With Christmas just around the corner, I am looking at updating my computers, and was wondering would I be better going for a Laptop, which seem as good as desktop machines nowadays, or stick with a traditional Desktop Machine.
What do you Think ?

It depends on how you will use it. If you are a university student like me :), I suggest you to get a laptop which is more convenient to carry around to seminars and so on.
But obviously, desktops are more powerful. If you want to play current big games with all video settings of "High", it's better to buy a DIY desktop.
By the way, my laptop is SONY VAIO FZ15,bought 1 year ago, it can play most of current games e.g. Call of Duty 4, Assasin's Creed with medium effect. So, a laptop may not be bad at running games.
Hope these help.

It has surprised me when looking around at how powerful laptops have got nowadays, which unfortunately just makes the whole decision process a lot harder.

I do find desktop computers a little more comfortable to use when compared to a laptop. Both are brilliant and are packed with all the mod cons so there's not much to choose between them in that respect. I do prefer the idea of the laptop though as it has the capability of being transported anywhere you want. It can even be stored away in the tiniest of places. Overheating is something you may have to watch though as laptops shouldn't be left on too long...afteral you wouldn't want to ware the battery out and burn out the computer. Read previous discussions on here before about a suitable time for a laptop to be on for is roughly upto an hour. Cooling mats can also be purchased to help the computer stay cool.

I hadn't thought of the overheating issue, as I normally have my computers running nearly all day long, so will have to bear this in mind.
Perhaps I am better sticking to a Desktop, afterall I am use to them, I like the Larger monitors and the ease of typing on the Keyboard and the Mouse, can't stand those touch screen mouse replacement thingys or whatever its called.

Know what you mean I find using my keypad too much makes my fingers very sore...friction burns or something.
Bought a little mini mouse now so I don't get this problems

I have both a desktop and a laptop. They are networked together through a router. The desktop is good for the kids to do homework and to entertain themselves. The laptop is mine. I like it because I can take it with me. I have traveled with it across the country. I have wi-fi and I only need to find a connection to be able to connect to the net. It was great to be able to share photos with my parents. I just ran them through a slide show. My parents do not have any computers. They sat at the kitchen table and saw a lot more photos than I would normally have been able to carry on the airplane. It was a good way to connect them through pictures to their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

I guess I am suggesting the laptop over the desktop because of the versatility. I think you will also be happier with a laptop.

Thanks for the response.
Its a difficult decision, with the power of laptops just getting better all the time, although it will probably based in the house most if not all of the time, I wonder if it is necessary to have the convenience of a Laptop.

It depends are you a student who rarely stays in ur dorm and dosent need a very strong computer then go for a laptop (and just for info. the stronger ur notebook is the less time it can run on a battery ) but if you want alot of space more then 1-2 terabytes then go for a desktop.

Thanks for your response, Its a difficult decision, because I can't imagine ever taking it out of the house, but there again I am only use to having Desktop machines previously, so this has never been an issue, but If I got a Laptop, and have the option of taking it out with me, then I might prefer this set up.
Decisions, Decisions, I don't Know, I just wish I could afford the Both.

I know that laptops are nice to look at and they are excellent if you want to travel whilst getting on with your computing but, I personally don't like them. There's only one reason for this! Laptops are limited when it comes to upgrading them. With a desktop there are no issues as regards upgrading. I would recommend that you go for a desktop, but that's just my view. I fancy the idea of building my own computer from scratch and I will make sure that I have enough spare pci slots on the motherboard so that I can upgrade my system in the future. Good luck. Andrew
