I have this question in my teaching: how to complain in English. I racked my brains so hard only with some odd sentences. Suppose you complain to the manager of a restaurant when you find the fish you ordered taste so terrible. This is my writing. (my students have a very limited vocabulay, say, 2500 words.)Could you help me polish it? thank you. Dear Sir, I am Peter of .... I am writing to tell you what I feel after dinner in your restaurant. The fish I ordered tasted so terrible that it almost made me throw out. Clearly, it must have gone bad long ago.To be honest, I can't imagine the restaurant I once trusted so much can serve its frequent customers in this way. It is unbelievable for you to make money at the cost of the customers' health. In fact, your behaviour not only ruin your image, but also hurt our customers' heart. Worse still, it is illegal to sell the bad food in the restaurant. If you don't stop, your restaurant will be closed in time. Looking forward to your reply. yours, Peter

Your best bet would be to complain while at the restaurant preferably during the meal but at any point after that as well. Requesting a manager and explaining what happened and when and then letting them know that you will be happy to report them if this type of service is continued. However if you were to write a letter something like the following would be what I would write. Dear Sir/Madam On the (example 23rd) of February around 6pm I came into your restaurant and ordered (name the meal i.e fish dinner). Upon receiving my meal I found the fish to be quite rancid, it tasted and smelled as if it were outdated and made me quite ill. As a long time patron of your establishment I am most disappointed that this could have occurred and that this was allowed to be served to a customer. My health is something I take seriously and I hope in the future I am not put again into the position to feel that my health and that of your other patrons are being so carelessly overlooked and mishandled. Out of courtesy I would appreciate a response acknowledging that you have received this letter and a response as to what you plan to do to rectify this from happening again. If I do not receive a response I will be left to assume that you are not doing anything to rectify it and will have to log my complaint with the health board. Sincerely, (Your name here)

I appreciate your help very much. In fact, in China, we also just do like what Americans do, asking the waiter to change the dish. Of course, the waiter will argue till we are bored.

Very nice letter and a great use of vocabulary. 3/3!! I agree. Talk directly with the manager to settle this one. Show the evidence.

First off, most americans do not write a letter of complaint. I speak english and I am an american. If I go into a resturant that I receive bad food. I tell the waited, "I would like to talk to the manager." Then, when the manager shows up and only then. I will complain. I say sir would you like to taste this food? If he says why then you proceed to tell him that you use to come here to enjoy a very good meal and told many many of your friends about it and that now they come here to have a good meal too. You then tell him after this meal, I will now have a reason to tell many many of my friends that you now serve very bad a sickly food. Unless, you can fix this right now!!! At, that point the manger usually says we will fix this right away and bring you new and great food on the house!!!

I see. Today in class my students asked me the question what Americans will do if they find themselves treated wrongly. From the TV series Friends, I know they will point out the queston directly, and if possible, politely such as to their boss. thank you for your reminding. The question is I have to teach them to write this letter of complaint according to the requirement. I have no choice. hope you can understand me.

Well, if it has to be a letter then I would make it a library project. Let them go to the library to check out a book on letters and writing. Plus, the librarian can help you with the right books. Then, they can check one out, work on a paper and then read them in class and learn from each others. And, go to the Library as a class group it is more fun to work together. Good Luck!

Here in the Philippines, a written complaint to a certain establishment or on any situation comes after a verbal or oral complaint. Verbal complaint may be made just after tasting the food served and unsatisfied with it by calling the waiter. If said waiter will not act on your claim, then, that will be the time to consider talking to the supervisor or manager of the restaurant. You see, the situation you illustrated needs an urgent resolution or action from the management. Usually, the management will suggest to change the food. A written complaint would only be made if the manager requests for a written complaint for record purposes or if you are just shy to complain personally. If that is the case, here is a sample or a draft of a written complaint. -Date- The Manager -Name of the Restaurant- -Address- Letter of Complaint Dear Sir/Madam, Greetings! The undersigned is a patron customer of your restaurant and I continued to be such until a disappointing incident happened. That on ______________(date) at around ________ (time), the undersigned dined in to your restaurant and ordered ___________ (be particular and specific with what you ordered). To my dismay, the ________ (name of the fish) does not tastes good, which almost made me throw up and ill. I assumed said dish was already spoiled and still served it. Contrary to my high expectations with your good service, I would like to inform you of my disappointment. Hence, as the manager of ________ (name of the restaurant), it is your responsibility to take immediate action on this matter. Thank you. yours truly, Peter ___________ (surname) Note: If you have monetary claims for the damage made to you, then you may include it. Third paragraph....after matter.... In addition thereof, I would like to request for medical assistance, which costs me _______________________ (amount). Though, the monetary claim is no longer necessary. There's no need also to place or indicate "In fact, your behaviour not only ruin your image, but also hurt our customers' heart. Worse still, it is illegal to sell the bad food in the restaurant. If you don't stop, your restaurant will be closed in time.? It is already complete that the manager must take an action about the incident. Since you are only complaining. The manager would already understand what you want to imply. Simple yet complete.

Actually, here in the US we don't usually write to the place we just call the waiter/waitress over and tell them the problem. Most times they will bring a new dish, sometimes they won't charge you and if they do nothing, you talk to the management, if they still do nothing you walk out. Most restaurants know that customers are what make their businesses succeed so they try to keep the customers happy. If you go back to the restaurant in the future, I'd make sure to mention to the waiter/waitress that the last time you were in you were very unhappy with the fish and you hope they've fixed the problem. Hello here is my reply for this letter. I have to say you are getting better. == Dear Sir, I am Peter of .... I am writing to tell you what I feel after having dinner in your restaurant. The fish I ordered tasted so terrible that it almost made me throw up. Clearly, it must have gone bad long ago. Honestly, I can't imagine the restaurant I once trusted so much can serve its loyal customers this way. It is unbelievable for you to make money at the cost of the customers' health. In fact, your service dos not only ruin your image, but also hurt your customers' heart. Worse still, it is illegal to sell the spoiled food in restaurants. Please address this concern because sooner or later this kind of complaints might lead to the shutting down of your restaurant. Looking forward to your reply. Respectfully yours, Peter

Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing this letter to express my feelings for your restaurant. The fish dinner I ordered on(give day and time here) tasted so terrible that it almost made me ill. Clearly, it must have been spoiled and should have been thrown out some time ago. I can't imagine that a restaurant that I once trusted could serve food this way. It is terrible that you are willing to risk the health of your customers for the sake money. Serving spoiled food is illegal. I would like a response to this letter. If I do not receive a response in one weeks time, I will be given no choice but to take further action. Very Unsatisfied, Peter....
