I don't come from a rich family so I couldn't afford expensive stuff like my rich friends. When I was a teenager I wanted to be like others and went into debts most of the time buying stuff. But I've grown out of that craze. I now choose comfort over cost. For example, I cut all my old jeans and made them into shorts, rumaged through my old clothes and found some really neat stuff.
Turning over a new leaf, I realised there's no use torturing myself over branded stuff just to get attention. It is only wasting the hard earned money parading in branded goods. What about you? Do you go for brands?

Luckily when I was a teenager it wasn't a problem. When my children were I couldn't afford to buy them and I explained why, which they accepted. They still don't buy expensve designer clothes and don't care who makes them. As long as my daughter thinks something will suit her she's as likely to buy from a charity shop as she is a fashion store!
As I was a sewing machinist and made clothes it often surprises me how shoddily made some of these high costing labels are!
As you've learnt it's not worth torturing yourself and I'm sure you'll get just as much attention without spending a fortune! You probably look good in a sack!

when I buy things, I don't even consider what the brand is. just that I like them and the price is what they are worth.
why do people care what brand a product is? the logos are on the inside (except in the case of very tacky clothes where they print the logo on the outside) so why do people care what the brand is.

I am not a label wearer, and I have never have been. I got bullied at school from the other girls because I didn't have the latest brand named clothes, shoes, bags etc. It didn't bother me to be honest. I never saw the point of buying one expensive pair of jeans when I can buy three pairs of cheaper jeans, that in my experience, generally last longer anyway.
I have very few brand named items in my wardrobe, and I plan to keep it that way. I don't want to pay the earth for a label, when it doesn't actually mean anything anyway!

Never! I like quality but not labels. I refuse to pay big money only to wear a name if I can get just as good or even better wardrope much cheaper. I think paying that much money (as some movie stars do) is throwing money away and that money can feed many hungry mouths. So I don't give a s*it if it say guccy or chanel I am not paying for someones fame. No way.

I guess they are not that important, I do shop for them a lot but mostly for the quality of the porduct not the name. I could careless who makes the clothes as long as i know I am going to get my money's worth out of them.

I am not wealthy either and I have looked at branded stuff and wondered why people bother to waste such money just for a label. When I was working I tried to dress smartly without spending too much money although my boss wished I spent more. I thought I dressed smart enough for my taste. I had a brief period of a year or two where I bought some designer clothes and they were nice but they were made in china and the seems came apart and I had to fix them. I mean for that money. What was I paying for?
Ok some of the designs were nice and the fabrics were lovely but why waste all that by getting them made in china with cheap labour. I noticed that some of the outfits I tried in the shop were coming undone. Pathetic for the money.
Nowadays I dress for comfort and I cannot afford to by any sort of label so I look for the nicest clothes I can find in my price range. In summer I wear a nice little sarong as a skirt and a tee shirt for a top and that's it. Nice and cool in the heat and perfect for around the house and yard. I only dress up now if we go shopping or go out and that is not that often.

At least you have a good sense of fashion that can compliment your taste. There is really no point in chasing for branded dresses as it will soon go out of fashion and we are left with cloths that are off season. I never really fancy goods that are made in China as the workmanship is not to my desired standard. My sister bought me a handbag from china and have only used it twice and the skin starts peeling off. The quality of goods made in china are questionable though they can look very nice and original like the branded ones.

Good for you. I, too, come from a family that didn't have a lot when I was growing up. But I have always gone for comfort inexpensive over name brands where clothes are concerned. It just never made any sense to me to spend my money and pay 2-3 times for a pair a "In" brand jeans as opposed to just plain old jeans. And now you have extra money for other things! That is the cool part when finding this out.

i dont think so it is important to take only the branded stuff as now a days we have so many other things which are far more better han a branded stuff and works more and looks good too and then why not choose that. i always buy things which really attracts me and i like it, yyes offcourse and i will look for the price it is very rare i just buy it if it is expensive too due to my like and most of the times i just look for the price and then buy it and now i am not single and i have my family and i have to control any kind of lavish habbits and i do that as end of the day saving is also required right and without savings we just cant do anything in life.

