye related symptoms such as eyestrain, headaches, fatigue, dry eyes, and
difficulty focusing, These symptoms (Computer Vision Syndrome - CVS) however are
caused not by the computer screen itself but rather by the conditions surrounding the
computer screen, such as poor lighting or improper placement of computer equipment
and computer furniture. In some instances, a pre-existing eye problem may be the cause.

Hi I just attend an eye care seminar. One the effects of prolonged use of computer is Computer Vision syndrome or (CVS) It is a group of eye and vison related problems that result from prolonged compueter use.
Most of the common sysmtoms assiociated with Computer Vision syndrome are:
1. Eye strain
2. Headaches
3. Blurred Vision
4. Dry eyes
5. Neck and shoulder pain
6. Burning eyes
7. Grainy feeling
8. Photophobia
9. Muscle Spasm
These symptoms may be caused by
1. Poor lighting
2. Galre on the computer screen
3. Improper viewing distances
4. Poor Seating Posture
5. Uncorrected vision problems.
For every 20 minutes of sustained viewing, it is advisable to rest for 20 seconds and looking at an object which is 20 feet away (when applicable). Blinking also helps. When we continously stare at the computer screen, we blink less. Also

I think older monitors were more apt to tire, or damage your eyes. I remember the old monichrome monitors that were black, with either orange, white or yellow letters. I used to get terrible headaches using them, but had to as part of my job. Newer monitors, especially the LCD ones, are much easier on the eyes. It's also nice to be able to adjust the brightness and contrast for less eye strain.
It's not a bad idea to get up and walk around at least once an hour, while you're on the computer. That's not only good for your eyes, but good for your body too.

I was using computer for more than 10 hours a day from 5 five years. I haven't noticed such things happening. I was using faltron and LCD monitors. I don't think it was happening because of your monitor. Try to meet a eye specialist. It will be helpful. If you believe strongly because of monitor, then use anti-glare glasses.

Thats good. I don't think working with computer for just a 3 hours will effect your computer as most of the software engineers and computer specialist works on cumputer for most of the day and to atleast to a minimum of 30 hours a week. Happy to have your comment.

I'm using computers for around 15 years now. And my sight is at its best. However, my mom is nearsighted since birth and my father is farsighted since his 30ies.. Maybe I'm the golden mean :D However, I had some problems with my sight in my youth. I used to look like a vampyre once. Red eyes and stuff.. But then suddenly it all passed and no problems since then. You never know... Still I do suggest you take a visit to a doctor. Red/black flying dots could mean that your retina has problems. This could even result in blindness. Good luck!

Reminiscing my gaming days, I think I spend 6 hours everyday in front of the computer and I'm a bookworm as well. Sometimes my eye gets blurry and worse I get headaches. Fortunately, I still have 20/20 vision and I strongly believe that it is due to my daily diet wherein I always eat vegetables everyday.

I think everything that we do in life and especially that it is our health that is concerned is that I am almost in the computer to the whole day but I am so glad that my eyesight was still fine until this time at my age and I do not think that it is the first reason to make our eyes damage......

Yes, it is 100% true.. Look, the effect of it works after a week, try staying on your computer a long time, perhaps 5 to 8 hours a day, then try to read on a book, or a small signage far away. Then you'll see the truth, your eyes become weak.

yes it true. staying in front of your computer for too long, can damage your eyes. have you never noticed how achy your eyes become after, say, 2-3 hours of working on the computer? also, your head might start hurting too. when there is a problem with your vision, your headache will be the first symptom to indicate it.
so, if you have a job/hobby that forces/compels you to work at your computer for hours on end, then i advice is that take a 5 minute break after every half hour. it helps, trust me. the same advice goes for reading also. and i dont give advice if i am not sure about it, so take it from me...

staying in front of the pc for a long time can be really bad to ur eyes since u put alot of pressure on ur eyes.. the best thing u can do is always take a break maybe after 1 hour or 2 hours.. give rest to ur eyes since they r one of the most precios organs in our body.. i hav recently got a job where i hav to work on the pc .. so i try to take breaks in between. it helps me alot. first i used to sit on the pc for a long period without takin breaks. and my eyes used to pain alot at the end of the day.. then i went for a check up to a eye specialist and she told me to take breaks as often as possible.that advice really helped me .. so please do take care of ur eyes..
