hmmm...I really like Poppy Z. Brites writing style. I also enjoy Anne Rice, but I find her writings a bit too detailed.
Anyways, back to your question. My favourite writer for (writing style/ideas/story) is George Orwell.

I like many authors for their greatest works:
Ayn Rand: Fountain Head and Atlast Shrugged
Irwing Wallace: Most of the novels made into films with hero - James Bond
O'Henry: Well known US author for short stories
Guy Muppasant: French author for his vivid and humourous short stories.
