I need something for my daughters cough. The ingredients in her medicine are causing an allergic reaction affecting her sight. She's been off it for almost a week. Her eyes are returning to normal. She gets a teaspoon of honey at night, and propped up on pillows. What do you do? Anything work better in the day time? She is 5.

Lots of fluids first of all. Does she like tea? You could try some warm tea with honey in it.
If her cough is causing her to have a sore throat try feeding her soft foods like pudding, applesauce, popsicles, Jell-o, and soups to avoid further irritation to her throat.
If she has drainage that is causing the cough try some saline in her nose. Saline is basically salt and water. You can make your own or you can buy some over the counter. Clearing out the drainage will help her too.
A cool mist humidifier in her room might be a good idea too.

Vitamin C in high doses can have a dramatic effect in improving allergy symptoms, particularly hay fever and asthma, due to it's ability to counteract the inflamation responses that are part of such conditions. "Vitamin C is one of nature's miracles," Dr. Mandell says. Robert Cathcart MD, who pioneered the technique of taking Vitamin C to bowel tolerance, also recommends it's use for allergies. His own seasonal systom of hay fever were blocked upon taking 16 grams of Vitamin C orally during a 24 hour period, following exposure to pollen. In cases of more severe exposure, he advises that the dose of Vitamin C be increased as well. Dr. Cathcart bases his recommendations on clinical experience with over one thousand patients with allergies, the vast majority of whom gained significant relief from this approach. http://www.liferesearchuniversal.com/allergy.html

It says to wash everything down with bleach.
This link says eating bananas will help quiet a cough.. http://frugalforlife.com/natural-healthy-remedies/
Hope you find something out that helps if you do let me know my husband takes allergy pills several times a day and they don't really help and I am going to see if I can get him started on honey and apple cider vinegar which also is supposed to help with allergies.

The vapor plug ins actually help my girls with their cough also. Maybe not tons but enough to help them to sleep and be comfortable. Also, if it is all reflexive cough I will give them the guaffinisin/codine or hydrocodone mix cough syrup bc it numbs the reflex in the throat that causes you to cough and helps them in the night. We don't use anything really regularly though except benedryl during colds with the other meds cause it drys up the nose which decreases the drip onto the cough reflex spot... Hope this helps, my daughter just got her signature fall cough yesterday so she's home from school today and I'm starting our "routine"!

Not helpful for the young, but lemon and honey sounds similar to a "hot toddy" which some people used to think was helpful.

i find that helps me is... boil together 2 Litres (64 oz) of water, 1 lime, 1 lemon, 1 orange, and 3 cinnamon sticks. have them boil on the stove until the fruit just about separates from the peels. strain out the fruit. then drink hot or warm with honey in it (put as much honey to sweeten as you need).
i also sleep with a hot steam vaporizer. i put some Vics vaposteam in it. that seems to help.
also, make sure she's drinking plenty of fluids, especially water. this helps to break up congestion and prevents dehydration.
Try to limit her sugar and other processed foods and dairy intake while she has the cold-symptoms. They cause more mucous to build up.

I grate onion and make onion juice. To 1/4 glass of onion juice add 3/4 glass of hot water and 1 tbsp of honey. Mix in well and give it to your daughter at the hottest temperature she can bear to drink. Whenever I give my kids this, they either cough their phlegm out or it goes out in the stool. Works well for me. Good luck .

Is she coughing due to mucous? Right now I'm getting over my cold so I'm coughing up a lot of mucous. The best way to avoid that is to limit dairy intake. Dairy creates more mucous, that's why it's not a good idea to give a child with a cold any milk products.
For sore throat I use hot liquids like hot cocoa and soup.

Hello my dear ersmommy, Do you have any honey and garlic in your household. What you should do is to cut the garlic and mix it with the honey and give her a tea spoon in the mornings and one in the evenings this will help her.
