I love cooking and I also love to make special presentations with the food I cook. Lately I have been watching a local show which features recipes which can be cooked in ten (10) minutes or less. I love it and their recipes proved to be helpful. Now I can prepare our food fast. Can you cook fast? What food do you usually cook in just less that 10 minutes?

You're absolutely corect in saying that it's actually the preapration that gives us the problem when cooking. Sometimes the prepration time is longer than the actual cooking time. Preparing the ingredients and cleaning the fish or pork is more tedious the the actual cooking.

Well, i am not a very good cook... and it seems to take me forever everytime i cook because i tend to be very slow in cutting and chopping the main ingredients... aside for that... i do not have a great kitchen... so that make cooking more hard for me... But maybe if i practice more... and if i buy knives that are sharper... then i think i will be able to cook a lot faster...

I think i need sharp knives... the ones i have at home are not sharp enough... so that is one factor why it is taking me a long time to cut the veggies...

With regard to your knives, I have bought recently 3 very sharp knives at a vietnamese store which they sold for only P25 each. It's a lot of help in cutting the meat and it helps reduce my preparation time.

As some one pointed out most of the preparation, cleaning, washing and slicing is done beforehand in those shows where dinner is prepared in 10 minutes. There are however dishes that you can do in 10 minutes. For instance a stir fry with beef. Buy the beef that is already cut into strips. Stir fry the strips for 2 minutes, set aside on a plate. Chop up vegetables such as broccoli. carrots, celery, mushrooms an onion. Stir fry until crispy tender. Add the beef and favourite sauce, stir up to heat through, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds, walnut or pecan pieces. Ready to serve in 10 minutes. Another favourite of mine is Western sandwiches. Cut up some ham and the white part of green onions, heat up a little olive oil in frying pan, fry ham and onions until onions are glassy. Scrample an egg with a spoonful of milk. Pour over ham- onion mixture. Toast two slices of bread, lift out ham onion egg omlette, put between slices of bread, eat with ketchup and dill pickles. Mushroom Omlette is another quick dish. Serve with a mixed green salad and a wholegrain bun.

Well for me, just the really simple things like: half boiled eggs, omelets, bacon, scrambled eggs, poached eggs, well a lot of eggs. Also, just frying frozen food like nuggets, french fries, hash browns.. :) I can make a quick sandwich in 10 minutes as well, and not to mention whip up a salad too.. :) Oh, I can make instant noodles in 5 minutes.. :) lol...

I think I am able to cook in ten minutes. However in ten minutes time usually I only prepare simple dish. Whenever I want to prepare a dish early in the morning, I would prepare the ingredients first at night. So in the morning I would just do the cooking and my husband can eat a freshly home-made cooking which is steaming hot and delicious. For example if I want to prepare fried spaghetti I would boil the spaghetti at night and keep it in a closed container and put it in the fridge. I will cut in advance the chicken meat in little pieces. I will prepare the onions, ginger and garlic by pounding them with the blender and then keep it in the fridge. The same goes with the vegetables which I will put into the spaghetti, all of them are washed and cut in advance. In the morning I only have to heat the pan with a little oil, sautee the onion, garlic and ginger. Then I put in the chicken meat and let it cook for 5 minutes. After that I put the sauce, salt and flavor. Then I put the vegetables together with the spaghetti. The stirring only takes about 2 minutes and now it is ready to be served.

I can see that you are very organized. Good for you and I admire you for that. I got a better idea from you in preparing the ingredients in advance. Thanks.

I think I can cook pasta in 10 minutes. Of course, the pasta sauce has to be those ready made pasta sauce. Steam eggs are pretty easy too. It also depends on how big is the kitchen. However, I don't really like to rush things. If I really have only 10 minutes to prepare, I will just eat yogurt or bread or biscuits.

I don't cook at all, though I don't dislike cooking. Recently I have ordered an induction cooker from a friend and it will arrive in few days. This equipment cooks many items very fast in about 5 to 10 minutes. Thanks for this nice discussion!

This is the first time that I heard about induction cooker. What is it? Is it the same as microwave oven or oven toaster? It's intriguing and I think that's nice if I can have it. Thanks for the info.

dorisday1971, I do not know if you notice and had been observant enough, but a lot of things have been prepared beforehand in a cook show. So, just like them cooking up a meal to me is done barely within 10 minutes, however, that will also depend on what you are cooking as well. Let's face it a soup in ten minutes is simply not possible and even then I am just wondering how that pot of soup will actually taste like. Anyway, just to let you in a bit, cooking is all in the preparation and state of mind. Starting with the selection of meat, greens, seasonings, then the cuttings and the order of cooking them. So, the more you prepare and be prepared, the better your dishes will turn out. Take it from me. Have a nice day at the kitchen.

There's no better taste than cooking it with a bit of "hearty" feel in it. You're right, if you really cook it special, then you really have to prepare for it. I guess, you're a good cook.
