Cable Vs. Satellite

Many people use cable or satellite to receive TV signals rather than the old style rabbit ears. Both can carry hundreds of TV stations as well as dedicated music channels.
*
Both satellite and cable TV services come with drawbacks. Satellite is generally cheaper but requires sunny days and line of sight to the orbiting transmitter in order to receive signals. It is recommended for sunny climates. You also can face disruption in service and high costs for broken equipment.
*
Cable television charges through the nose for it's service. Yet sunny climate and line of sight aren't issues. Cable companies will also fix leased equipment or replace it at a local office, cutting down loss of service.
*
What is your favorite service?

You can if you live where I live. My landlord splits the cable signal eight ways. I do use cable though because I've got line of sight issues.

I too prefer recorded movies although I use the Netflix service. I only rent the DVD's because the streams Netflix has gives my PC the fits.

I have had cable since 1981. I have been happy with it. Every time the rate goes up, we get either a better picture or another basic channel or channels. I have digital cable now and I am soo happy I don;t have to worry about the big change in February.

Where I live in Ireland isn't wired for cable, and it's unlikely to be happening anytime soon! Only Cities here have the option of getting cable service, and I'm too far out in the sticks for that. So,I decided to go with Satellite...The Satellite service available in this area had a "Pay once,Watch forever" Deal a Year ago at Christmas (it's still available today..) You picked up an installation pack in an electrical store, phoned the company and gave them the enclosed installation access code, and that covered you to have a dish installed with a set top box,and a 3 month subscription to paid channel viewing...I could have cancelled at that point leaving me without paid channels and having only basic freeview service, but I was hooked by then and opted to pay per month ..then in mid april,it started blanking out with "No satellite signal is being received" errors on screen..I figured it might have something to do with the trees near my house which were Bare in December, and in April had their full foliage on,and maybe blocking the signal..I put off calling about the problem (at first!)as I didn't want to have to pay for an engineer callout to tell me what I'd figured out for myself! So,when It didn't improve, and I did call them to find out what could be done, they basically said "Suck it up" as I was then under contract after the 3 month "trial" ended,so I got a little more than 4 months service by April and was locked in for a Year with no picture through summer..They did send out an engineer (under warranty,as it turned out..) who looked at my installation and said "We can't do anything for you but take it down again!" The leaves falling saw the signal returning,so I had service again from september or so,but I said no way I'm going through this again,so this Year when the picture started to go I called and cancelled my subscription..and with our upcoming digital TV switchover, that'll leave me with a terrestrial TV digibox for service..the Moral..Make sure there's NO trees in your line of sight of the satellite before you get a dish installed!

I prefer satellite over cable for the reason you mentioned, cable costs way too much and raises rates way too often. I don't know what satellite company you are talking about with the description above. I have DirecTV. They work more often than not, rain or shine. If the storm is heavy, or there is a lot of wind, it goes out for a few minutes, but then its right back on.
Cable here is different. They are affected by the weather way more than satellite. When there is a storm, or even a slightly heavy rain they go out. And they stay out for longer than satellite, like for 10-20 minutes.

You're lucky because locally people complain about DrecTV. You may be living directly under the satellite.

Yeah, you didn't see that feature? I pay an extra million dollars a month so the satellite will hover directly over my house lmao!

cable comes from sattelite right? so why choose between cable and sattellite..sattelite is the best connection for me..why? because it could bring signal..it could carry out signal around the globe like internet connection and mind you my dear friends cable can be seen and can be watched over internet also according to my IT teacher.

With satalite your responsible for the tiny satalite dish at your home. Repair of the satalite dish can be a pain as you have to contact the repair people very long distance and mail your equipment a long way away (and deal with out TV).
*
With cable, they have large dishes at the cable company, with cables reaching to the apartments and houses. If you have clouds or trees around you, the cable doesn't interfere as much with your reception if you have a reasonable company. Usually, repairs are a local affair.

I haven't tried satellite here so I would go for Cable service. So far our service is good from our provider. And it is cheap as well. So, so far so good for me. I will vote for cable service.
Happy Mylotting! Cheers!

I too use cable because I am so broke I wouldn't be able to replace a sat box if it busted. The same goes for Internet, as I lease both the box and cable modem.

My parents have had both cable and satellite in at one time and they both seem to be good, when we lived in our old trailer we had to get cable because they did not offer satellite where we lived, and cable was good,it had pretty good quality and some good channels to watch, and then when we moved to our double wide about eight years ago we got satellite which I like a whole lot better,it has really good quality, and a whole lot of channels to choose from, when it comes to finding something to watch, even though there are so many commercials these days, and so little to watch, that sometimes it is not even worth turning the television on.

It definitely has to be cable tv for me! I live in one of these new complexes and you are not allowed to have those satellite dishes on the outside of the building. The majority of people have cable where I am. I'm pleased with the current service that I'm getting. I have over a hundred channels and I'm forever changing the channel, there's always something to watch. My cable service is actually quite cheap and I think I will always remain with cable! Andrew

Some cable companies are better than others. Sounds to me like your cable company didn't put the line in properly.

That is a draw back with sat, especially if you live in a wet climate. However, some cable companies, such as one of the poster's, can be pretty crappy too. Wet climate cables need to be installed carefully.
