I say that Led Zeppelin is/was the best band of all time, and not just that they are number one, but because they are so much better than whoever is number two! In that frame of context, each member is the best at their position. There are many guitarists more technical (Eddie VanHalen, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Randy Rhoades) but Jimmy's greatness (to me) comes in his ability to write, compose, and play with "feeling"...I just still get goosebumps when I hear one of my fav guitar parts from him! To me, that makes him best

Jimmy Page is sure one of the influential guitarist of all time. He got his own signature and own sound. But he's quite common. He's better known with Led Zeppelin rather than his own. With Zeppelin the sound really blends and amazing. He's one on my top 10 list. Other you can check is Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I agree with all of what you said, except he is anything BUT "quite common" He has several innovative playing techniques that other "common" guitarists don't touch, like his use of multiple tunings, his playing a theremin, his violin bow solos, mandolin playing...etc. Those areas he dabbles in make his quite unique, which is the opposite of common!

I agree that he is unique in his own ways, but I think the original poster meant more that Page's riffs are fairly common. He does that straightforward three-chord rock n roll along the lines of AC/DC, etc.
Still, I don't agree with that so much either, as Zeppelin in particular has numerous songs that transcend the basic, three-chord rock n roll sound and structure. While a lot of their songs sound similar (arrangement-wise, if nothing else), they sound distinctly Zeppelin. Page's guitar is responsible for that, as much as Bonham's drumwork.

I agree to Mr pinkfloyd007's post.Jimmy Page, the lead guitarist of led zeppelin is a very good improviser. He can play the lead of same song in many ways. There are many versions of hits like Stairway to Heaven,Whole Lotta Love and Dazed and Confused. It is amazing to hear him play for hours.Led Zeppelin became much popular during the seventies mainly because of his guitar playing.I haven't seen a better guitarist than Jimmy Page.

Yes, I have 20 or more versions of 'Stairway'(all but one live), and no two are played the same, yet the "feel" of the guitar parts (especially the solo) is always there. Jimmy is amazing in that way, like each song has its own life! I could (and do sometimes) listen to him play for hours.

No, i dont believe him to be the best guitarist. But he sure as hell is one of them, and he definetly changed the way guitar is played, his techniques, styles and sounds are mind blowing but to every well known guitarist there are probably several with the same capabilities. but man can he play or What? he is one of my favourite idols!
