Are you getting enough iron???

Did you know that up to 8 out of every 10 teenage girls and pre-menopausal women are deficient in iron? Did you also know most iron deficiencies go undetected because blood tests only check for anemia, the final stage in iron deficiency? I read this article about the symptoms of anemia. Of course symptoms vary depending on the level of anemia, but here are the most common: Fatigue, dizziness, headaches, cold hands & feet with brittle nails, unusual cravings. It can even lead to restless leg syndrome! Here's a link to the article: http://www.remedylife.com/general/articles/content?cid=1600&ctid=2 Here are some tips from a newsletter at remedylife to get more iron in your Diet: Eat some extra-lean red meat. The iron in meat (heme iron) is well absorbed; the iron in plant foods is not. Add meat to a stir-fry, spaghetti sauce or chili, and you boost absorption of the nonheme iron found in beans, pasta and vegetables. Cook in a cast-iron skillet. Your food will absorb iron. Eat vitamin C-rich food, such as orange juice, broccoli or strawberries, at meals. Vitamin C boosts iron absorption and counteracts some compounds (such as phytates in brown rice) that block iron absorption. Select iron-fortified foods. While their iron isn't well absorbed, such foods do add some to the diet. Drink tea and coffee between meals, not with food. Both of these beverages contain tannins, compounds that block iron absorption. Ask your doctor about supplements. A moderate iron supplement should be considered if daily caloric intake falls below 2,500 calories and serum ferritin levels below 20mcg/L. Severe deficiency requires prescription supplements.

Thank you so much for sharing this very interesting information. I am anemic and take prescription iron pills three times a day. I want to look up some more information and find out if it is hereditary, as quite a few people in my family have it. One of the reasons I do not do much research is that my sister is anemic and needs iron pills, but for some reason, she will not take them. Which is very dangerous. Every now and then I nag her about it, but she never takes them.

You are quite welcome Rosie. I was anemic once and had to take meds. I'm good now and have been for years. I think it was all that partying when I was young LOL

Well it is certainly good to know that I will not always be anemic. I thought that I would be stuck taking iron pills for the rest of my life.

The point "most iron deficiencies go undetected because blood tests only check for anemia, the final stage in iron deficiency" was a real eye opener to me! Thanks for that. I do try to eat healthy and follow many of the tips on your discussion. As for my input, having VItamin C IN ADDITION to Iron rich foods is vital too - eg. squeeze lemon juice on the leafy vegs/ orange juice with meals locks the iron in the food for absorption.

Hmm... Looks like a serious ailment if there is a lack in Iron. I guess I am taking in enough. I love to eat meat. And of late, I have been craving for a lot of meat products. Sigh... Hope I can get out of this craving soon. IT is really not helping much towards my dieting goal.

Hi kathy! It's kind of funny that you have this discussion today because I have some of these symtoms and I went to the doctor's last week and had a checkup and blood test taken. I have some of these syptoms and was sure I was anemic. Nothing showed up in my blood tests! I still have the symptoms of being constantly cold, my nails keep breaking whereas I have always had long and strong nails and I am constantly fatigued. So then what is the explaination for these symptoms? I don't know! My doctor is out of town so I will have to wait to speak with him. But, meanwhile the blood tests came back normal! He thought it could be my thyroid and it isn't that either. I asked his nurse if I could have a vitamin deficiency and she said it would have shown up in the tests so now I am baffled and want to know why I am still having these symptoms!~

Oh my gosh that really stinks. This article said something about anemia being detected but not earlier stages so maybe it is iron but not to the point of anemia. A hospice nurse once told me that doctors deal in numbers... maybe you are just really in tune with what's happening with your body. It could just be be something else. It wouldn't hurt you to beef up your diet with high iron foods, maybe it will help while you're waiting to speak to him.

Redkathy, I want to thank you for your thorough information. I've looked at a lot of sites about iron, and my daughter sent me a lot of information. However, I had yet to find information that actually told me everything in one reading. I unfortunately, have all of the symptoms, have now for quite a few months. Moreover, the doctor won't listen to me. Unfortunately, the symptoms have gotten worse to the point where I have lost a few days work. I have to wait 'til Febuary before seeing the doctor who prescribed the iron pills in the first place. I think that my biggest problem is that my body does not absorb iron like it should. I can not eat or drink anything to do with oranges, however I will try to find something that will help. One thing I had noticed was when I eat steak and eggs or fruits and vegetables it does seem to soothe the symptoms lightly. Yet I am also boderline Hypoglycaemic. Which in turn causes several other problems. The blood tests say all is well. Yet my body is slowly painfully giving me problems. Again thank you for giving us great information.

Good stuff! I think my son has low iron! Been trying to get him to eat more vegetables, didn't know about the red meat though! Great information, Taripre$

I think I'm probably ok with my iron now. Last time I had it checked and they said it was too low so I had to take iron pills along with a vitamin. It took forever for it to go up to normal.
