I am one of the culprits of of sending request to people I think are attractive, popular, or fun. I do have old and newer friends on my list as well as distant relatives and family, but I have more people on my list that I don't necessarily know... Since I'm gay that has a lot to with it, ever since the Internet became mainstream gays have used social sites like facebook to network and find people that live and think the way they do. Especially for those who live in more isolated areas they get to find other gays on the opposite side of the planet or right around the corner that are possibly gay as well. And once you meet others to who feel and live the way you do that can make you feel a whole lot less alienated and and depressed. And that's important.

I do because I play the Blood games series, so I need more people in my party. I keep them on a separate list though, so I don't get any stalkers.

Yes actually I play on this application, "Mob Wars", on Facebook. For that I needed more members to increase the strength of my "mob" so I added ~400 people who posted on the recruiting boards that I don't know but kept them on a seperate list so once they accepted the invitation I deleted them! I'd rather not have identity theft strike me.

I typically add everyone who sends me a request, unless the person sending a request appears to have created a fake profile. I view facebook as a social networking tool, where I can keep in touch with folks that I otherwise would have lost contact with. That random girl that I met at a party in high school or that random Jesuit I met in Lourdes, France are all part of my online network. And we now have the capability of getting back in contact easily and picking up right where we left off. As for people who I never met, I add them. If they've expressed an interest in me, I figure it wouldn't hurt to get to know them.

I won't deny it. When I first joined Facebook after my college 'joined' the site in 2005, I was part of the 'add every random person you see' craze that seemed to go on. It did die down over time and these days, I don't. The only people that I do add are people that I know.
