Do you back and get it?

On my way back home from a doctor appointment today, I picked up my mom and we went through the drive thru at Taco Bueno. When we got back to her house we discovered part of her order was missing. Both of us were annoyed with ourselves for not checking the sack before we pulled away. I wanted to go back and get the full order since it had been paid for. It was right on the receipt. She didn't want to mess with it. Which do you think you would do? Surely some of you have had this happen. I tried to call them but the phone number they give is actually their fax number.

It depends on what in the order is missing. If it is actually the main part of someone's meal, then yes, we'll go back. But if it is a side order that can be done without then we just call them, note the mgr's name on the receipt and take it to them the next time we go. This just happend to us and the number on the receipt was not local, we just got out the phone book and called.

I totally agree with you. If it is small I normally over look it. My mom went back and got hers because it was the main part of the meal. After their phone number was wrong I looked it up on line and they didn't even have a number listed. That is pretty weird.

Hi ambiepam! That drives me nuts! I would probably go back if it wasn't that far! I almost always will check my order before leaving. I do not trust those places. They always get it wrong especially when you go through the drive thru! Since I don't have a car it is rare that I am with someone with a car and do this, but I always tell the person I am with to check the order before we pull away to far to go back. I have learned this over time. Those drive thru windows are known for screwing up the orders. Oh, what am I saying! They screw them up even in the damn places! I don't know how many times I have had to go back up on the line to get my orders fix at McDonalds or Taco Bell or somewhere! So I have learned it's better to check then get home to find out that you're missing most of what you paid for!

I don't know why this time my mom and I didn't check. We both thought about it, we should have actually done it. I know fast food workers don't make much, but I think some of them really take pride in their jobs. Other people though, based on some of my own former friends, don't seem to care and are just there passing the time and complaining through it all. I wonder if it is those kind of workers that are responsible for the screw ups.

I don't think that they would have done anything about it. Once you leave their store and their parking lot, there's nothing they can do. They would have come up with so many excuses to why they couldn't refund or give you back your order. My dad used to work as a manager at fast food restaurants, and there were some people that would come back 20 minutes later saying they forgot their food when in fact they didn't. That's why they usually ask you to check your bag before you leave to make sure you have everything. I do wish you luck, though!!

My mom went back and got it. I've had that happen so many times. Sometimes I catch it before I get home and turn around. They've always corrected the mistake though. Half the time they are waiting with the food they forgot to put in the bag. So half the time they realized their mistake after we already left. I don't think I've ever gone back and they refused to give me the missing food. Sometimes though, like if it is a 89 cent taco, I just forget about it. But if it is a big item I'll usually go back. I like the fast food drive thrus that have checklists on their bag. I can see on paper how they went through every step from order to the drive thru window in making sure the order was correct. I think that is pretty cool.

People are different. Some are hornest and some are really sly. But I think most people needn't cheat on such a small stuff.

If you can't get through to them by phone, yes I would go back for it and raise a stink too. You paid for it and with things the way they are every dollar counts. I hate that people today at those places are so careless. Most of them work there cause they can't get better jobs, so they do what they have to, but what ever happened to Pride of a job well done, of paying attention to things. This sucks in this day and age that people dcn't care. So I would go back and raise a stink, if they didn't do anything but fill your order, I would not go there again. People should be held accountable for the work they do.

I do feel badly that they work low paying jobs, and they do in fact work their tails off (most of them I assume, but some places are consistently inept. I try to avoid them, and I try to always check my order, but with people behind me I tend to want to get out of the way and let them get their own food. But you are right. If we just would take pride in our work, in whatever kind of work we do, I think not only would customers be happier, the workers would see themselves work their way up higher in their place of employment. I mean people can advance in fast food. Managers, assistant managers, there is room to grow if a person takes pride in their work. Thanks for the good answer.

Glad you got sorted out. Everytime I go to drive throughs my order is wrong. I now hold up the line of traffic and sit and check it, much to the annoyance of staff, but maybe if we all did this, they would get it right.

Very true. And I tend to like places that look in the bag before handing me my food. Then they catch it and I don't have to.

This has happened to us on a few occasions now we don't put away from the window without checking first it might make it inconvenient for others but when they get a order wrong to makes it inconvenient for me..Less hassle in getting your order fixed as well since they won't think you are just saying it to get free food.

It is always good to go back and fix the problem. It may improve the service for next customers. I always try to fix order mistakes. Sometimes gasoline cost me more than money back but this is the only way to improve service for all of us.....

That is what my dad says. He tells me the manager of the place would want to know so they can keep their service from getting shoddy. He says if a person goes back and is nice about it there is no reason not to let the place know. And I think you and he are right. If a place is going to improve, we have to let them know the things they need to improve upon. And that means making them aware their service staff sometimes are careless.

It the place is only walking distance away... then i will surely go back and get the forgotten item... but if it is far away... then i would just forget it... or just go back the following day... i think those counter people sometimes intentionally let a package or two slip... and i hate it when they do that...