A lot of kids I went to school with had more money, especially when I got to high school. There was no way I could have all the designer clothes they did, whether I wanted to or not. I didn't like most of the preppy look that was in at the time. Being unable to afford those clothes was more of a motivation to be myself and express myself by going to thrift shops and getting things nobody else had, and putting together unique outfits with a punk or goth style. As an artist, I liked altering things and making them my own. There were always the people who laughed at me, but others respected being myself.
Now these days there are more brands that have punk or goth clothes than back then, so I'll go for those kind of brands, or ones that have more "edgy" clothes, if I am going to spend the money, but even then I almost always get things on clearance, at outlets, or still at thrift stores.

i used to patronize branded stuffs but now that i have my own flat, i've learned how to prioritize things..=) actually, it's how you carry yourself..you will still look good/ "fashionista" even if you wear generic brand of clothes.. just opt for clothes that looks good on you plus be confident wearing them..=)

Brands are silly. A couple of letters on a piece of clothing and it's suddenly worth more. Ridiculous. I buy whatever I like and can afford. Famous brand or not.
It's also like being owned by the company that made the brand. They branded you. You know, just like they do with cows. It's claiming ownership.

Hmm...nice discussion. Ya i also don't belong to a rich family. And most of the time i find it hard to buy expensive branded clothes but still i buy them. But i guess i should also try to do what u did. Its not wise to buy those expensive clothes when u can still wear comfortable clothing at a cheaper price.

Why the heck would I buy designer jeans for 20 to a hundred bucks when I can get ten, twenty pair of jeans (who cares WHO made them) plus some tops for around a buck or two (literally)?
Doesn't seem sensible to me. And no matter what I wear, people stare anyway. Some days I'll dress in something that looks completely crazy on purpose just for laughs. Now if it was the other way around, and they PAID me to wear the stupid clothing..I might consider it.
The sum of my worth is not how much expensive clothing I own.
I own no expensive clothing, and couldn't afford to anyway lmao. I hope I never do, to be quite honest.
I'm not about to wear a pair of pants because a ton of other people are also wearing it. Talk about originality, right?
...*sigh* Sorry. I'm quite vocal about this subject. I'm glad you've seen the light on this bit, dearie! Too many youngsters go crazy over expensive stuff they probably won't even be able to afford once they move out of their parents' house!

i get your point and i think that is just how many people should live right now...we all need to live frugal now a days and making out good things over used materials is a great thing to practice...i do the same most of the time...sometimes cut my old pants to make it a 3/4's jeans or shorts..some of my old t shirts which are plain ones i paint on them to make it look like a new one and sometimes i dye them..

I don’t came from a rich family and I’m not a brand conscious person though I have some branded clothes in my wardrobe. I don’t buy branded clothes just to have the attention of others. I buy it because of durability and comfort that it brings wearing them. I have branded and unbranded clothes. I don’t buy branded clothes which have large print of it’s name. If I like it I buy it no matter branded or not.

Hi zandi! I will tell you how I feel about name brands!
I personally refuse to wear anything with a label! And
I will tell you why! I don't feel that I need to pay
extra money to wear someone's name when I can get something
for less money! If someone wants me to wear their name then
they can pay me to wear it! I can find jeans that are alot
less money and for a decent quality without a name label
on it. It is such a waste of money! I have never been into
wearing things for the name. I am a bargain shopper and am
proud of it. I like to wear stylish clothes, but I will
not pay an outrageous price for them and I do get alot
of compliments on what I wear and I almost always get my
clothes and shoes on sale!

I don't know how I skipped your response with few others and honestly it is not done intentionally. Anywhere if you have the eyes of creativity and fashion anything simple and cheap can works wonders and I see you have that. It is good you know where to get stuff for good bargain.

hey zandi,
I think this s a really good topic. Personally, I'm in the same boat as you are. I have several very rich friends, who don't even look at price tags when they go out shopping, which would NEVER happen to me. I could never afford even one article of clothing that they buy let's say every week or so. I find that disgusting, because there are so many other ways you could spend your money wisely, without needing to spend a huge amount of money on clothing, that maybe you get sick and tired of really fast.
On the other hand, when I go in a store, I check out what's on sale, then, after doing that, I check to see whether the articles on sale, are from my favourite brans. I really like Diesel and Miss Sixty, because they have very unique designs and materials that they use for their clothing. If you go online, on their websites, you will have a heatattack if you check to see how much a pair of jeans goes for. It's ridiculous, BUT, if you find stuff on sale, at let's say a thrift store, or a second hand store, you get everything for roughly 10$ or under, while in store they cost 500, for the same item.
So, it's a double bladed problem. If you want brand names, go shop in a thrift store, and it's guaranteed that you'll find at least somethingt hat in store will cost tenfold that sum!
Cheers!

Oh sorry moniimo, I can't reason out why two of the replies here have missed my attention. I come back today just to find out that I missed yours. However I really appreciate your thoughts on bargain prices and would not resort to expensive brands as they are only on a circle and would soon be outdated. Well, what can we say about the well offs, they have the means and purchase anything that catches their eyes. How I too wish to be in their shoes. But wait til lady luck strikes. It will then be within our reach.
