Hero dog risks life to save kittens from fire
SYDNEY (Reuters) – A dog was hailed as a hero on Sunday after it risked its life to save a litter of newborn kittens from a house fire, rescuers said.
In a case which gives the lie to the saying about 'fighting like cats and dogs', the terrier cross named Leo had to be revived with oxygen and heart massage after his ordeal. Fire broke out overnight at the house in Australia's southern city of Melbourne, where he was guarding the kittens.
Fire fighters who revived Leo said he refused to leave the building and was found by them alongside the litter of kittens, despite thick smoke.
"Leo wouldn't leave the kittens and it nearly cost him his life," fire service Commander Ken Brown told reporters.

Its always so cute to hear about such animals. He was definitely a hero. And its nice to know that they can be different animals, yet still care enough to help. I used to have a very large St Bernard. I also had a white pet rabbit that I let hop around the house. Those two loved each other and they would often be found with the rabbit curled up asleep next to my dog. My one regret is I never got a picture of that. I also had a hamster then who loved to roll all over the house in his exercise ball. His favorite pasttime? To chase the St Bernard in his ball. Poor dog, he just never knew what to think of a ball that chased HIM.

i read the news on the newspaper as well and i live in melbourne... yes, it is very cute and the most amazing thing for me is, this dog takes over the role of the mother's cat to look after the 5 litter while the mother herself already run away... this is a real bravery for me... and the dog deserves to be hailed hero by RSPCA after what he had done... i wish we human can learn from this dog... that is, to care and sacrifice more for our enemies or people that we don't like... if we all do this, i believe that this world will be a better place to live in... take care and have a nice day...

What a cute story... this just proves that heroisn and care for others know no bounds... and i hope the dog and kittens are all right... we can all learn a lesson from what this dog did...
That even if one considers the other an enemy... we should always set aside our differences in times of dire need...

I treat him as a dog with emotional intelligence, not caring that those were his enemies as long as he can save their lives, even risking his own.
I saw the dog on tv, and he was a small one with white color that was full of soot.
Thank you for sharing nad have a nice day!

Awww, that is sweet and rare, but it does happen..Makes me wonder though, the way my dog and cat go at each other, what would they do in a crisis???
Thanks for sharing, I love this story..

Thank you for posting this discussion. Stories like this makes me wonder why so many humans show such a lack of respect not only dogs, but all animals.
When I see people shooting wolves from out of a helicopter, it makes me cringe.
I also hate the fact that some people will kill an animal so they can mount the animals head somewhere in their house.
All animals have a place in our world and all should be treated with respect and dignity.
Hopefully this hero dog who risked his own life to save another animal will make people think twice about randomly killing other animals.

Yes, makes me wonder also. But there are really people who find pleasure in the pains of others and sepcially animals. I dont like hunters for they are those who would shot animals for pleasure and its pretty a wrong thing to do.

I saw this on Australia Pacifc Network News this morning, and it was so heartwarming. With all the bad news stories we hear everyday, it's great that the news sources can find time to air such a beautiful story. I also saw it on Fox, so maybe it got world coverage on cable networks aso.

i saw this on the news today also! and yes it made me smile, and admittedly i was fighting back a couple of tears lol!
sure seems a rare occasion when something on the news makes us smile anymore doesnt it?
Leo may not be the natural mother of those lucky to have him little kittens..but damn if he isnt a great momma anyways! and with the kittens being so young (they looked like their eyes werent even open yet!) i am so happy to hear that they all survived despite the smoke and heat! they didnt say whether all the kittens made it or not when i saw it on tv this afternoon.
see..the Beatles were right, all we need is love LOL!

It's just an amazing story heroism and survival-- Leo having behaved as a typical hero to an 'old nemises' and his extraordinary feat of survival from the 'genetic guilt' of saving an 'old foe'... Cheers to Leo may we all emulate his good deed!

I saw that on the news yesterday & it made me cry!!! What a sweet story. When I first heard it I thought the dog must be a female who had adopted the kittens. When they showed the video, he was obviously a male with a HUGE heart!!! I just wish we could hear MORE happy stories like this!!!

Awww. I'm not surprised. Even thought cats and dogs do fight (we have 2 of each, so I know), they also seem to come to love each other.
Years ago, there were two wild cats - sisters - who had kittens on the roof of our home. We'd get a ladder and bring them down and during the night, the cats would take them back again.
We finally brought the kittens inside, and one of the mommies would brave coming inside if our dogs were in the backyard. But she wasn't very healthy from living outdoors on her own.
So one of our female doggies (a Shi-tzu/poodle/terrier mix) produced milk and nursed those kittens to health. I think I have a picture of her somewhere. She was barely out of puppyhood herself when she nursed those kitties. She loved them and only gave up on them when they started getting (and using) sharp claws.