Urggg.... that is so annoying isn't? Yes, I have had this happen to me many times. I know the answer to what I would do and it is completely dependent on what my mood is at the time. I have had a similar problem with my local grocery store. I can't tell you the number of times I have noticed a missing item that didn't make into my bags, yet showed up on my receipt. For some reason, I always returned for those items feeling more like it was something I purchased and deserved to have. For some reason, when it is fast food, I tend to have the fleeting thought that I didn't need it anyway.

That is a good way to look at it. I should do the same and think how I saved myself some calories. But with money so tight I always tend to think, hey, no one is scamming me out of my 2 dollars! LOL, ridiculous, but I get so anal about that these days. (Her item though was more than 2 dollars.)

I know when I worked as a manager at Taco Bell our regular line was hooked up to the fax machine, so if we could not get to the phone in time the fax machine would pick up. I would try calling back at a slower time. I would not have turned around to get the missing item unless I was still really close by. Other wise I would call and let them know what was missing out of your order. 99% of the time they will replace the missing item and give you another menu item free of charge. I would also keep the receipt. Most of the time they do not ask for it, but I would keep it just to be on the safe side.

Have you noticed big chains of fast food restaurants have this happen the most? It seems independent drive thru places, or mom and pop restaurants with drive thrus don't have the same problem. I wonder if it is because the big chains have so many customers they don't feel they have the chance to check...

I don't drive and my mom goes to tim hortons everyday to get me a coffee. On a few ocassions he has also gotten me the chili meal.Well i couldn't tell you how many times she was given cream in the coffee and not milk like she asked for.Now for the meal.the bun was always missing. My mom is 70 years old and i called them and told them what was happening. The lady at tim hortons knew right away who we were because my mom or both of us are there around 2 times aday. She apologized and told me to come in the next day and she would fix me up.the next day i was given a dozen of free do-nuts and an extra large coffee[with milk in it].I know it was only a bun but whats the chili without the bun[lol].I haven't yet had a problem since with my orders.

Grrrr. that drives me crazy. We do not go back and get it because it is 15 miles from us one way. We do call and tell them though and make sure to get it the next time around.

Well, it would really depend on what was missing and how far the place was from where I was. As a rule, if it's close enough, I would go back and get it even if it is a small thing. Just because. I mean I know everyone makes mistakes, but it doesn't matter that I have to take them quietly :) ON the other hand, if the place was far I wouldn't bother, but I would be really p*ssed specially if I there wasn't enough food for what it was intended. Furthermore I would have picked up the phone book and look for the number and call. Maybe they would start paying more attention. I confess that we all should check everything once we get it, and I sometimes do, but there are many others that I forget.

Heck ya, I go back and get it! I paid for this food so why wouldn't I go back? Like you, I get mad at myself for not looking before pulling away, but isn't it their job to get the order correct? It's funny, whenever I look in the bag, the order is right. It's when I don't look that it is usually wrong. Talk about ironic! LOL This happened to me just the other day. I had gone to Jack In The Box's drive thru with my youngest son. I just assumed that the order was right and drove away from the drive thru window. I was only a few feet away when I thought I better look, just in case. And when I did part of my order was missing. I was just about kicking myself in the rear for not looking in the bag while I was still at the window. I told my son that we'd have to go inside to get it. I had to unbuckle him from his car seat, grab the bag of food along with the receipt, and we walked into the restaurant. Fortunately there wasn't a line of customers and I was able to get the food that they forgot to put in the bag quickly. Then it was back to my vehicle and I buckled up both my son and I and we were on our way. It was a bit hassle, especially with having groceries in the back, but it all ended well, or at least well enough. I always tell myself to look, but sometimes I feel a little guilty for taking extra time to do this, especially if the customers were held up behind me because my order took longer than usual.

Amber, what was missing? I will bring it right over.... :) I check the bag before leave. However, there was a time when I didn't and was in your situation. I looked up the phone number, called the restaurant and told them what happened. They said that next time I come in to bring the receipt, and they would make it right.

Oh yes, this has happened to me too. I am sure it has happened to everyone at some time or other. I always check the bag now before I pull away from the fast food place. I don't trust them anymore since it has happened so often. I know how you feel, but it isn't worth it to go back if you live too far from the restaurant. But if you live close by, then I would suggest to go back because these companies have to know that they can't keep doing that. Can you even guess how much money they are making off of ripping people off? I am not saying they did it on purpose but for everyone that is shorted on their order puts more money into their pockets.

It is so annoying when that happens, we have had it happen to us before. Usually for us it happens when we order a takeaway to the house, the amount of times we have waited over forty minutes for food only for it to come and there be loads missing, my hubby always phones them up to get the rest. The best one was the time we ordered and hubbys chips n cheese was missing, he could not be bothered to chase it up and so had some of mine instead, we finished our food and about 20 minutes after we had finished they fetched the missing part of the order!
