if you are looking for freeware only then i would suggest spybot. I must say that instead of having many programs you should have single program (internet security suit) that takes care of virus and any other malwares, to have better pc performance. I dont remember any freeware for total internet security, but bitdefender and zonealarm are the best suit avialable in commercial softwares

If you want a best free anti-virus? I go for AVG 8 Free Edition, but if you want a free professional edition? You can go always to mininova.org and search for Bitdefender 2008/9 Total Security, Mcafee 2008 Total Protectio and AVG 8 Internet Security. It a torrent download softwares and they are working fine.

Security software is one thing I tend to never, ever, EVER pirate. Trusting A/V with a random torrent download? Maybe it is just me...

Hehehe.. Maybe you're right but as far as I know. AVG 8 Internet Security and Mcafee 2008 Total Protection works on me. I have no trouble updating.

get Ubuntu and you won't need an antivirus. Ubuntu is a Linux-based operating system, and it blows Windows away. AND it's free!

be VERY careful with the antivirus popups, most (if not all) of them go by the same principle as flu shots: they infect yr computer so you HAVE to buy their software. The same goes with those "spyware suites." One of those "antivirus" popups is the reason I went to ubuntu. I made the mistake of letting somebody borrow my laptop for 10 minutes and he "helpfully" installed one of those things, by the time I checked out the hard drive it was already crawling with spyware, adware, & viruses. I've had ubuntu for about 4 months now, and not a glitch yet, no viruses, no spyware, no popups.

Hi idcoder, I think that I would recommend to use Avira antivirus or AVG Free.. but I think that the best is Avast! Antivirus Professional, it's not free but I think that it's the best above all the rest.. you should try at least the trial period and tell me what do you think.. the best way to know witch one it's the best for you it's to test all of them.. at first I thought that NOD32 was perfect but after one day of infection, I get rid of it and change it immediately!

I have used AVG for years and it has saved my bacon a few times. I will continue to use it as long as it is free. However several friends have said they actually prefer free Avast now. Even the best antivirus might miss something so you should use a free online antivirus scan like Trend's Housecall or other online scan like Panda, eTrust or even Kasperskey. Check the conditions before you do though as I am sure Housecall will remove the viruses found but Kasperkey online scan will not.

i would suggest you to use avast, it is the best free anti virus that i have used till date. avg8 would be next to avast. the best is kaspersky . it is the best anti virus. it detects most of the viruses , but it eats up lot of memory as you said . so you could go for avast free anti virus

if you are looking for free antivirus try the trial versions.in my experience every anti virus has som defects so what i do is i periodically change the anti virus so that no virus escapes:) you should use an adware finding program along with that the anti vuruses i suggest are avast,avg,mcafee,nod32,kaspersky norton is very good but it affects system performance avast has a cool feature to check virus at boot time it helps in reducing most viruses you can use adaware tools
