Why do people always use the Bible as a reference?

For example, I was arguing about homosexuals being allowed to adopt and my friend said they should not because homosexuality is wrong. I said, "prove it", and he said "It's in the Bible." It's so annoying. The Bible was written by human beings and translated again and again by human beings. When I tell people this, they say that it was inspired by God. When I ask them how they know that, they say because it's in the bible. How does that make sense? I could start my own religion, write a Bible, and say that it was inspired by God. That doesn't mean it's true. How does everyone know that some guys didn't just write the Bible and say that so people would listen to them? Btw, isn't it a bit shifty that only men wrote the Bible? What's up with that?

Because if you believe in GOD, then you believe in the Bible as being inspired by HIM. And if that is the case, then you look at the bible as the authority in moral and Godly living.
The bible declares the existent of God and makes Him known to all of us. That's why many of us believe in Him.
On the other hand, if you don't believe in HIM, then I wouldn't get all worked up over what you consider as being absolutely NOTHING!
If you do believe in Him, but don't believe in the Bible, then how do you know that He REALLY exists? How would you know Him? How would you know His ways and His Character?
So when you ask someone for their opinion- especially when it's in regards to moral issues, then rightly so... they point to God's word- the Bible. For there is no higher authority than God's.

Those that lack the mental fortitude to make a decision for themselves will always turn to the Bible to back them up. It is one thing to look to the Bible for personal strength and occasional moral guiding, I guess, but using it for a how-to book for life is an outdated practice. We aren't the brainless drones of the Dark Ages anymore, and some people just need to snap out of it.
As for why men wrote the Bible - historically, this is a man's world. In most cultures throughout history women are the second class citizens, lesser beings, weaker species, etc. Men held the power, women held the babies.
Although there are a few books purported to have been written by women. Of course the Council of Nicaea wouldn't have saw fit to include them in the Bible.

Unless I'm badly mistaken, the Bible is one of the oldest books around.
The Samaritan Text and a few others are older. Many forget that "man"
in that book refers to all of us at times.
In school we all have seen many books with reference materials in them.
These books are used to teach us educational things. To me, the Bible is
used to teach "moral values" to us and show us things that we need to see.
Oh, go here - http://reluctant-messenger.com/main.htm - and you may find
all the books that I have mentioned.
I can't prove anything is right or wrong! My belief system is different
and I don't rely on a man's word. My heart and conscience tell me right from
wrong.
