I have insomnia, and I was wondering about some good ideas for relaxing so I can fall asleep. What helps you fall asleep?

I was recently suffering from severe insomnia and my doctor recommended Meditation to help me relax. It's not your stereotypical meditation it's just easy ways to relax your brain. I picked up the book "Meditation for Dummies" it's really good and I think you should try that and see if it works for you too....

I keep a notebook by my bed & I write anything down that I know I have to do next day.
I do some relaxation exercises.
Open a window for fresh air.
Make sure my covers aren't too heavy & I'll overheat.. this then wakes me up.
Don't watch action movies right before going to bed.
Read for half an hour before bed.

Give your eyes a gentle massage before you sleep and prevent from eating especially chocolates and coffee before sleep. Exercising before sleeping is not advised also.

I took yoga freshman year in highschool. On fridays, we had relaxation/nap time (i know! how cool is that? getting an A for sleeping on yoga mats?!)
What we would do is (any it never failed), lay down and try to forget everything that happened during the day. Then, tense up individual muscles, holding it for about 10 seconds, then relaxing them again. Begin with your toes, then ur feet, calves, thighs, butt, then your stomach, hands, etc etc, until you're drowsy and fall asleep.
Also, try different kinds of music. I can't fall asleep without having my radio and/or fan on. If someone comes in my room and turns them off, I automatically wake up. It's just instinct.
Good luck!

If you're having problems b/c your brain just won't shut up, it's helpful to have some light background noise in your bedroom. I have a little tabletop water fountain that works really well, but I've heard that white noise machines and stuff like that can be helpful. You might want to try having a lavender scent in your room.....they make lavender plug in thingies that you can buy at Walgreens or wherever. I read something once about studies that were done that said people who had lavender scents in the room while they were sleeping slept more deeply than those without them. Then there's always the old standby.....a glass of warm milk!
