I have been trying hard not to turn the furnace up very much...but as of tonight it's going up two degrees. Unless I am running around the house I am freezing my behind off! I'll find a different way to be conservative! Are you keeping the temp lower on your furnace this year to avoid those nasty higher bills?

I always keep mine cooler in the winter and not just because of the bills. I love to sleep when it is cooler whether it is in the winter or summer. If it gets too cool for me during the day I can just put more clothes on. It is still no where near heater time here though.

I sleep in the buff and do not even like a thick blanket.
Mine is set at 70 most the winter.
Mostly because of dad getting cold really easy.
Otherwise it would be at about 65 all winter if I had my way.

Yes I have not turned my heat on yet. And yes I'm cold and it is 60 in my house. The younger men of the house are whinning about it being to cold. I told them well, Iwill turn the heat on if you pay the bill. Well, needless to say the heat is still off. They are waiting for me to cave in. OK not this year until I can't take it anymore. I'm going out to buy me long underwear and wool socks. Them young men think I will give in to them. No way not now. It's war and don't ever tell a woman she will give in before you on something so easy. Yes I'm cold as all heck but sitting here in t-shirt looking all warm. I wish they would go to bed. . I'm still not turning heat on. cash first. Your friend onlydia.
PS wish me luck I'm cold......

Our gas bills are not very high in this house and it's a big one. We have 3 floors to heat. I've had the heat on for about 2 weeks but it's set on 64 degrees. It's very comfy in here right now. I am always cold and my husband is always warm. I closed the vent in our master bedroom so he wouldn't be hot. I can cover up and keep warm. I am so cold in this room when on the computer since the vent isn't open. The house was built with the vent in here closed and it would take major repairs to open it up.

I just pulled out my down comforter Saturday. It keeps me really warm...and then I have to get up in the morning and Brrrrrr.
I've kept the thermostat at 71 since Saturday. It rarely goes on because the downstairs stays pretty warm. My room, however, is over the garage so it gets pretty cold. I also wear socks and flannel or fleece to bed so I don't freeze my tush off when I get up. Anyway, it's all good once I get that cup of morning coffee in me.. I've gotta say, the worst part is the toilet seat in the morning when the heat hasn't been on all night. Yikes!

We have electric heat, so I have only been turning it on in the rooms we really need it in. I usually just turn it up long enough to get the chill out of the air and turn it back down. It has been getting fairly cold at night(40-50's), but during the day it has been getting up close to 70.

Hi Jill. It sounds like you have to do what you must. I know it's tough when the bills are high, yet you are cold. As to me, I have a stove and the heater. We saved money last year and will again this year by starting the main heater first thing in the morning. We only leave it on enough to take the bite out of the air. I like it cold at night with blankets. I sleep better. We have a pellet stove that runs all of time. That keeps it just enough to not be cold. We turn that off only at night. That helped us.

Sounds like you have it covered! I always wondered about those pellet stoves and now they have this new heater that is intense I think....I thought about looking into that one. I do like it cold to sleep too...with flannel sheets on and a bunch of comforters.....

Sorry to hear you've been cold in your house. I used to hate that. But unless I was cleaning or really moving around, I'd stay pretty cool in the house during fall and winter when we lived up north. I'd wear sweats, sweatshirt, sweaters, extra thick socks with my flannel slide slippers, you name it.
Look at it this way, because of the days you did leave the furnace turned down, you saved money. Yes, there might be days you need to crank it up, but still, on the days you turned it down (or the hours), you still saved something.
Our air conditioning is running right at this very moment. We're still running in the 80s on most days. Today, we have a "cold front" and it's in the 70s. Isn't that crazy?

I finally turned on my heaters today. I have electric heat in the townhouse I rent. I prefer that over the forced air, because I can have better control over what rooms to heat, and not need to worry about it being perfectly balanced throughout the house.
Other than keeping the windows and doors closed, I don't have many other means of being more energy efficient when the heaters are on. I don't know the exact room temperatures, but it's comfortable in the winter when wearing long sleeved shirts and long pants.

hi jillhill (funny name)...it's hard to keep up with the temperature going up and down. just when my sister couldn't take the cold any more she'd turn the heat up and then it warmed up outside. been having a crazy october here in missouri. but don't want to complain cause it's been the nicest one in years.

i've been trying not to turn the heating on and leav it as late as possible but i just had to give in it was so cold last week that jec came round for a brew and was sat with a blanket over her. Heatings on but i've set it lower and only have it on at morning and tea. The bill will probably still be rediculous but i can't type with numb fingers lol

The higher bill is not the concern for me. I just refuse to admit defeat yet. Mr. Winter you have to do a little worse than this to get me to turn on the heat.

Ours in on. It was 30 degrees this morning up here in Minnesota. We been careful, though, and only recently started using it. We plan to be careful this winter to cut back a bit.
We were recently watching a PBS show on Jimmy Carter. When he was running for president in 1976, he was advocating keeping your thermostats at 55 degrees! I can't imaging it being that cold in the house. It is cold at 60 degrees.

Haha that's how it works in my house too. I guess buying blankets or everyone sleeping in the same room is a lot less expensive that turning up the furnace. I personally hate sleeping in clothes(Like full pajamas) so I have to use a lot of blankets. I think tons of people are trying to keep the furnace either off or down in order to save money. Money is hard to come by these days...

i don't have a furnace in my house... i only use heater in my house whenever it is necessary... if i feel really too cold and i need to use the heater, then i will use it... otherwise, i will just bear with the cold as much as i can to cut down on the electricity bill... usually i and my hubby will make hot drinks like hot tea or hot chocolate to keep our body warm... take care and have a nice day...

Good morning jill. It is cold today in my house to, but I did not turn on the furance yet. I am sitting here on mylot with socks on my feet and my feet are still cold. It is rainny oustide today and very windy all the way to 45 mph and right now its 45 outside. If I get any colder I have to turn on my furnace, but I hate to cause of the bills. I hate the winter. I need to go and make myself a cup of hot coffee just to warm up. I allready had 2 cup an hour ago.

lol! we have finally started to cool down enough to turn OFF the Air Conditioner at NIGHT! forget about the heater, that wont be for another month at least i think. but as soon as 10am or so rolls around, we are turning the a/c back on again until about 9pm at night. then we open up all the doors and windows trying to let some of the cooler and fresher air in!
i am so happy that summer is FINALLY over!

yup, i agree with you. we finally turned on the furnace a couple of weeks ago but we refuse to turn it up more. we have everyone wear sweaters, i make soup for supper, we put the oven on to make bread, that sort of thing. i guess no matter what, you end up paying for it!

I just hate when i have to turn the furnace on.I have been turning it on in the mornings just to take the chill out of the house.I have radiator heat in my house and when you turn the heat off the rads stay warm for along time.I don't use heat going to bed,I just use extra comforters. The price of oil is so high-you have to try to cut back and its terrible.I hate being cold.
